🦍🎂 Big birthday wishes for Como’s biggest gorilla! Schroeder turns 41 today!

With an impressive silverback presence and a wonderfully laid-back personality, Schroeder has been winning hearts at Como since 1991. Born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, he arrived as part of a bachelor group before becoming the silverback of Como’s first gorilla family group.

Over the years, he’s been a devoted father, a watchful leader, and a favorite of generations of visitors. His gentle nature is a reminder that being big and powerful can come with a soft side. 💚

And that serious expression? Don’t mistake it for a bad mood! A relaxed gorilla can look like he’s frowning.

Join us in wishing our gentle giant a very happy 41st birthday! 🎉

“He was everyone’s giraffe.” 💚

With heavy hearts, we share that Skeeter the giraffe was humanely euthanized following a decline in his health related to arthritis. Our veterinary and animal care teams had been monitoring him for months. As moving and lying down to rest became increasingly difficult, and despite continued treatment, they determined that saying goodbye was the most compassionate decision to prevent further suffering.

For 16 years, Skeeter helped make Como special. He inspired children, helped zookeepers learn, fathered eight calves, and was even part of surprise marriage proposals and a wedding. He was gentle, stubborn, mischievous, and unforgettable.

In his final days, Skeeter was showered with favorite snacks, extra attention, and love.

“Thank you for trusting me, us, with your care,” shared Senior Zookeeper Jill Erzar. “Thank you for being so gentle to every kiddo you’ve met. Thank you for the inspiration to do more for your species.”

Our hearts are with his care team and everyone who loved him. If Skeeter was part of a special Como memory, we invite you to share it in the comments.

Two babies. Twice the adorable. 🤎🤎

Meet Como’s newest nyala calves! Hubert was born October 3 to mom Stevie, and a little girl arrived October 23 to first-time mom Meadow. Ollie is the dad of both!

Hubert’s name was chosen by guests at Como Friends’ Como After Hours event from three keepers’ grandfathers’ names. Our amazing volunteers will have the honor of naming Meadow’s calf on November 5!

Stevie and Hubert now have access to their indoor habitat, so you may catch a glimpse during your visit. Meadow and her little girl are still bonding behind the scenes.

Spotted coats, snowshoe paws and a tail that doubles as a blanket. Snow leopards are built for mountain life!

Today is International Snow Leopard Day, and we’re celebrating Como’s Alya and her daughter, Willow. Their wild relatives navigate steep, rocky slopes with help from long tails for balance, wide paws for traction and thick fur to keep warm. Their camouflage has earned them the nickname “ghosts of the mountains.”

But even these mountain specialists face challenges. Habitat loss, poaching and fewer wild prey threaten their future. Protecting snow leopards helps protect the mountain habitats that many other species depend on, too. 💙

🎃 Hey, gourd-gous! 🎃

Bumpy, smooth, tall, squat… our Exhibit Gallery is showing off pumpkins and gourds with plenty of personality! Come explore the different varieties, check out their silly (real!) names, and pick your favorite. Who knew a bunch of gourds could steal the show? 🍂
