Since 1963 the Foundation has rescued unwanted, neglected, and abandoned dogs & cats in Kankakee County

While our staff works 7 days a week, we are open to the public on Saturday afternoons from 12 to 3 and by appointment Tuesday through Saturday. If you are looking to drop off a donation we are open to the public Saturday between 12 and 3 or you can leave the donation by the front door between 7 and 5 any day of the week. Sunday- Closed

Come out to Sunrise Center Animal Rescue today from 12pm -3pm and meet our cats or kittens like littermates Abby and Jonah.

These kittens are incredibly cute, raised in a foster home so are litter box trained, and adaptable to about any home.

Very curious and out going!

Come meet these two. Abby is the black and white and Jonah is the grey and white. Both females. Spays, vaccines, microchips are all included in their adoption fee.

Yuki is an 8 year old, female husky who found herself looking for a new home through no fault of her own. She has been loved her entire life, and now she’s simply hoping for someone who will love her for all the years still ahead of her.

Yuki is currently enjoying life in a foster home while she waits to meet her forever family and her foster family has nothing but wonderful things to say about this beautiful girl. 🥹

Meet Rudy! 🐾❤️

Rudy is a 2-year-old neutered Schnauzer mix who found himself in our care after his owner had to move into assisted living.

Rudy is currently living in a foster home, and he recently started training classes and WOW, is this boy receptive to learning! We were honestly a little surprised by just how much Rudy loves training, but we are thrilled to have found something he really enjoys.

And then there’s Rudy’s other great love… the air purifier. That’s right. Rudy’s favorite place in the whole house is laying next to the air purifier. So naturally, we feel an air purifier should be a REQUIREMENT for his future adopter. 🤣

Rudy does have a few opinions he’d like you to know about. First, he is NOT a fan of being picked up and carried around. He would much rather keep all four paws firmly on the ground, thank you very much.

He also isn’t a fan of men or cats, so his ideal home will be a cat-free home with people he feels comfortable around. Rudy is dog friendly, although he can be a little selective about who he considers a friend. 🐶

Rudy is such a fun, quirky, smart little guy, and we know there is a family out there who is going to appreciate every bit of his personality.

Saturdays are our favorite, there are so many opportunities to meet us today without an appointment!

Stop by Kankakee Farmers' Market from 8a-12p and meet a handful of wonderful dogs like Sully! Sully has been in a foster since our construction and is 15/10 a good dog. House manners,knows some basic obedience, dog, cat and kid friendly!

We will continue on our day at the shelter on RT 1 for open hours from 12p-330p!

📣 Adoption Announcement 📣

Some adoption stories just hit a little differently. 💙

When Slater, the young blue heeler, first came to KCHF, he had severely broken leg - we weren't sure if it was repairable or if it had to be amputated. He was in pain and needed more than just a safe place to land. Luckily our vet partners at VOC saw that his leg could be repaired. He needed surgery to repair his leg with a pin and rod and then some time, and someone willing to help him heal.

Slater spent his time at KCHF in a wonderful foster home, where he could rest, recover, and be reminded every day that he was safe and loved. He made an incredible recovery, and when the time came for him to find his forever family, he didn’t have to wait long.

We are so happy to announce that Slater, now Doc, has been adopted by the Pourroy family! And we couldn’t have picked a better ending for this sweet boy. Doc now has a wonderful home and even some fellow blue heelers to call his family.

From a broken leg and an uncertain beginning to a forever home surrounded by love… we couldn’t be happier for you, Doc. 🐾

Congratulations Doc and the Pourroys! We can’t wait to see all the adventures ahead. 💙

Stop by to Meet Lad, Godiva and Lancelot today at Sunrise Center Animal Rescue from 4p-7p!

We have so many wonderful kittens in our care and these 3 are just as adorable and sweet. They definitely are a little shy in the shelter setting but we have no doubt they will excel in a home setting.

Kittens always do better with a buddy, we require two or more kittens to be adopted together if no other felines reside in the home.

So many dogs went to foster this week while we worked on some projects at the shelter! We cannot thank all of these families for opening their homes enough. ❤️

Every single dog has received a wonderful report card! Everything from friendly with other pets and people down to exquisite house manners! No matter what you’re looking for, we have a dog for you!

Many shelter dogs are used to home living, we are just a middle part of their journey. Apply to adopt a dog in our care and breeze though some of the sneak peeks of all the dogs that enjoyed their breaks this week in a real home!

📣Adoption Announcement 📣

Geno is off to South Dakota with his new family after being our longest resident who got a home during Clear the Shelters in August!

Little Geno on the left moved over from Kankakee County Animal Control in Sept of 2025 as just a young pup. He patiently waited with us for a very long time, for no other reason than being a black pittie mix in the shelter system. We took him on several events without interest and ultimately he headed off to a foster home to catch up on what house living was all about.

Now older Geno on the right has became a grown up gentleman and thanks to his foster family he has learned how to be a great house dog. We love foster homes for our dogs and we are thrilled to know Geno is off to live with family of his fosters all the way in South Dakota. We are excited to be able to hear how he is doing after being overlooked with us for over a year.

Our long term dogs who find their people are always bittersweet but absolute Best wishes sweet boy, enjoy your new life in another state!

Jon is a 7 month old wire hair male pup who found himself without a place to call home before ending up at our shelter. He is guaranteed to make you smile and is currently roughly about 30lbs. He is the perfect age to fit into any family with dogs, cats and children with continued love and guidance.
