🐾 Understanding “No-Kill” in Municipal Shelters 🐾
We know the term “no-kill” can sometimes cause confusion, especially when it comes to municipal animal shelters. We want to help explain what it really means and why it can look different for city-operated facilities like Balch Springs Animal Services.
A “no-kill” shelter generally means saving at least 90% of the animals that enter the shelter. It does not mean that euthanasia never happens. Most municipal shelters are legally required to accept every animal that comes through their doors — including injured, dangerous, suffering, aggressive, or medically/mentally compromised animals.
Unlike private rescues that can limit intake, municipal shelters cannot turn animals away. Our staff works hard every day to find positive outcomes through:
🐶 Adoption
🐱 Rescue partnerships
🏡 Fostering
❤️ Reunification with owners
Euthanasia is only considered in situations involving severe medical suffering, public safety concerns, or when every humane option has been exhausted.
Our goal will always be to save as many lives as possible while protecting both animals and our community. The best way to support lifesaving efforts is by adopting, fostering, volunteering, donating, and ensuring pets are spayed/neutered and properly identified.
Thank you for continuing to support the animals in our care and helping us create better outcomes together. 🐾
