Pipe Dream Percherons

Pipe Dream Percherons Breeding and raising Percheron draft horses. Specializing in preserving Roan and Bay Percherons as well as horses similar to the 1930s in type. PDP Founded 2005.

All horses are on a regular 2/3 month rotational worming program between Ivermectin Gold, Pyrantel Pamoate, Anthelcide EQ Oxibendazole. All horses are vaccinated annually for Eastern/Western/Tetanus Rhino/Flu and WNV. Foals are halter broke to lead, tie, and be handled. I try to get them some trailer time if I can before leaving to a new home. I do stress however manners is highly important and ta

ught from the beginning. All paperwork is 100% in order on all of my horses. Some horses also have equine color genetic testing. Any horse sold from PDP will be sold with a negative coggins and interstate health papers. Paperwork will be in order. International health papers, vet checks, xrays ect. are the responsibility of the buyer.

Indi was the very first Percheron foal I bred and foaled out in 2006. I kept her for 15 years. Temperament, best even keeled mare I ever owned. Her sire was blue roan, but she was just black. First foal, I was so hopeful. I bred her to Maple Grove's Gamblers Ace 3 times. Decided I wanted something a little different. I was hoping to tweak the conformation I seen in each foal. So her final foal for me, she was bred to his son, Pipe Dream's Justabay Hector. Sylvi was born in 2020. She's like owning her mother all over again. She's a heck of a great mare. Mick was her first foal. Sylvi is actually a paternal half sister to Luce. Actually, Sylvi and Luce are 3/4ths related. Their dams are maternal half sisters. Indi was broke to ride at 17 and lives a very active life. She gets lessons. Does all sorts of things now. Dressage clinics. Working equitation. 20 years old. Looks and feels great. She's loved, just as much as if she were home here. Sylvi fills the space she left.

Lotus PDP, known around here as Lola is one of my youngest producing mares, and my last offspring of Ace that I kept. Like most of her siblings that I retained, Lola is not Roan. While I hold the majority of Ace's living offspring, I have the least Roans. I liked the horse, and I liked what he produced, so if they came out with color then great, and if not, oh well.

Laurel is a double Maple Grove's Gamblers Ace granddaughter.

Laurel is Bay Roan, but we already know she's also 1 copy Grey. So far her Grey behavior seems to be slow like her dam, and not fast greying like her granddam. We should get to enjoy her seasonal color changes for at least a few years. Laurel is being retained to carry on the lineage of her granddam, Lorelei PDP. She should mature in that 17.1hh-17.2hh range. She looks just her mother. Copy paste. She should mature into a heck of a mare. I'll post her dam in another post.

As of right now, I'm hanging onto Wesson in case he needs to replace Uncle Hector. This keeps me connected to Roan in the Percheron breed, which some may not know, but I only own 1 mature Roan horse. I sold the sire on these foals. I sold him because even though he was Roan, he was a full brother to Hector, and Hector was coming home this year. I did not need full brothers and his new home was an excellent opportunity for him to thrive. This year was his second foal crop. I have to say, hands down, some of the nicest and most consistent quality foals back to back.

For new folks wondering, Mick is Bay Roan. Yes, Bay Roan is still extremely rare in Percherons. Mick makes #6. Bay Roan is no longer found in any other country that the Percheron breed exists but the United States. While there were likely not 1,000s of them, there were much much more Bay Roan Percherons than today coming over seas from France while the breed was being imported in the mid 1800s through 1930s.

Mick's sire, Hunter is 1 of the 3 original Bay Roans born here in 2020', prompting an article to be written and a little bit of fanfare. The last Bay Roan was born 43 years earlier. Prior to that it was believed that our last Bay Roans were roughly 50 years earlier. No one was intentionally breeding or keeping the Bay Roan Percheron and they became a myth like a white whale. Without being in the eye of the public, a lot of mis information has been spread, spoken and grown into what so many believe the Percheron truly is. People who are uneducated about Percheron facts and history think that the Percheron can only be Black and Grey. The United States and Canada are the only two countries that choose to continue to allow the Percheron to be Registered, bred, and raised in all of the original color options that were present at importation of the breed into our respective countries.

Black, Grey, Bay, Brown, Chestnut, Blue Roan, Bay Roan, Red Roan.

Mick is still looking for his next new owner and we do require that Mick is to be a gelding. He is sweet as pie and just as deserving of a loving home as any other foal. Should make 17hh and be a pretty big chunky boy.

I choose to feed Tribute Kalm Ultra. I either add in Cocosoya, or else now I'm adding Flaxseed Oil. I keep all my mares on this extra to keep them in good shape as extra calories are going out growing a foal internally, then later feeding that growing foal through milk production. Most of my mares are very giving in their milk production, rightly so, as these foals are growing fast and hard to become big horses. It is a bit different than owning light horse breeds. I do not prevent my foals from eating with their dams, and even the foals can benefit from a few mouthful a day.

Our Part 2 of 'How To Select Percherons' from 1936. Luce remains our original study of comparison to text. The full piece is a mini book, so I've pulled parts in what we like to see.

Reminder that Luce stands 17.1hh. Luce descends from horses who were both much bigger, and many horses who were smaller than him. Luce typically runs 89" in heartgirth in mid summer. I do not keep him confined in a small area. He runs the fenceline quite a bit when 'his mares' are out of his view. In slightly more pudged up condition, Luce is in the 92-93" heartgirth range. He has never trended towards gross obesity. He has 11.5" cannons, which is the most of any Percheron I own. He is very ample in width of heel, hoof depth, and hoof wall thickness. He's a lot of horse and while he may come across small and hard to judge size through photos, I'll show you him next to a grown 5'10" man to give you perspective.

Considering Luce is not 100% sound, yes, his front right, he's still a very nice stallion. I feel he shows a lot of the characteristics that made the Percheron such a popular draft horse in this country. I do love how the piece is very much for bone in the breed, but as I try to follow, we like to stay away from I overly fleshy joints and I do not favor straight pasterns. People like to go too far to one end of the spectrum if allowed.
