Not every large animal patient is large.

The Mallard Pediatric Bellows Assembly (PBA) mounts on the 2800C ventilator and gives you a smaller bellows, graduated from 200 to 2,200 mL. That means precise, easy-to-read ventilation for foals, calves, and smaller patients. It’s ideal for zoos and mixed practices that see every size in a single week.

Look at the size of that breathing circuit. Large animal anesthesia moves liters of gas with every breath, and someone has to manage every one of them.

In equine surgery, the anesthetist at the head of the table keeps the patient stable while the surgical team works. A horse lying on its back also has the weight of its abdominal organs pressing against its lungs, which is a big reason ventilators are so important in these cases.

Your ventilator's bellows is a monitor. Here's how to read it:

Rises all the way up, every breath = circuit is holding volume

Stops a little lower each breath = leak (check cuff, connections, canister)

Collapses and stays down = treat it as a disconnect

Ascending bellows make problems visible immediately, which is why they're the safer design.

This operating room is 5,000 miles from our shop. The machine in it? Built by us.

Our friends and partners at in Warsaw, Poland shared this photo from a recent equine surgery — that's a Mallard 2800C keeping the patient breathing steady in the background.

People are sometimes surprised to hear Mallard equipment is working far beyond the U.S. But veterinary teams around the world face the same challenge we build for every day: safely anesthetizing and ventilating patients, whether it's a 2 kg cat or a 500 kg horse.

A 1,200-pound patient can't tell you it's struggling to breathe. 🐴

Once a horse is under anesthesia and recumbent, its own body weight compresses the lungs — making proper ventilation one of the biggest challenges in equine surgery.

This Mallard 2800C is 25 years old. It's still doing surgeries.

The video below comes from Crossroads Veterinary Clinic in Anderson, California, where this 2800C has been part of the surgical suite for a quarter century — and it's still on the job.

Behind it is Dr. Kelly Shaw, a surgeon whose training spans two continents: veterinary school at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, internships in equine surgery and medicine at North Carolina State University and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and a large animal surgical residency at UW–Madison.

When someone with that résumé is running cases on a machine we built in the last century, it means the thing we care about most — building equipment that outlasts trends, budgets, and even careers — is working.

We don't design machines to be replaced. We design them to keep showing up, case after case, year after year.

The year was 1997. Our patient was a 400-pound lioness.

The San Diego Wild Animal Park had just bought a Mallard Model 2800B and invited our founder Bob Pearson down to in-service the ventilator — on a live lion.

They darted her, carried her in, and Bob intubated her (a skill he first learned as a Navy Medical Corpsman). The team ran a full physical, dental work, and claw care while the 2800B held her steady.

When it was over, they moved her to a recovery cage. Minutes later she roared so loudly it scared the daylights out of Bob. The staff just smiled — "She's recovering nicely."

Nearly 30 years later, the Model 2800C still does this work in zoos and aquariums worldwide.

Every life-saving machine we ship starts at a workbench — and at one of ours, you'll find Dan Reed.

Dan is a Master Machinist and one of the quiet backbones of Mallard Medical. The kind of craftsman who measures twice, cuts once, and somehow makes precision look easy. The parts he shapes end up inside anesthesia machines and ventilators caring for everything from house cats to thousand-pound horses.

This week, with the 4th of July around the corner, it feels like the right time to say it out loud: Mallard equipment is built here, by hand, by people like Dan. American craftsmanship isn't a slogan for us — it's a guy at a machine, getting every thousandth of an inch right because a patient on the other end is counting on it.

So before the long weekend kicks off, thank you, Dan. And thank you to every maker out there who takes pride in building things that matter. 🇺🇸
