With the warmer weather, snakes are becoming more active! Virginia is home to three venomous snakes: copperheads, timber rattlesnakes, and cottonmouths. Can you guess which one of these are the most common culprit among pet bites? If you guessed the copperhead, you are correct! As scary as a snake bite may be - your team here at BRVA has you covered! If you think your pet may have been bitten, try to keep them as calm and quiet as possible and give us a call right away. The sooner treatment is started, the better!
Keep an eye out for these symptoms -

• Sudden swelling, often around the face, muzzle, or a leg
• Pain or sensitivity when touched
• Bruising around the bite area
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting
• Excessive drooling
• Difficulty breathing in more severe cases

Here is Dr. Thompson with ‘Girly’, our most recent copperhead survivor. When she arrived, the venom had affected her ability to clot blood, making this a very serious situation! After treatment with antivenom, iv fluids, pain meds, and close monitoring, she made a great recovery and is now heading home to her family! Cases like these are a great reminder of how important it is to seek veterinary care as soon as possible, if you suspect a snake bite.
