Rat Way Sanctuary Rat Sanctuary based in Portland, OR

Giant neb chamber. All piled in the corner.

Three of our sanctuary boys, Tate, Rory, and Jimmy, plus two of our own rats, Buffy and Dougie Jones, get nebulized twice a day as part of their treatment for chronic respiratory disease.

The sanctuary is struggling with medical expenses. We had two big surgeries this week, an emergency visit, and a lot of maintenance care. We currently have a deficit of around $900. If you are able to help us out, please see below!

Uni is here in support of his brother, Ari, who is in surgery right now. His bladder herniated into his scrotal sack, and it needs to be put back and the hole closed up so his organs stay out going forward. The surgery will run us somewhere from $960 to $1164 if all goes as anticipated. We are crossing our fingers for him.

If you are able to help us cover his care, we appreciate it so much. It has been a struggle this year to keep up with our expenses, but the community has always come through in the end. We are so thankful for our supporters for allowing us to give our sanctuary residents the best care.

Welcome, May-Belle! We agreed to take in this beautiful lady a few months ago after her other rats passed. Last week, they said goodbye to her last friend, and she made her way to us on Sunday. She is two and a half and has a permanent head tilt from an ear infection that ruptured her right eardrum and she has some mobility issues, but she is a spunky senior who will hopefully integrate with Our senior/chronically ill group.

Upon arrival, we noted an odor and discharge from her previously infected ear, so at the direction of our vet,, she has resumed meds, and her ear is looking and smelling much better. Unfortunately, we noticed a firm mass in her abdomen on Wednesday evening, so today she has an emergency visit to get some rads to investigate. We're crossing our fingers for good news, or at least less bad news, for her.

Ari is also back at the clinic today for his hernia repair after an emergency surgery yesterday (not one of ours!) caused his procedure to be pushed back. Brian is recovering well after his neuter on Wednesday.

If you are able to help us cover some of these big expenses, we appreciate it so much. Your support means the world to us!

Ari is gracing you with his cute little face in the hope of raising funds for Brian's neuter (happening now!) and his own hernia repair tomorrow. Our medical fund finally shows a positive number, but it will be right back in the negative by tomorrow.

It's been a hard year for us, and we have struggled to fundraise enough to keep up with our expenses. We've been inundated by emergency after emergency, surgery after surgery, and we've had to be much more careful about our intakes than we have in previous years, because we just don't know if the money will be there. It's exhausting, physically and mentally.

Despite that, we continue to show up, and our supporters have come through time after time. We kindly ask that you keep showing up as you are able, so we can continue this hard, draining, but ultimately rewarding work for the animals.

Between today and tomorrow we need around $1500 to cover the two surgeries. If you are able to contribute, thank you! Info 👇

We've got a whole boatload (well, three carrier load) of rats at the vet today. Chowder and Seneca are there for wellness visits, and Olivia and Holly have post op rechecks.

We have managed to break into the positive numbers, but we still need donations to help cover today's visits plus some med refills, then Brian's neuter tomorrow and Ari's hernia repair on Thursday! If you are able to help us out, we appreciate it so much!

Seneca, our eyeless wonder 💚

She's among the group of rats going to the vet tomorrow. For her, it's just a routine wellness visit. Despite her lack of eyes and her broken leg as a baby, she has been an extremely healthy girl. She turns two this summer.

We have a big week, with Ari's hernia repair on Thursday! We are trying to get ahead so we don't end up right back in a deficit. So far we have $250 of his estimated $920-$1164 procedure. If you are able to help us cover Ari's expenses, and those of all the other sanctuary babies, please see below!

Olivia, our current longest-tenured sanctuary baby. She had two masses removed a few weeks ago, and she is doing great. She's been with the sanctuary since March of 2024 when she arrived with the end of her tail missing and another chunk degloved, and she's around 2 and a half years old now.

Livvy, plus Seneca, Chowder, and Holly, have appointments on Tuesday. My brain is cooked, but please imagine a very thoughtful, funny, and persuasive plea for donations here that makes you instantly reach for your wallet. Please and thank you. 💚
