It's surgery day for Tate!

He's been cooking up this little dumpling of a mass since June, and we thought it was very unlikely he'd be a good candidate for surgery due to his chronic respiratory disease. Then when the SDAV hit, we were positive. But by some miracle, his respiratory health is now about as good as it's been for a long time, and the mass is so superficial, our vet thinks we have a shot of removing it. It's really just in the nick of time, as the skin over the mass has started to ulcerate. We've been able to keep it clean and intact, but we knew without surgery we would need to say goodbye very soon. We're crossing all our fingers that everything goes smoothly today, and that our little Tater Cakes gets to enjoy the lump-free life from here on out.

Send Tate some kind words and wish him luck today! And if you have it to spare, consider donating toward the cost of his care. We appreciate every little bit, and it helps us continue to provide expert care to our sanctuary residents.

An older picture of Tate with baby Greta here to share a bit of good news - Tate, Uni, and Trillium are all cleared for surgery!

Tate has had a mass growing since June, but his respiratory symptoms have been significant enough that we did not believe surgery was an option, particularly after our run in with SDAV. But our vet reports that his lungs are actually sounding better, and because the mass is so superficial, she believes we have a decent shot at removing it. The plan is to avoid full anesthesia in favor of injectables, which will be safer, and the removal itself should be very quick.

Uni also was cleared for his mass removal. His will be quite a bit more complicated since it's deep, but we were happy to hear his lungs sound good despite persistent upper respiratory symptoms.

Finally, Trillium cleared for her spay. We will get all three scheduled in the coming weeks.

If you are able to help us cover their costs, we appreciate it!

It's another big vet day for the sanctuary! SEVEN rats have appointments today.

Tate has a recheck for his respiratory disease and mass, Casper is being checked out for his respiratory and heart issues, and Uni is still pretty sneezy and has also grown a fancy new lump 🫠

Hot Pocket has another abscess forming in her abdomen. Unfortunately the bacteria responsible was identified as actinomyces, which is a normal part of gut flora, but definitely should not be deep in her abdomen. Actinomyces infections can be very slow and difficult to treat, so we are crossing our fingers we can get ahead of this.

Mochi, like Casper, is also being seen for her respiratory and heart issues.

Madrone is having her eyes checked out, and finally, Trillium is in for her pre-spay evaluation.

We don't anticipate any surprises today (although I guess that's why it's called a surprise 😂), but seven exams still adds up. If you're able to help us cover these routine and very necessary costs, please see below! Every cent goes toward medical care for our sanctuary residents!

Newt had his first vet visit today! He's the most recent snaggletooth to join the sanctuary crew, likely born from the same mother as the other four maloccluded Seaside babies in our care. Newt's litter was born in Little Critter Crew's care at the end of June, and a couple weeks ago they discovered his teeth were starting to grow into his upper lip. We were able to take him (and one of his brothers) into our care so he can get those ✨premium✨ dental benefits that he will need throughout his life.

Also!! Our first PCR test came back negative for SDAV!! We will be submitting more samples in the next couple weeks until we are comfortable lifting our quarantine. We need approx $500 to cover the cost of testing, but it's such an important step to ensure the safety of our current and future residents.

Lumps!

Please kindly tell the boys to stop growing masses. Tate has had a lump growing since June, but due to his respiratory disease, he is not a candidate for surgery. It has steadily grown over the last couple months, and unfortunately it seems like it will ulcerate soon.

Uni has also grown a small lump. He has also been battling respiratory symptoms for the last few weeks and is still symptomatic, so he has some room to improve before we can consider surgery for him.

Both boys have appointments on Saturday.
