❤️🐾 DASHA UPDATE — WE HAVE 30 MORE DAYS TO FIND HER FOREVER HOME! 🐾❤️
After the incredible amount of attention, love, and shares Dasha has received over the past week because of her October 18th deadline, we finally have some good news!
I spoke with Dasha’s foster mom, Nicole, and she and her husband have generously agreed to give us a 30-day extension to find Dasha a forever home here in the Oregon/Washington area 🙏❤️
However, this will be our FINAL extension.
Right now, Nicole is making an enormous sacrifice to help Dasha. Because Dasha is struggling with other animals, Nicole has been staying in an RV on their property with her, completely separated from her own family and dogs.
As you can imagine, this is an incredibly difficult arrangement for Nicole and her family, and it’s simply not sustainable long-term. But she and her husband have agreed to give Dasha another 30 days because they believe in her and want her to have every possible opportunity to succeed.
I cannot express how grateful I am for their kindness and sacrifice. ❤️
And let me tell you something about Dasha… SHE IS AN ABSOLUTE DREAM!
Dasha is approximately 5 years old, 55 lbs, a beautiful Belgian Shepherd who is incredibly intelligent, affectionate, loyal, and eager to learn.
She’s fully house-trained, has wonderful house manners, working on her basic commands and absolutely LOVES having a job to do and is proving just how smart and capable she is.
She’s also incredibly loving and bonds deeply with her people. Once she trusts you, she will give you the sweetest hugs!
🐾 WHY DID DASHA DO SO WELL WITH OTHER DOGS IN MEXICO BUT NOT IN OREGON?
This is something many people have asked, and I want to explain what Dasha’s professional trainer believes may be happening.
Dasha spent five months living successfully with other dogs in her foster home in Mexico. She was comfortable, relaxed, and had absolutely no issues living alongside the smaller dogs and cats in her foster home.
But then her entire world changed.
She left her foster mom(Erika), her familiar canine companions, her home, and everything that made her feel safe. She experienced the stress of international travel, 3 flight cancellations, unfamiliar people, a new country, and an entirely different environment.
Her trainer believes Dasha has lost her sense of social security.
Dogs who have spent time surviving on the streets often develop important social relationships with other dogs. For Dasha, those familiar relationships and routines may have provided a sense of stability and safety.
Now, without that familiar support system, Dasha is feeling extremely insecure.
People have become her primary source of comfort and security, and right now, unfamiliar dogs may feel like a threat to that safety rather than a source of companionship. This appears to be especially difficult with larger dogs, which she had less experience living with in Mexico.
Dasha is also struggling with confinement anxiety, which makes it even more difficult to safely manage her around other animals.
This doesn’t mean Dasha is a bad dog. It doesn’t mean she will never be able to coexist with other dogs again.
It means she is overwhelmed, insecure, and needs more to rebuild her confidence.
The encouraging news is that her trainer believes continued training may eventually make it possible to safely work toward introducing Dasha to other dogs again.
She’s already working on muzzle training, which is an excellent safety tool for any dog, and Nicole is helping her build confidence through obedience and nose work.
But we’re not going to rush her or put anyone at risk.
For now, Dasha needs to be the ONLY PET in her home. No other dogs or cats.
THE HOME WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
🐾Oregon/Washington area
🐾 No other pets
🐾 Patient, understanding adopter
🐾 Experience with shepherds or anxious dogs preferred
🐾 Someone willing to continue her training
🐾 A stable home where she can decompress and feel secure and not be left home alone for hours
🐾 Someone who wants an incredibly intelligent, affectionate, and loyal companion
Dasha has already survived so much. She was poisoned on the streets of Mexico and tragically lost her puppy. She spent five months learning to trust again in foster care.
In 7 years of transporting more than 500 rescued dogs from Mexico to Oregon, Dasha would be the very first dog we’ve ever had to bring back to Mexico because we couldn’t find a suitable placement.
And we are trying SO HARD to prevent that from happening. 😭💔
But we also have to respect the sacrifices her foster family is making. We cannot ask Nicole to continue living separately from her family indefinitely.
We have 30 more days.
30 more days to find someone who sees what we see in Dasha.
An incredibly smart, loving, beautiful dog who just needs the right environment to feel safe again.
PLEASE, PLEASE KEEP SHARING DASHA! 🙏
Even if you can’t adopt, sharing her story might be what connects us with the one person who can give her the life she deserves.
Somewhere out there is someone who wants one extraordinary dog to love.
We just need to find them. ❤️🐾
