Nap time for the Excursion crew 😴

You can see behind beautiful Gertrude, we have the cars covered with aluminet shade cloths to reflect the sun (this really helps keep it cool!) Parking in the shade is even better, but that isn’t an option where we are today.

The doors of the cars are open with the windows down and each pup has a fan blowing into their Ruffland crate, individual water buckets, & beds for all. Safety + comfort are important, we want the pups to be able to actually relax and rest in between sessions.

We make sure to stick close to the cars and check on everyone frequently! 🚐

Some morning thoughts with Edgar about how we can fulfill our dog’s biological needs while on walks. 🐕

My mindset has changed so much in the last decade of professionally coaching dogs and their people. In the beginning of my career, the focus was very much on how we can “fix” the dog or stop unwanted behaviors. These days I focus so much more on the *why* dogs are doing certain behaviors.

Are they in pain? Does their tummy hurt? Have they gotten enough exercise? Getting enough sleep? Do they spend time in nature? Are social needs being met through appropriate interactions with other dogs?

When we break down why an animal is doing something, it can give us a much more effective and ethical behavior plan moving forward.

Today was Wally’s second Training Excursion and we’ve been having tons of fun 🥳

This afternoon’s session we started off rewarding offered focus, a little loose leash walking and recalling away from trash on the ground. Then we broke out the fitness equipment and had a party when Wally put his front or back paws on. Finishing with an introduction to pairing birch oil with food for Nosework foundations.

I love building relationships with new students, figuring out what motivates them & how they learn best brings me great joy! 🥹

I can’t emphasize enough how important play is in dog training 🗣️

Cooper has been coming out on Excursions with us twice a week for years now, giving us lots of time to build a solid relationship through games with clear rules.

I’m super proud of Cooper and Zephyr the teenage Belgian working near Coop while he’s playing, that’s hard stuff! Good boys 👏🏼

Starting focused heeling foundations with Bob 🤩

I’m standing by a wall to create a little hallway to set him up for success, the goal this session is for Bob to be on my left side and look up towards my face. I think he likes this game!

Description: Training Excursion weekly regular, Bob learning the sport dog skill of “focused heeling” at the handler’s side. Heeling can be a fun way to build the bond with your dog. This behavior can be broken down quite a bit to work on precision. Heeling requires lots of body awareness so fitness is important to work on as well.

Who else is pumped for swimming season?!

Baby Sol the English Cocker Spaniel had a blast at the river yesterday. My goal was to make the water a good experience and not pressure him to go in. Spaniels tend to be water loving dogs and Sol was no exception, he took to swimming like a lil fish. 🐠

It’s super cool to watch social learning in action. Sol watched Jade the husky + me go in the water and I think it helped him decide it was safe to join in on the fun.

New challenge: reward your dog each time I say “wow!” or “look at that boy!” to build great engagement with your dog 😆🍪

Group training 🤩🤓

Since it was pretty hot, we brought the Excursion crew to our home this afternoon after a fun morning playing at Rooster Rock.

The goal for this group session was for everyone to practice a calm down around each other. So proud of how well they did!
