👀 If you haven’t noticed, Smitten Kitten Rescue has been doing a lot of TNVR lately.
There is a direct correlation in the number of kittens we care for, and the number of unfixed cats (whether friendly or feral) that exist in the communities we serve.
Feral and community cat numbers in Pocatello and our surrounding communities are overwhelming, and the need for TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) has never been more apparent. Without intervention, these colonies will continue to grow.
We’ve been partnering with both Bannock Feral Friends, and Bannock Humane Society to help combat this growing problem…and All About the Animals Coalition has dedicated an entire feral clinic once per month to aid with spay and neuter! By working together and sharing resources, we’re able to reach more colonies and help more cats.
When we trap kittens young enough to be socialized, we’re keeping them in our rescue, teaching them that humans aren’t so scary, completing all of their medical care, and finding them loving forever homes.
But here’s the REALLY exciting part…
This is PHASE ONE of the MeowHaus Project!
Our community desperately needs more resources to address the growing feral and community cat population, and we’re working hard to make those resources a reality.
Our next big project is our 12’ x 15’ barn shed.
The great news is that it’s already sitting on a foundation, which is AWESOME! The not so great news is that it has suffered extensive water damage over time. We’ll need to take much of it down to the framing and rebuild it properly.
That means we’ll be looking for donations of OSB sheeting, 1/2 inch drywall, weather stripping, 2 new windows, insulation, nails, screws, and other building materials, as well as financial donations to help cover what we can’t get donated.
Once finished, this 180 square foot building will become our MeowHaus storage space for traps, kennels, food, and supplies so we can continue expanding our efforts, and bringing Phase One of MeowHaus to life.
This is about so much more than trapping cats.
It’s about preventing litter after litter of kittens from being born outside. It’s about reducing disease, suffering, and overpopulation. It’s about giving socializable kittens a chance to grow up in homes instead of colonies.
Our community needs this, our businesses need this, the cats need us, and we need our community behind us to make it happen.
One trap, one colony, one kitten, and one step at a time, we’re building MeowHaus.
