One of the most common phrases in scent work is “Trust your dog”.

This morning on our hike through the woods, Ivan was walking at a snail’s pace. At nearly 13, that’s his right. But he wasn’t in pain or tired, he was intensely tracking something. I finally encouraged him to move along, only to round a corner and see a bear.

I was on high alert because his body language and intensity was unusual. I knew something was different and thankfully I spotted the bear before the dogs did.

One of the reasons I love scent work is that it teaches us to be more attentive to our dog’s changes of behaviors and body language and to be more in tune with them in general. Sometimes those changes are much more subtle, but they all mean something. And when you learn to recognize and understand some of those changes, your relationship with your dog will change dramatically.

Fun day today at FASNY Museum of Firefighting! What a great venue for a trial or just to visit. We missed some Qs, but got to meet up with old and new friends. Thank you to all the judges and volunteers at Albany Obedience Club!

We often talk about how scent work helps dogs to become more confident. Last weekend was a brilliant example. We arrived at the CVKC trial to find a beeping sound coming from/near the main entrance. Filli HATES the sound of a smoke detector and that’s exactly what it sounded like. She sits in a corner and shakes when she hears it (which is often if I’m cooking). I knew I had a big problem, so I brought her to the warm up boxes (outside) and heavily rewarded her. We headed inside and I expected her to shut down. Imagine my surprise when she trotted through the door, paying no attention to the beeping. She was absolutely focused and confident and went on to place third in her Adv. Buried class (her only class).
While this is a wonderful, encouraging example of confidence, it also speaks to CONTEXT. This dog has such a positive association to odor, it completely overrode her fear.
Scent Work isn’t a cure all, but it is a super fun activity to help you grow your relationship with your dog. If you haven’t tried it, you should. Private lessons and workshops are available. Kristie Adams

Stevie’s search from the WKC Scent Work Demo. Although the searches were straightforward, the environment was not. I was very pleased with her ability to focus on the task at hand rather than the thousands of people, dogs, sounds and other distractions.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
