Did you know that October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month?

This month long initiative was started by the American Humane Society in 1981! That’s over 40 years ago! Let’s keep it rolling!

TRU Rescue supports the transition of shelter dogs to fosters and ultimately to forever homes. And we have all sorts and types of dogs that might be perfect for YOU! 🐾 BIG DOG. BIG HEART. BIG SLOBBER. FOSTER NEEDED! 🐾

Who doesn’t love a Saint Bernard?! Especially one that comes with a heart of gold and a little extra drool 😂💦

Meet Duncan! ❤️ This handsome, oversized teddy bear found himself wandering the backroads of southern Virginia, severely underweight and with nobody looking for him. 💔

At an estimated 6–8 years young, Duncan is a laid-back, gentle giant who seems to have missed the memo that life hasn’t always been kind to him.

🐾 Dog friendly? CHECK!
🐱 Cat friendly? So far, so good!
❤️ Sweet, mellow, lovable? TRIPLE CHECK!
💦 Slobber included? It’s a Saint Bernard, folks. Consider it complimentary!

Duncan has some some weight to gain and definitely needs a little TLC, but what he needs most is someone willing to open their home and give this big guy the soft landing he deserves.

🐻 MEET BALOO! 🐻

Baloo made quite the journey to TRU Rescue all the way from Kosovo, and now this sweet guy is looking for a special home to help him through the next chapter of his life. 💙

Baloo can be a little timid at times, and considering his history and the discomfort he’s been living with, we can’t blame him. Unfortunately, we recently learned that this young boy will need a total hip replacement.

The good news? TRU Rescue will cover the cost of his surgery. 🙌 What we would LOVE is to find Baloo a foster-to-adopt home where he can settle in before surgery and have a familiar, comfortable place to recover afterward.

🐾 A little about Baloo:
• Dog friendly — currently living happily with two larger dogs
• Enjoys playing tug with people and other dogs
• Loves crinkly and squeaky toys
• Enjoys walks and does pretty well on leash
• Mostly housebroken, although his signals to go outside can be subtle
• Loves lounging and watching the world go by through the window — give this boy a view or your blinds may pay the price 😂
• Likes being near his people, but he’s more of a “hang out beside you” guy than a cuddler
• Curious about cats and outdoor critters, although we don’t know how he would do living with cats

Baloo doesn’t need someone to feel sorry for him — he needs someone willing to give him stability, patience, and a safe place to land while we get that painful hip fixed. ❤️

Alex is being surrendered to us to not fault of his own. He’s a sweet boy who currently lives with children, one being special needs, and doesn’t seem to mind cats. His owner is moving but cannot take him along 😔 He is 5 years old and weighs around 8lbs.

Little Polo and Marco had transport secured tomorrow, but plans have changed with our volunteer driver. If anyone is able to pick them up from the shelter at 3 PM tomorrow and get them up to a foster in Harrisburg PA, please let us know!

MARCO is in need of a foster home where he can get the much deserved R&R he needs.

Marco is a 12 pound 2 year-old Chihuahua. The shelter said he is very playful, very people social climbing into everyone’s lap wanting attention. He loves receiving pets and will lean right in for them. We’re told he is a little spoiled and likes to be carried around ☺️ enjoys playing with toys and said to be playful with other dogs (with proper intro of course).

As you can see, unfortunately, he will need vet care for the cherry eye he has. His urine was also said to be a bit diluted.

If you have room for this little fella to stay with you for a little while to get the vet care, he needs and find his forever home, please let us know!

🚨 URGENT FOSTER NEEDED — NALA MAY BE IN LABOR TODAY! 🚨

We have an urgent plea from one of our shelter partners in West Virginia, and we desperately want to help this girl — but we need a foster to step up NOW.

Meet Nala, a petite Treeing Walker Hound who is just 1–2 years old and only a little bigger than a Beagle. Nala was dumped, ended up in the shelter, and is now heavily pregnant. The shelter believes she may actually be going into labor TODAY. 💔

A loud, stressful shelter kennel is no place for a mama to deliver and raise her newborn babies. Nala is already overwhelmed by all the dogs around her, and right now she needs a quiet, safe environment where she and her puppies can decompress.

🐾 A little about Nala:
• 1–2 years old
• Petite — slightly bigger than a Beagle
• House trained
• Great on a leash
• Good with people
• Dewormed
• Has received her parvo vaccine without lepto
• Currently stressed by other dogs in the kennel environment

🏡 WHAT DOES FOSTERING NALA INVOLVE?

We need someone willing to foster Nala and her puppies until the babies are weaned, typically around 6–8 weeks. Once the puppies are weaned, we can begin working on finding additional foster homes.

And you will NOT be doing this alone!

❤️ TRU Rescue will provide the supplies you need, along with guidance, mentoring and support throughout the process. What we need from you is a safe, quiet space and the willingness to give this mama the security she desperately needs.

Yes, fostering a mama and puppies is a commitment — but for the next several weeks, you could be their entire world.

Instead of giving birth surrounded by barking dogs and the stress of a shelter kennel, Nala could bring her babies into the world somewhere she finally feels safe.

We really, really want to get this girl out. We just need someone to say YES. 🙏❤️

🚨 14 MONTHS. How is this even possible?! 🚨

How in the world has ELMER been waiting 14 MONTHS for his forever home?! 😭💔

Because seriously, this dog is THE WHOLE PACKAGE.

Elmer had the unfortunate luck of being born a black pittie-type dog in a world where dogs who look like him are too often overlooked.

Because let’s be real… if Elmer were a fluffy, blonde doodle with this résumé, he would’ve been adopted ten trillion times already. 😂🤷‍♀️

But underneath that handsome black coat is one of the sweetest, happiest, most well-rounded boys you could ask for. 💜

Elmer has been through a LOT. He underwent entropion surgery, completed a board-and-train program AND graduated 🎓🐾 — yet somehow none of it has dampened his happy-go-lucky personality or his love for people.

And this boy could fit into SO many different households! His current fosters are in their 70s, he absolutely ADORES children, and he loves pretty much everyone in between.
