❤️ Earl’s Road to Recovery!🐾
Earl came to our clinic lethargic and unable to stand. After an examination and diagnostic testing, Dr. Nourah discovered that Earl had IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia), an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to destroy its own red blood cells.
Initially, Earl was stable enough for outpatient care with medication and a recheck scheduled for the following week. Unfortunately, he struggled to take his medication and returned within days in much worse condition. His IMHA had progressed, and his red blood cell count had dropped to dangerously low levels. A blood transfusion was his only option.❤️ Here’s a fun fact about dog blood transfusions!Dogs can generally receive their first transfusion without a prior blood-type match, but subsequent transfusions require blood typing and compatibility testing. Cats, on the other hand, require blood-type matching with every transfusion.
That’s where our amazing team came through! Sydney, one of our wonderful team members, nominated her sweet boy, Buck, to be Earl’s blood donor. Thanks to Buck’s generosity and our incredible team, Earl received the lifesaving transfusion he needed!
🎉 Fast-forward three weeks, and we have wonderful news! Earl’s red blood cell count has returned to normal, and he is stable! He’s continuing a low-dose medication regimen and will need checks every two weeks until his levels are balanced, followed by ongoing monitoring.
We are incredibly thankful for Dr. Nourah, Chloe, Journey, Sydney and Buck, and our entire team for coming together to give Earl this second chance. This is exactly the outcome we were hoping for!
🐾 Way to go, Earl! And a big thank-you to Buck for being a hero! ❤️
