🐾 Dennis Update 🐾

Pictures & Videos in the link below 👇

If you've been following Dennis's journey, here's what we've learned about him so far.

Dennis is approximately 3 years old and has spent over a year waiting for a home at Pet Project in Marseilles. Despite that, he continues to show us what an incredible companion he can be.

✅ Potty trained
✅ Great with people and visitors
✅ Can do well with compatible canine companions
✅ Excellent travel companion
✅ Crate trained

One of the things I love about Dennis is how adaptable he is. His energy level can range from low to high depending on the environment. If there's something going on, he's happy to be involved and explore. When it's time to relax, he can settle in and enjoy hanging out with his people.

Dennis recently joined me on a 4-hour road trip and was an absolute gentleman in the vehicle. No issues, no stress, just a great companion for the ride.

When interacting with other dogs, Dennis enjoys play and can sometimes be a little rough and rowdy, but he responds well to direction and does a nice job matching the energy of the dog he's with. He isn't looking for conflict. He simply enjoys being social and having fun.

We're continuing to work on loose leash walking, place work, recall, and overall house manners, but the biggest thing Dennis needs isn't training. He needs someone willing to give him a chance.

After more than a year in the shelter, Dennis deserves a couch to call his own, a family to come home to, and the opportunity to show just how good of a dog he truly is.

If you're looking for a friendly, social dog who enjoys adventures, road trips, and spending time with people, Dennis might be your guy. ❤️

I decided to post and share some of the skill set that our Advanced drop in dogs have. Not all of these dogs came to this class performing at this level. Each one started at the bottom of the ladder and worked their way to the top. Some of them even doing private lessons in between to get that extra help. But remember dogs will be dogs so everything isn't always perfect and clean. It's about being consistent and having fun. After we did some work on the playground equipment, we did some obedience at the basketball court, and then we played a little hide and seek behind the trees. It was a great day for Kana, our Day Training dog as well!

Good Obedience ≠ Good Behavior
A dog having good obedience skills doesn’t necessarily mean they will make good choices when it matters.
They can know all the tricks in the book, but if there’s food on the floor and a toddler nearby, are they really going to walk into that room and leave the food alone? Probably not—unless you’ve actually taught them impulse control and built those expectations into everyday life.
One of the best things you can do for your dog is establish calm, consistent leadership inside the home.
That means having clear door manners and routines. It means working on place when people come through the door or while you’re eating dinner. It means practicing impulse control with play, toys, and food. It means teaching your dog that jumping on you, demanding attention, or demanding to be petted isn’t how they get what they want. The list goes on.
These things may seem small, but they create the foundation for a dog that can control themselves when distractions and excitement are high.
Stop thinking of your dogs as humans. They’re dogs. Understanding how dogs communicate, interact, and establish boundaries can help you better understand what your dog needs from you.
And remember: being a leader doesn't mean being aggressive, intimidating, or “dominant.”
Real leadership is calm, consistent, confident, and fair.
