Watch to the end for Anya’s new summer hairdo!
Anya is our Komondor Livestock Guardian Dog. Komondors are the large famous “mop dogs” who grow their hair in cords that can drag the ground! While I find the cords beautiful, they are not suited for 100 degree, high humidity Indiana summers. And Anya is an absolute water-lover in the heat! The cords hold that water, and give her skin issues.
She can’t do her job locked in a dry kennel! So she gets 2 quick haircuts a year and still has PLENTY of floof grown back for her winter outside (she was shaved 5 months ago for reference!)
Komondor hair grows continuously (hence the cords eventually reaching the ground) They are a fabulously good natured breed, and she has been an excellent Gaurdian for us. I couldn’t ask for a kinder, softer, gentler dog- who also has been very easy to train, introduce to strangers, and is not obsessed with escaping! 20 minutes of grooming twice a year is a great trade for her wonderful temperament!
It is a bit of a sin in the Komondor world to clip them instead of growing out the cords, but it is what works best for her, her job, and her happiness level all summer long. She’s not fighting wolves in the mountains, and there is far more of quality to the breed than just their signature hairdo! 😉
