We are a NO KILL municipal shelter that provides animal control service for the Town of Newburgh, and we are dedicated to keeping our community safe and compassionate while transforming the lives of animals. We are not always in the office during business hours due to road work and patrols. If you are looking to donate any items, please feel free to leave them beside the door and we will get them

when we return. Impounded animals will be available after their stray hold and vetting is complete. We are unable to foster dogs however, we do foster cats and kittens. Volunteering is always welcome; you can pick up a volunteer application from our shelter any time. We do not do community service hours. Monetary donations are always welcome.

🔆🐾FIVE MINUTES IS TOO LONG🐾🔆

Given that this has been an extremely hot week here in the Northeast and summer is just right around the corner, this is an important reminder that animals should NEVER be left in a hot vehicle. A parked vehicle can become deadly for an animal in just a matter of minutes! The safest choice is simple: LEAVE PETS AT HOME when errands require you to leave the vehicle.

🚨ATTENTION TOWN RESIDENTS🚨

Our office is aware of a black bear and her 3-4🐻🐾cubs in the areas of Cronomer Valley and Fostertown. While sightings can be concerning, black bears are a natural part of New York's wildlife. They often are just passing through, looking for their next meal.

Because this is a mother bear with her cubs, extra caution is strongly advised, as bears are very protective of their young and will become very aggressive if approached or threatened.
‼️DO NOT APPROACH THEM‼️

To help prevent attracting bears, residents should secure garbage cans with locks or straps and bring them inside your garage if possible. We recommend removing all wildlife feeders as well.

Please note that our department does not have the authority or capabilities to trap and relocate bears. Residents are encouraged to report all sightings directly to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Region 3 office. They can be reached at (845) 256-3098.

By removing attracting items and giving wildlife their space, we can keep both residents and bears safe. Thank you!

📚Fun Fact Friday🐢

Did you know that Painted Turtles cannot eat their food unless their mouths are submerged in water? This is because their tongues cannot move freely, which makes it harder to manipulate food on land. They are also the most common species found in New York State.
