Metropolitan Maltese Rescue

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue Our vision is to be an active partner of a no-kill community where there are no homeless pets. Every foster and permanent home is carefully screened.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue is a non-profit corporation (501(c) (3)) dedicated to placing homeless Maltese and Maltese-mixes in loving, responsible, permanent homes. Metropolitan Maltese Rescue (MetroMalts) is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1998 by a group of Maltese dog lovers in New York City. MetroMalts volunteers foster and place Maltese found as strays, surrendered by their owners,

or rescued from shelters. We use every means at our disposal to keep Maltese out of shelters and in good forever-after homes. Information provided by potential adopters is used to make sure that our Maltese are placed with care-givers who are best suited to their individual personalities. We remain available after adoption to help resolve any concerns or problems that might arise. We gladly accept donations of time, professional advice and care (such as veterinarians and trainers), and financial assistance. We welcome people who just love the breed and want to help. After all, that's how MetroMalts began. MetroMalts is a proud member of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., a distinguished group of local shelter and rescue organizations dedicated to making ours a "no kill" city.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue like to hear from our graduates, even when the story is a sad one:

"It’s with great sadness that I share that Mini Cooper has passed, at approximately 14 years old. He’s now running free with his brother Romeo. I was lucky to adopt him on January 19, 2019. He came way along in these last 7 plus years. We ran agility, took scent work classes ,and went to agility, scent work and Happy Ratter trials together, where he earned some beginner level titles. We saw Kathie and Indie (also a Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate) at several Happy Ratters and Scentwork trials. I was proud of all his accomplishments, and we always had fun at the trials. We had so many fun memories together. Every summer, we went to New Hampshire and enjoyed our vacation on a lake.

Thank you for letting me adopt him and giving him his forever home with me. I miss him, but know he is running free with his brother Romeo. Cooper had another brother Zack for the last 6 months of his life."

Sweet, sweet Cooper. And his cute pictures bring us into a sweet weekend. Give your pets big hugs, and TGIF.

And today we at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue marvel at our cute totally-not-a-Maltese, Lexi.

Lexi came to Metropolitan Maltese Rescue back in January 2010 from a local shelter where she had been in residence since October 2009. The shelter had told us that they had a 5 pound male Maltese to give us for adoption placement, and when our volunteer went to pick up the dog, Lexi is who she was given - a 10 pound, estimated to be 2 year old tan female terrier mix.

And here we are, 16 years later, and Lexi has just celebrated her 16th gotcha day with her forever family. AMAZING!

Hooray for longevity and love 💕

And hooray for weekends! TGIF

Whether Metropolitan Maltese Rescue’s 11 year-old graduate Little Lamb dresses as his au natural Maltese-Poodle mix self, or adds a festive and seasonal eyepatch, he is ready to run down those stairs and seek hidden Easter eggs this weekend. And doesn’t he have absolutely the perfect name for the season?!

And whether Easter is your holiday or not, we wish you a wonderful spring weekend! TGIF. 🌷🌸🌷

Last Friday, we shared the story of how Metropolitan Maltese Rescue came into being, and how satisfying our volunteers find it to take-in the dogs who need new homes, and to find new homes for them.

We love seeing everyone’s replies and the photos of the dogs that they love so much!

Here is another picture of a happily ever after scene, brought into being by Metropolitan Maltese Rescue.

Fridays give a happily ever after feeling as well. TGIF.

People often ask the volunteers of Metropolitan Maltese Rescue “Why do Maltese dogs need rescue?” The founders of the group had discovered that Maltese, because they are a popular breed, so their numbers are high in our area, often could be found in local shelters. This compelled them to set out to help with that reality.

And photos such as this, showing a dog who went from being a homeless stray who ended up in a city shelter, is 100% of the reason why we rescue! And this photo represents the goal we have for all of the dogs we have ever taken in.

And the weekends also give us joy and comfort. TGIF

The grass is back, and it feels like spring. At least for now. And isn't it wonderful that the real spring is so soon? Time for all Maltese - no, wait, all dogs - to cover themselves in the scent of the season, as Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate Chanel demonstrates before looking to us for approval that she did it properly.

A solid score of 10 for ex*****on and another 10 for cuteness! And of course another 10 for the weekend! TGIF.

As much as the story of Punch The Monkey and his stuffed monkey has captivated the world, it has had special meaning to the family of Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate, Roo. Roo also has a stuffed monkey that has been her always–companion from the moment she arrived into foster care from a dog meat facility in Korea. The monkey went with Roo from her foster home to her adoptive home, and is hers forever. She will accept no less.

And we will accept no less than the weekend. TGIF.

The challenge with being only 7 inches tall is not lost on 4 pound Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate, Roo. This week’s blizzard left snow that is 21 inches, so three Roo’s high in her yard. And the drifts are even worse. She is not amused. And then she is not even allowed cocoa on her return to the warm inside. No chocolate for dogs! What a week!

Here is hoping for a better weekend. TGIF.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue love to hear from our graduates and know how loved they have been, even when the update is a sad one.

Lola's family let us know that she has sadly passed away. But in her loss, they also remember the happiness:

Thank you for always providing us Fur babies that brought us years of Joy & Laughter!

And that is why we do this rescue work - good and loving families for good and sweet pups. Weekends are good, too. TGIF.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue ❤️to hear from our graduates, and isn't this Valentine's Day weekend of love the perfect time to hear about more love? Cooper's mom reached out:

Ohh i am a happy camper… one year ago I adopted my Cooper from your organization… he was 9 when I got him… he is the best doggie ever… Thank you!!

Now go on out and spread some love! 💕 TGIF.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue love to hear from our graduates, but sometimes the news is not happy. Here is a sad update on Leo Blue, one of the litter of "color puppies" we had over 10 years ago, so-named because we dyed their tails with food coloring to distinguish one from the other:

With great sadness, we had to say goodbye to our beautiful boy Leo Blue on Friday 1/23. It had been a roller coaster with Leo’s health since he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure a few months ago. Our second trip to ER on Friday in under a month could not save him. His heart failed. We are heartbroken. Leo was the best boy with the biggest personality. He filled our house with love and joy. We loved and enjoyed our 10 1/2 years together. I hope he’s reunited with his sister Allie in Heaven. 🙏

Thank you MMR for our gift of precious Leo. ❤️💔

And we are featuring a recent photo of Leo Blue and a video of him from his puppyhood in foster care with his siblings Pink and Purple.

While the news is sad, Fridays are still happy. TGIF.
