Metropolitan Maltese Rescue

Our vision is to be an active partner of a no-kill community where there are no homeless pets. Every foster and permanent home is carefully screened.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue is a non-profit corporation (501(c) (3)) dedicated to placing homeless Maltese and Maltese-mixes in loving, responsible, permanent homes. Metropolitan Maltese Rescue (MetroMalts) is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1998 by a group of Maltese dog lovers in New York City. MetroMalts volunteers foster and place Maltese found as strays, surrendered by their owners,

or rescued from shelters. We use every means at our disposal to keep Maltese out of shelters and in good forever-after homes. Information provided by potential adopters is used to make sure that our Maltese are placed with care-givers who are best suited to their individual personalities. We remain available after adoption to help resolve any concerns or problems that might arise. We gladly accept donations of time, professional advice and care (such as veterinarians and trainers), and financial assistance. We welcome people who just love the breed and want to help. After all, that's how MetroMalts began. MetroMalts is a proud member of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., a distinguished group of local shelter and rescue organizations dedicated to making ours a "no kill" city.

We are unsure if Metropolitan Maltese Rescue's former foster dog Paradise was incognito for fun or from being in a witness protection program, or if she was just drag-friendly, but here is a flashback shot of her on a brisk walk about the neighborhood. Smiling all the way.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue ♥️ to hear from our adopters, even when the story is the last that we will hear. Lexi lived a long life, likely 17 or 18 years, and with just the right family for her, who let her grow to be the good girl that she could really be. Rest in peace, Lexi. And TGIF.

“Weeks passed, and the little Rabbit grew very old and shabby, but the Boy loved him just as much. He loved him so hard that he loved all his whiskers off, and the pink lining to his ears turned grey, and his brown spots faded. He even began to lose his shape and he scarcely looked like a rabbit anymore, except to the Boy. To him he was always beautiful, and that was all the little Rabbit cared about. He didn’t mind how he looked to other people, because the nursery magic had made him Real and when you are Real shabbiness doesn’t matter” (The Velveteen Rabbit)
Lexi thank you for being by my side. My heart is broken but will always be filled with such loving memories of my sweet girl.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue wanted to share a throw-back photo of a Maltese who came into foster care with us, and then stayed on as a permanent foster until the end of his life at around 18 year old: Tulsa.

Tulsa and Tulsa's cat Molly came to us some years ago by their surrendering family. And truly, Molly was deemed NOT to be the family's in general...she was Tulsa's cat and was surrendered along with all of Tulsa's other belongings. Tulsa proved to have some physical challenges that made finding him an adoptive home difficult, and Molly disliked everyone but Tulsa, so kind of had to stay with him, and their foster family was happy to keep them both, though their lives.

Tulsa really had a great life at his foster home, playing with the resident dogs, having a fenced yard to go out in (he could not wear a collar or harness, and thus could not be leashed), and being a gentle and kind host to the many other foster dogs who cycled through the home while awaiting their forever homes. Tulsa also aptly demonstrated all of the best spots for naps, as you can see here.

And maybe some naps are on your weekend agenda? You might not choose a basket in which to do so, but follow Tulsa's demonstration and find a comfy spot! TGIF.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue are always glad to hear from our graduates. This one is especially great, since we had Peppa (and Salt!) in foster care for 11 months, which is way longer than average.

Those who follow us know all of the health and socialization hurdles these boys (and their foster family!) worked hard to overcome, and for those who don't know, we recommend looking back at our posts from January through November 2025 to follow along. We know so many of you were invested in and helped fund their successes, so this is an update we can ALL appreciate!

"This is Peppa. He is doing extremely well. He is lovable and cuddly and has a huge yard of which he now is considering himself the land baron LOL. He is at a 11 lb healthy weight, and I Thank God everyday for him. He also likes lounging in the sun in his bed. Thank you Beth and Metropolitan Rescue for bringing such joy into my life."
