We are not funded by the city, the county, or any national humane organizations. HSNBA holds contracts with the City of New Braunfels and Comal County to house stray animals brought in by their Animal Control Divisions. We also accept stray pets brought in by citizens and if space allows, pets whose owners can no longer care for them. Therefore, we are inundated daily with homeless pets and have n

o control over the number or type of animals that enter our shelter. We handle approximately 5,000 animals a year and at any given time care for approximately 100 cats and 100 dogs. The revenue we collect from our contracts covers approximately three days of care per animal and their intake vaccinations. If the animal stays longer, or needs any veterinary care, we rely on donations and adoption fees to cover those costs. The pet overpopulation problem is real and while the bulk of the burden falls on the shoulders of the HSNBA, it is a community problem - a problem that the community and HSNBA can solve if we work together. After more than one year with HSNBA, Fenrir has found his family. ❤️✨🎉

There are some dogs who leave a lasting mark on everyone they meet, and Fenrir was one of them. After more than a year in our care, this shelter staff and volunteer favorite has finally found the perfect family to call his own.

Read what Fenrir’s former foster had to say about the magical moment when everything fell into place:

“We met his new family Thursday evening and Fen chose them himself!! He was such a love bug and would wag his entire back end when they called his name! Friday after they completed the adoption paperwork, I brought Fen to his new home. On the way there, Fen was giving me kisses from the back seat as if he knew it was our last car ride. Once we arrived, he pulled me right to their front door and wanted in. As soon as they opened the door, I took off his leash and he ran into the living room to grab his new toys that were on the floor. I spent about 20 minutes there on the floor while Fen played with his new toys and chewed on his Busy Bone. He stopped at one point, came up to me and was kissing me all over. Then he stepped on my legs till her was raised to the side of my head by my ear, and his new mom said, “Awwwww, he’s giving you a hug.” I totally lost it, broke down crying, and told Fen he needed to go to his new parents. He removed his head from my shoulders. got off my legs and went to lie back on the floor with his toys and bone. I told his family that I should leave, and they offered that I may come by any time, but I told them it was best for both Fen and me to make a clean break, or we would always be bonded, and he needs to start his new life immediately. As I was walking down the hallway toward the door, Fen grabbed his bone and followed me. I asked his dad to take him to the backyard so Fen wouldn’t see me walk out the door in fear that he might sit there wondering when & if I was going to come back. His dad called him, and Fen went running back to him, and they went toward the back door as I made my way out the front door. I cried all the way home.😭”

We’re so happy for Fenrir and cannot thank everyone who had a hand in making this possible enough, with a special shoutout to his former foster, Jacqui, and one of his favorite volunteers, James! 💕

It took a village to get Fenrir to this moment, and we’re so grateful to everyone who loved him, advocated for him, shared his story, and helped him along the way.

Happening TOMORROW! 📚😻

It’s almost here! This Saturday, August 8th, from 1 PM to 5 PM, we’re joining the Westside Branch of the New Braunfels Public Library for the Checkout a Cat for Life Adoption Event!

During this event, all adoption fees are half price, making kittens just $50 and adult cats $25!

All kittens joining us have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated with age-appropriate vaccines, treated for common parasites and fleas, and microchipped. They’re adoption-ready and can head home with you directly from the event!

Juno has been hitting the books in preparation for Checkout a Cat for Life happening TOMORROW! 📚

This Saturday, August 8th, from 1 PM to 5 PM, we’re joining the Westside Branch of the New Braunfels Public Library for an afternoon full of adoption-ready kittens looking for their new families! During the event, all adoption fees will be reduced by half, making kittens $50 and adults $25.

One of the kittens joining us is Juno, an 11-week-old boy who has been living his best life in the loving care of his foster home! After getting neutered this week, Juno is officially adoption-ready and looking to turn the page to his next chapter. 📖❤️

Here is what his foster had to say:

“If you are ready for your heart to melt, then Juno is your guy! He is a super sweet and cuddly tux boy who loves to be loved. Juno wants to be carried around, give kisses, lay in your lap, and know what you are doing at all times.

He also has a very fun and sweet playful side! He loves to run through his cat tunnel over and over as well as chase a feather wand. Besides cuddles and kisses, the true way to his heart is yummy kitten wet food.

Juno has 5 siblings and gets along well with all of them. While he isn't a high-energy wrestling guy, he loves to chase and mostly just wants to know where his human is and when the next cuddle session starts.”

Big News for the Cats at HSNBA! 🐱🎉

Our Kitten Hubs are growing, and we’re excited to welcome a brand-new location: Ruff Town Rescue 🥳

For those who may not know, HSNBA partners with local businesses to host offsite Kitten Hubs, where adoption-ready cats and kittens can be seen and adopted directly from the store. We currently have Kitten Hubs at Tomlinson’s Feed and Pet Supplies Plus, and now Ruff Town Rescue is joining the fun!

On Thursday, we moved a cage and two adorable kittens into Ruff Town Rescue, and it didn’t take long for the magic to happen. One of the kittens was adopted within just a few hours! 🎉

Raven is still there and excited to meet someone looking to add a new feline friend to their family. 🖤

The City Of New Braunfels is again urging residents to be cautious with unfamiliar animals following a recently confirmed case of rabies. Local health officials remind everyone to be cautious around foxes, raccoons, bats, skunks, and stray dogs or cats.

City of New Braunfels Animal Welfare employees recently recovered a deceased fox that had died after coming into contact with an adult female. Subsequent testing confirmed the fox had rabies, a deadly viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans, and is primarily transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, often through bites. To reduce risk and help prevent the spread of rabies:

• Keep dogs and pets on a leash; do not allow them to roam freely
• Avoid approaching or feeding wildlife such as foxes, raccoons, bats, or skunks
• Keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations
• Secure garbage and pet food to avoid attracting wild animals
• Avoid contact with bats. If one is inside your home, contain it and contact authorities
• Seek medical attention immediately for any bites or scratches
• Do not touch sick or injured animals
• Report unusual animal behavior

Signs of rabies in animals may include partial paralysis, difficulty walking, circling or staggering, unprovoked aggression, or unusually tame behavior. If you observe these signs, do not approach the animal. To report an animal displaying unusual behavior, contact New Braunfels Animal Welfare at 830-608-2183.

Foster Feature: Nike and Raven Are Ready for Checkout! 📚🐾

This Saturday, August 8th, from 1 PM to 5 PM, we’re joining the Westside Branch of the New Braunfels Public Library for Checkout a Cat for Life! During this adoption event, adoption fees will be reduced by half, and we’ll have a TON of adoption-ready kittens excited to meet you!

Two of the kittens who are joining us are littermates, Nike and Raven! These two 15-week-old brothers can be adopted separately, but they are a great match who would love the chance to stay together!

Nike and Raven may have very different personalities, but together, they make the perfect pair!

Nike is the gentle, thoughtful big brother. He can be shy at first, but once he knows you’re a friend, he becomes the sweetest little love bug. Raven is his confident and fearless sidekick, always ready to chase toys, wrestle with his siblings, or launch one of his signature sneak attacks!

When playtime is over, both boys are happy to settle in for cuddles and cozy naps. Nike and Raven share an especially close bond, and you can often find them curled up together.

Both kittens would thrive with a playful feline friend, but they would especially love the chance to be adopted together. Could this adorable duo be the missing piece in your family? 🐱❤️

Thankful Thursday! 💛

This week, we want to give a HUGE shout-out to a longtime friend of HSNBA, Susan Mellor Buch, for the hard work she puts into collecting cans and other metals to raise money for the pets in our care!

All year long, Susan collects everything from beverage and pet food cans to other recyclable metals she finds along the way. This year, she collected TWO large loads of metal and donated an incredible $1,835 after turning them in!

This is truly a labor of love, and we cannot thank Susan and everyone who had a hand in helping her enough for their generosity and continued dedication to our mission! 💛

Foster Feature: Meet Pleasanton and Pandora! 💕

“Pandora has two settings: play and purr. She is a lap cat and purr fiend who does not accept ‘no, not now’ as an answer, and a whirlwind wrapped in brindle fur who will chase and pounce and run and play. She’s usually found cuddling or wrestling her sister, if she isn’t in or demanding to be in your lap.

Pleasanton is a mellow, easy-going sweetheart, unless you are taking away her crinkle mouse. She is the one carrying her crinkle mouse around, growling, while chasing the feather toy. She is faster than any of her siblings, but mostly wants to play a little, cuddle a little, and go along with the flow.”

Foster Feature: Salem is Ready for Checkout a Cat for Life! 📚🐱

This Saturday, August 8th, from 1 PM to 5 PM, we’re joining the Westside Branch of the New Braunfels Public Library for Checkout a Cat for Life! During this adoption event, adoption fees will be reduced by half, and we’ll have a TON of adoption-ready kittens excited to meet you!

One of those kittens is Salem, a female kitten who is around 20 weeks old! Here is what her foster had to say:

“I took Salem home from the shelter because I love medical cases, and she was so small for her size! She was around half a pound at 6 weeks old. I just loved her energy and how she had a will to live. I've included her intake photo just so you can see how far this girl has come. I remember sending a photo to all of the staff once she finally hit 1 lb. I'm including this photo as well just because it was a milestone for her. She is very small for her size, but I don't know if she will continue to grow or stay petite. She has the shortest little fur and a face that reminds me of a Bombay cat, and her pictures don't do her justice for just how cute she is.

I have fostered over 250 kittens, and I can say without a doubt that Salem is one of the best kittens I've ever fostered. She is curious and loves to be held and cuddled. She is amazing with all of my kids, including my 1-year-old. Her favorite toy are the plastic caps that come on those applesauce pouches, which of course my kids leave on the floor all the time. She bats those around to no end! She also absolutely loves the laser pointer.

She deserves an extremely special home where she will get all of the attention in the world. She is great with other cats and kittens, but she hasn't been around dogs much but I don't think that would be an issue. We do request an indoor only home where she will thrive.”

Update: Hidey has been adopted into a loving family! 🎉

🚨 Hidey is At-Risk: Deadline is Friday, August 7th, at 5 PM. 🚨

The Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area is in a space crisis, and we once again need our community’s help to save four dogs who are ready for loving homes today.

Our kennels have been full for months. We have moved dogs into foster homes, hosted waived-fee adoption events, shared them across social media, local newspapers, television, and radio, and introduced them to the community through Doggy Day Out and local events.

Our staff and volunteers are working hard every day to care for the overwhelming number of pets entering our shelter, but we cannot solve this crisis alone. Every regular kennel is occupied, and pop-up cages now line our hallways, breakroom, and staff offices.

But we are part of a large and compassionate community with thousands of homes and more than 200,000 people who have the power to change the outcome for these four dogs and every pet who enters HSNBA. If just 20 more families opened their homes to foster, it would make a tremendous difference in our overcrowding crisis. We need more people to step up and open their homes to pets in need today.

Hidey is a textbook Lab with the sweetest demeanor! She is a total Velcro dog who loves fetch, training time, and being as close to her people as possible.

Hidey may greet you with plenty of enthusiasm, but once she burns off a little energy, she is ready to focus. She already knows sit, down, paw, and high five, and she loves learning new tricks. She is also a big fan of stuffies and fetch, although returning the ball sometimes turns into an unexpected game of tag!

After playtime, Hidey is all about affection. The moment you sit down, she will happily climb into your lap and settle in for cuddles. We have tried explaining that she may be a little too big to be a lap dog, but Hidey strongly disagrees.

If you have other dogs at home, a meet-and-greet will be required so HSNBA staff can help ensure a smooth transition. We do not know how Hidey is with cats, but our staff is always ready to share tips and tricks for introducing and acclimating new pets. Her adoption fee has been waived to help her find the right home.

By 5 PM on FRIDAY, August 7th, Hidey needs one of the following:

- Adoption into a committed home
- Rescue placement
- Long-term foster placement
