We’ve been working on a little magic behind the scenes here at Orion Ranch Sanctuary… and it involves some incredible new horses and a partnership with a BIG rescue many of you already know! It’s an opportunity to help even more horses find long term safety and sanctuary—something we’re deeply grateful to be able to do.

Today, we said goodbye to an extraordinary horse. Sparky was just 23 years young. He was one of our earliest rescues and most intense rehabilitation cases. When he arrived, he had never had his teeth floated. It took 8 months of careful, slow rehab and a dental specialist to get him on track.

Sparky blossomed into a total superstar in our programs. He was gentle and trustworthy enough to be surrounded by groups of children. And not only that, he loved every single moment of it.

Sparky is a testament to the fact that just because a horse may look broken, some can still be saved. We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have known him and to have provided a life where he could truly shine.

Sparky faced a twisted gut requiring a heartbreaking emergency humane euthanasia. We stayed by his side, loving him through his final moments, just as we have through every chapter of his life here. All of his herd mates were given the opportunity to say goodbye, and so they did.

Rest easy, Sparky. Forever in green pastures watching over his Orion family🌟💫✨

With everything going on right now, we can’t help but think of our sweet mustang Cash. He is living proof of what recent investigations by Skydog Sanctuary and The New York Times have brought to the public eye. Federally protected mustangs are being funneled into the slaughter pipeline through loopholes and resale schemes.

Slaughtering wild horses is illegal, yet thousands have disappeared this way. Cash came to us with ZERO paperwork and information, but his BLM brand told the truth. Brutally rounded up and ripped away from his family, he’s one of countless mustangs who faced this fate.

Today, Cash is safe. He will never again have to say goodbye to his family. His story is a reminder of why rescue and advocacy matter.

The majority of our herd is made up of domestic horses who were once bound for slaughter. This crisis isn’t limited to wild mustangs. It’s happening to horses across the United States. We remain hopeful that real protections are coming. Not just for mustangs, but for ALL horses.

Many of the horses at our sanctuary came to us after being sent to slaughter. They were discarded by their owners after years of hard labor plowing fields, pulling carts and destroying their bodies in service to humans. We can’t undo that past, and we’ll never fully understand it, but we can give them what they were denied. Safety, dignity, and a life lived on their own terms.

Horses are sentient beings. They feel, remember, bond, and grieve. They deserve the same right as any living creature. They deserve to live out their days with respect and peace.

Over the last few months, our senior draft horse Dutch has been quietly fighting a major health battle.

On May 2nd, Dutch presented with sudden inflammation in his front left leg. By May 3rd, two green abscesses ruptured, followed by a snotty nose. It was the beginning of a long road ahead.

On May 4th, he went to the vet for his first PCR test for strangles. This was the start of five total PCR tests and strict quarantine to keep everyone safe. We test every horse who comes in so he picked it up unknowingly from somewhere.

Dutch received multiple antibiotics, a full scope and guttural pouch flush, Silver Lining Herbs immune support, and Metastim to boost his own immune system.

Through every setback, Dutch stayed patient, gentle, and determined - the leg flushing, the bandaging, the injections. He was and is a true gem.

After months of care, Dutch is finally testing negative for strangles and today he was reunited with his herd!

His herd was so happy to have him back and we’re beyond thankful that Dutch pulled through. He has the heart of a champion.

This is what sanctuary work looks like… commitment, compassion, and never giving up on the seniors who need us most❤️
