π©Ί Cooper came to see us because he was coughing, panting a lot, and his belly looked swollen.
His workup gave us the answer: heartworm disease. Heartworms live in the major vessels of the heart, which is why the signs show up in a dog's chest and in his energy.
Cooper started heartworm treatment. It is a long road, and the injections go deep into the back muscles, so he is getting plenty of gentle handling and rest along the way. We are rooting for this good boy. β€οΈ
Heartworm comes from a single mosquito bite, and year round prevention is the easiest way to keep your dog off this road. If your pup is due, ask your vet about a heartworm test and a prevention plan.
Coughing, tiring out fast, or breathing hard at home? We are here 7 days a week for urgent care. πΎ
