What if the halter comes AFTER the connection?

At the time of this video, Rebel had never worn a halter. No rope connected us, and nothing kept him beside me. He could walk away at any moment… yet he chose to stay. Trust is the foundation with every Mustang. But Rebel showed me just how carefully that trust sometimes has to be protected. Push too far or ask at the wrong moment, and you can lose what took so long to build. So I learned to listen more closely, and he learned that he could count on me. At this stage, I wasn’t in a hurry to introduce the halter. I wanted the trust underneath it first. The halter should never create the connection. It should simply become part of a connection that is already there. It took me hundreds of Mustangs to truly understand how powerful that feels. I didn’t always see horsemanship this way. The Mustangs taught me. No big breakthrough. No dramatic changing moment. Just moments like this…

A once-wild Mustang, completely free to leave, quietly saying, “I trust you.”
And maybe that’s the most beautiful part of all: he didn’t stay because I was holding him. He stayed because of what we had built together.

Coming from recovery and now working at FORGE, a recovery center, Makenzie spent a beautiful afternoon with us at the ranch and what happened next was something really special.

Makenzie was completely authentic. He opened his heart, slowed down, and simply was and the animals mirrored that energy 100%. You don’t see Kaddie like this very often.

There was no forcing the moment. No trying to make something happen.

Just trust. Presence. Connection.
