What would you do if you couldn't afford to feed the pet you love?

For many pet owners facing financial hardship, this can become a very real and painful question.

At Lawrence Humane, we believe that no one should have to choose between paying the rent, keeping the lights on, buying groceries, or feeding their beloved pets. Most of all, we never want someone to feel like they have to surrender the companion they dearly love simply because they're struggling to afford the cost of pet food.

That's why our Pet Food Pantry assists loving pet owners who need a little help accessing pet food. And right now, your gift can help twice as much!

In honor of Lawrence Humane's 75th anniversary, our friend, Margene, is offering a $7,500 matching gift in memory of her beloved Toto, whom she adopted from Lawrence Humane. Margene knows firsthand how important the human-animal bond is as Toto was her beloved companion for over 16 years. Now, in memory of Toto, Margene wants to help other families hold onto that special bond.

If you donate by September 16th, your gift will be DOUBLED, up to $7,500!

This means $25 becomes $50.

This year, for the first time ever, we made Clear the Shelter a three-day event. And let us tell ya, the weekend did not disappoint as 195 animals were adopted from Friday to Sunday!

Thank you so much to everyone who adopted during Clear the Shelter 2026! We are so excited for the love and good times that you and your new fuzzy family members are going to share!

And we are so grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible – the incredible Lawrence Humane volunteers, fosters, staff, board, supporters, and sponsors! It takes hundreds and hundreds of hands to make something like this possible and there’s no way that 195 animals could have found loving homes without you. We never lose sight of how lucky we are to be part of this community and thank you profusely for helping us save so many lives!

If you've ever loved a pet, you know they're so much more than "just a pet" - they're family. Our friend, Margene, knows that feeling well. Years ago, she adopted Toto from Lawrence Humane, and for 16½ years, he was her beloved companion. Toto also became a certified therapy dog, bringing comfort, laughter and companionship to people throughout our community!

After losing Toto, Margene wanted to honor the special bond they shared by helping other people keep their beloved pets by their side. Who will be the lucky human to adopt Graycie?! This sweet lady has been patiently waiting for a loving home to call her own - maybe it's you!

Here's what Graycie's foster has had to say about their time together: "She is a “tree dweller” and is so happy hanging out on shelves and ledges and platforms, observing her domain from high. Extra points if the ledge happens to be next to a window. And the jackpot if that window overlooks a world of squirrels, bird feeders, and blowing leaves! She loves gentle attention and being petted (just not on her lower back end and tail though). She has the gentlest, most soothing purr to let you know how much she adores being adored. She is content to while away her daytime hours relaxing and listening to music or being read to. She goes to town when the sun goes down, though, and that’s when she plays with lots of toys. Her favorites? Lop-sided balls (never go in a predictable direction!) and cotton balls! And her all-time favorites to share with humans: Cat Dancer and DaBird. Graycie is just a laid back, lovely girl who is just so appreciative of a quiet home where she can feel safe and experience life at her own pace without too many demands. She is very special!"

Graycie can get overstimulated when getting pets, so she needs someone who is cat savvy and can read her body language (or someone that's willing to learn!). She does not enjoy the company of other cats and would prefer to be the only cat in the home. While her fosters have two cats and Graycie has been able to live with them, that's because the resident cats are so geriatric that they ignore her and Graycie is able to do her own thing. She has been successfully living with her fosters' two dogs and "tolerates [them] fairly well." Graycie is more comfortable with the older, sedentary dog, but the younger, more active one makes her nervous. Graycie has been trained to get into her carrier and doesn't mind car rides. Her foster calls her, "a darn good cat!" and we have to agree!

This year, for the first time ever, we made Clear the Shelter a three-day event. And let us tell ya, Day 3 did not disappoint as 45 more animals got to go to loving homes today! 🥳🥰

So for those of you keeping count, here are our official Clear the Shelter stats:

Day 1: 54 adoptions (8 dogs and 46 cats)

Day 2: 89 adoptions (39 dogs and 50 cats)

Day 3: 45 adoptions (16 dogs and 29 cats)

Plus don't forget - we waived the adoption fees in advance of Clear the Shelter for certain animals who wouldn't do well at a hustling and bustling adoption event. And because of that, an additional 5 dogs and 2 cats got adopted as well! Which brings our grand total to...🥁🥁🥁

With two days of the Lawrence Humane Society’s Clear the Shelter event down, 150 animals have found loving homes. Folks still have from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday to meet their new best friend for free.

Clear the Shelter continues TODAY from noon to 6pm and just look at all these incredible animals who are looking for a loving home to call their own! So far...an amazing 143 animals have been adopted on Friday and Saturday. How many more will find themselves a loving family today?!
