🧡 We are so excited to announce these new shirts! 🧡

We've been talking with our pals at Lawrence Humane Society for a long time about a shirt collab- and with LHS celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, it's the perfect time!

Introducing...the iconic "Hangin' With Hootie" shirts!! These salmon-colored Comfort Color pocket tees feature a very popular Lawrence Humane alum named Hootie hangin' at the beach with a Shark Attack in hand! Plus, a bonus "pocket pitty" dressed in a shark costume on the pocket.

Hootie was a beloved mastiff who loved attending The Sandbar to watch Chiefs games, walk around on KU campus, and help out Lawrence Humane staff with tabling events! Hootie found himself at the shelter in 2022 after his loving owner passed away. Elina, the chief development officer at LHS, immediately fell in love with his big ol' googly eyes and gentle personality. She and her husband took very good care of him and eventually ended up adopting him! It is in his honor we celebrate two of life’s greatest things: giant dogs and local bars that welcome them with open arms!

All proceeds support the animals at Lawrence Humane Society.

Get yours today at The Sandbar, or you can get them from Lawrence Humane Society's retail shop at the shelter or their online store: https://lawrencehumane.org/shop

🎶It's been a long time comin'....🎶

We've been chattin' with our pals at The Sandbar about doing a shirt collab for awhile now, and what better time than during our 75th anniversary, where we are focusing on all things COMMUNITY! 😍

Introducing...the iconic "Hangin' With Hootie" shirts!! These salmon-colored Comfort Color pocket tees feature a very popular Lawrence Humane alum named Hootie, hangin' at the beach with a Shark Attack in hand! Plus, a bonus "pocket pitty" dressed in a shark costume on the pocket.

Hootie was a beloved 200 lb mastiff who loved attending The Sandbar to watch Chiefs games, walk around KU campus, and help out Lawrence Humane staff with tabling events! Every time Hootie watched the Chiefs at The Sandbar, the Chiefs won. Hootie got to be part of two Super Bowls! 🏆🏆

Hootie found himself at the shelter around the holidays in 2021 after his loving owner passed away. Our Chief Development Officer, Elina, immediately fell in love with his big ol' googly eyes and gentle personality. She and her husband took very good care of him and eventually adopted him! It is in his honor we celebrate two of life’s greatest things: giant dogs and local bars that welcome them with open arms!

Get yours today online, in-person at Lawrence Humane, or at The Sandbar! Check out all our awesome retail items for humans at lawrencehumane.org/shop 😎

We are so grateful to everyone who reached out regarding Ash! We're happy to say that he is leaving for foster care tomorrow and has some great potential adopters in the works. Thank you so much to everyone who shared our post and advocated for Ash!

However, while Ash's story has a positive path forward, we still have so many dogs at the shelter who are in similar positions as Ash and they need us to step up for them as well! We had a number of folks say that their barrier to fostering or adoption Ash was either a) he's too large; b) we don't know how he is with cats; or c) he needs to be the only dog in the home. So we'd like to highlight some dogs who are smaller than Ash, are known to do well with cats, and are dog friendly!

Scout, Jasper, and Moilie are all just smaller versions of Ash! (They range between 50-70 lbs.) All three of these dogs LOVE humans, are house-trained, and are non-destructive when left out in the home. They are the perfect combination of snuggly and playful, walk well on a leash, and enjoy car rides. They are totally fine seeing dogs when out and about, but just like Ash, they need to be the only dogs in a home. All three have been with us for months and months, and we are desperate to get them into foster or adoptive homes as well!

For the folks who have cats and no other dogs - Nellie and Chevy are the dogs for you! These dogs are on the younger side, both approximately 2 years old. They both came from homes where there weren't any other dogs, so they are pretty nervous with dogs. But we know from their previous owners that Nellie and Chevy have both lived with cats and did really well - no chasing or fighting with the cats. Plus, they are both kennel trained, non-destructive, and know basic commands!

And for the folks who already have dogs and so weren't a fit for Ash, let us introduce you to Love, Phineas, and Houston! Love and Houston are both 2 years old and Phineas is 6 years old. These goofballs enjoy both humans AND other dogs! They attend doggy playgroups at the shelter and we'd love to introduce them to your resident dogs! Whether you're interested in adopting or fostering them, if you have other dogs, you must meet these three pups!

Our adoption special goes until the end of May! So ALL dogs' adoption fees are only $25 until 6pm on Sunday! You can check out all of our adoptable animals at http://lawrencehumane.org/adopt or come in any day, 12pm to 6pm. And if you're interested in a specific dog, you're welcome to email [email protected] or call 785-843-6835.

And if you're interested in fostering one of these dogs or any of the other dogs we have at the shelter, please email [email protected]. We provide you with everything you possibly need and would love to match you up with a dog that's a good fit for your household!

Just as you shared Ash's post, will you please share this post as well? Every single dog featured here - and the many who aren't featured - are just as deserving as Ash! Thank you for caring and for helping us save as many lives as possible! ❤️

Kitten season may have started late, but the floodgates sure have opened! 🐱☔️ In just the month of May so far, we've taken in 141 neonatal and underage kittens - and the month isn't even over! 🙀

With kitten season in full swing, we now have LOTS of tiny mouths to bottle feed. So we are so grateful to our incredible partners, Orphan Kitten Club and Kitten Lady, for providing the kitten formula that we very much need through their Forever Formula Fund! Thanks to their support, our shelter staff and amazing fosters have what they need to help our kittens grow big and strong, so they can ultimately all find loving homes! 🍼💕🩷

‼️ We urgently need a foster or adopter for Ash! ‼️

Friends, you know we would never say something is urgent when it's not, so please believe us when we say Ash really and truly is urgently in need of a foster home or adopter. Ash is the BEST boy, a true gentle giant, and it's simply not fair that he's suffering the way he is right now.

Ash is a 5 year old Lab/Pyrenees mix who ended up in our shelter through no fault of his own. His people loved him very much, but had to surrender him due to some health complications in the family. His list of excellent qualities could go on forever, but here's just a sampling:

🌟 He is potty trained and doesn't need to be crated when left alone in the house because he is non-destructive.
🌟 He is a very smart boy and knows the commands, "sit, down, come, stay, and shake."
🌟 He is a big fan of snuggling, but is very mindful of his size. He slept on the corner of his former owner's bed and is just happy being next to you.
🌟 He is a Mass Street Mutts superstar and has been described as, "calm, sweet, friendly, personable, loving, shy, and a gentle giant."
🌟 He walks well on a leash, enjoys car rides, and is a fantastic dog to take on outings. He loves a good patio lunch or happy hour, pup cups, and the treats at Lucky Dog!

Unfortunately, Ash has been stuck at the shelter for nearly two months and his quality of life is significantly and drastically declining. He hates being kenneled and is experiencing major distress being at the shelter. Despite our best efforts, Ash's level of anxiety and stress only grows with each passing day - he can't settle and he's losing weight rapidly. In just the 7 weeks he's been here, Ash has lost over 20 lbs, simply due to stress. This is neither sustainable nor the life we want for any dog.

We are desperate to find Ash a foster home or an adopter! We don't have any information on how he is with cats, but we do know that he is great with kids. And while Ash is totally fine seeing other dogs out and about, because of everything he's been through, he needs to be the only dog in the home. Ash is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, and his adoption fee is sponsored!

It's extra challenging to find fosters and adopters for dogs who need to be the only dog in the home - most people who love dogs already have dogs. But Ash deserves our best effort to find a safe space where he can exhale, decompress, and begin to enjoy life again. So we are asking you - our community - to please step up for Ash!

If you think that you could foster Ash, please email [email protected]. If you're interested in adopting Ash, please email [email protected], call us at 785-843-6835, or come to the shelter any day, 12-6pm. And if you're not able to foster or adopt him, please share this post! Share it far and wide with everyone you know - maybe Ash's person is someone in your network.

Thank you for caring about Ash! And thank you for supporting us, your local animal shelter! ❤️

Not in a place to adopt right now, but still want to make a difference in a shelter animal's life?! We'd love to have you foster with us!! Summer is always a time when many of our college-age fosters return back home and it also coincides with the busiest time for shelters across the nation.

If you have never fostered before, there is nothing like taking a stressed-out pup from the shelter and watching them decompress and transform in your home with a little love and patience! YOU can make a HUGE difference for the dog you foster and ease our shelter worker hearts here at the shelter!

Even just one week out of the shelter can do wonders for a dog and provide a bit of relief. Please consider opening your heart and home to a shelter pet this summer. There's no better time than now and our foster coordinator can't wait to find you a great match for your home!
