This dog has ichthyosis. Before I had my canine esthetician training, I would've turned this dog away. Or possibly injured her not realizing what was underneath her matting. Today? She received a full debridement treatment and left feeling like a million bucks.
We started with a deep soak in magnesium sulfate and sodium bicarbonate to soften the scales. Followed with a volcanic mineral mud bath to exfoliate at the cellular level, then a medicated chlorhexidine (antiseptic) shampoo soak. Ichthyosis often has yeast infections as side effects to the scaling and weakened immune system.
Last a protein conditioner then a leave in hot oil treatment. Ideally you rinse the hot oil treatment off but this isn't a regular case, and her skin absorbs the oils that would make other dogs feel greasy.
After a towel & fan dry and very gentle brushing with finesse to avoid damaging her skin, I spot shaved sensitive areas like the throat and belly and did a 1 inch guard comb all over.
I spent hours with her today and look forward to seeing her again soon. Hopefully intensive treatment will give her relief now that she's got someone who knows how to treat and soothe.
