Juneau Animal Rescue Promoting animal welfare by educating, protecting & sheltering stray, abandoned, & surrendered pets.

Our animal shelter began as a small shed under the bridge over Gastineau Channel. While we will always be proud of those humble beginnings, our new name and logo more accurately convey the community spirit of the organization that has served Juneau’s animal population since 1963. In January 2019 we changed our name to Juneau Animal Rescue, hoping to strengthen awareness of our organization and expand our public outreach. We are continually grateful for the generous support of the community and look forward to the next 50 plus years of service as Juneau Animal Rescue.

Classic husky behavior... :)

This lovely pup (looks like maybe an Alaskan Husky or mix?) had taken itself on a lovely walk, when it began following some passers by near Duck Creek market, following them all the way to a nearby park before they decided it'd be a good idea to bring it to JAR to try to reunite it with its owner.

We're sure someone is missing their dog, give us a ring at 789-6997!

JAR staff’s hearts break for Tuesday! 💔

Tuesday is a 12-year-old tortoiseshell cat that has had trouble adjusting to her temporary shelter life! Tuesday and her housemate, Norman, came to JAR after their owner’s new baby developed allergies to the cats. Both cats are incredibly sweet and social, so the family felt it was best to rehome them rather than stress about keeping their distance. 😔

The start of their shelter life was rough. We were low on space; there were cats everywhere, Norman kept escaping his kennel, and Tuesday hardly showed her face. The two finally went up for adoption, but the decision to separate them was made. Norman became stressed in his kennel, so we gave him the chance to live his shelter life in a communal room. We were told Tuesday might not like cats other than Norman, but because she had been declawed, we couldn't give her that chance.😢

When Tuesday was brought into the meet-and-greet for the first time, she yowled down the hallway and urinated on one of our kennel staff. She hid from visitors and needed a lot of consoling to calm down. It gets better with every trip, but our hearts break with every broken meow.

Declawing cats can change their entire lifestyle and personality. A cat without claws can become insecure in their abilities to get around, express their scratching habits, and even protect themselves if needed. Declawed cats are less likely to use the litter box, climb onto furniture, and socialize with strangers. They’re more likely to bite when overstimulated because they lose the ability to communicate through their paws, and they can develop arthritis at a young age. We want potential adopters to know that adopting a declawed cat is not a “bonus,” but a commitment to making their life more comfortable. ❤️‍🩹

Tuesday is an older cat looking for a quiet and easy-to-navigate place to call home. We suggest a home without other pets to help her transition more smoothly, but folks with more relaxed or older pets are still welcome to meet her! Because Tuesday is 12, she qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors program and can have her adoption fee waived!🙌

Cats left behind after their owners passed away are now looking for a second chance at life. ❤️‍🩹

Meet four cats who came to JAR scared and unsure of what was happening. Animal Control worked hard to trap these indoor/outdoor cats and keep them safe while they waited for a next of kin to pick them up, but unfortunately, nobody was available to take them in.

Hinge is a curious but shy girl who would love to say hi, but isn't quite sure how! You can tell her from her sister, Tinder, by the orange spot on her nose!

💝Tinder ~10-months-old | Lynx Point💝
Tinder is the most reserved out of the entire group. She prefers to keep her distance until she knows she's safe, but Tinder is gentle and sweet overall.

🐝Bumble ~10-months-old | Flame Point🐝
Bumble is our only male in this group! He may take a few visits to open up to you, but he's a very sweet cat and loves to be petted.

Can you help JAR get some cutie-patooties out of the shelter today? ✨

We have several adolescent cats that are taking up a lot of communal room space, and we'd love to give our older cats a chance to stretch their legs without closing the dog meet-and-greet! 😅

Visitations are always walk-in friendly, free, and super fun, even if you're just stopping by to say hello! Bring your friends, convince them that they need to fill that cat-shaped void in their life, and help us help them! 🙌

Visitation is from 1 PM to 5 PM! 🐾

Meet JAR's #1 aura-farmer, Rizz!✨

Rizz is a 10-month-old Alaskan Husky who is now in his "Shelter-Era" after he didn't vibe well with his previous family. 😅

He was a blast! Rizz loved being playful and going on outdoor adventures, but he also loved getting a little mischievous. When Rizz would His owners worked on a week-on/week-off schedule, so training him was hard, and Rizz spent a lot of time kenneled at home. 😔

He's giving whimsy! Rizz gets along well with kids and other dogs, listens to clear authority figures, and is always ready for a treat 😋! He can lowkey get a little destructive with objects when his day feels rather mid, so he's looking for a family that loves getting out and getting active! ☀️

If you're looking for a GOAT'ed dog ready for his next glow-up and with minimal red flags, then please consider meeting Rizz! 🙌

Meet JAR's newest sweetheart, Grey! 💕

Grey is a 3-year-old Alaskan Husky, finally ready to begin her adoption journey!

Grey came to JAR about a week and a half ago after her owner couldn't bring her along for the move. Grey was well-trained and was loved dearly. She knows several tricks associated with hand movements, and she was even taught how to hug! 🥹❤️‍🩹

She can be pretty shy when meeting new people, but we found that squeeze cheese creates a shortcut to her heart ✨! We suggest meeting Grey in our meet-and-greet before going for any walks (which she does amazingly on a gentle leader).

This girl was finally spayed and became up to date on her vaccines. She'll be available to meet after our vaccine clinic ends at 1:30 PM!🐾

Biscuit is a 7-year-old brown tabby that is looking for a stress-free home! 🐱

Biscuit was brought in after he had a urinary blockage for nearly a week and nearly lost his life! His owners were very heartbroken, but wanted to make sure Biscuit got the best care possible regarding his urinary concerns. ❤️‍🩹

Biscuit was in and out of Summit for his first week at JAR. He continued to block and worried a lot of our staff, but Biscuit stayed strong, pulled through, and now he’s finally ready to start his adoption journey! 🙌

Urinary blockages can be caused by many things, but stress is a major risk factor. Because Biscuit will need to stay on his prescription diet, some amazing folks donated a few bags of his food so his new family will feel more prepared! His new family should help him get established with a vet, so if any concerns arise, his vets will know exactly how to help. 👍

Kenneling at JAR is hard on our cats, so we're looking for a home for Biscuit where he can finally feel stress-free and loved! Biscuit is chatty and loving, and he’s lived with other cats! He’s a handsome boy, and someone very lucky will take him home. 🥰

This incredibly sweet boy was found running around the UHaul area in Lemon Creek for at least an hour yesterday, and was eventually picked up and brought to JAR by some kind passers by. If this is your dog, or if you know whose dog this is, please give us a call at 789-6997. ❤️‍🩹

We are concerned about the condition of the skin on his legs and in a few other places, and whether or not we can locate an owner, we will make sure he is receiving the appropriate veterinary care. (We don't want to assume he's not getting that already, animal health is complex and sometimes animals look rough even when they are receiving appropriate veterinary care -- we just want to make sure).

Is anyone missing this cat?

This black and white cat was brought into JAR recently: a well meaning middle schooler found it and brought it inside, and had been taking care of it for 'several weeks'. Thankfully, a family member realized that the cat might be missed and brought it to JAR, and we can now investigate whether it has an owner. We got a voicemail yesterday from someone who said they were missing a black cat with a white diamond on its forehead, but we may have transcribed the phone number incorrectly when taking notes from the call, as we can't get hold of the caller. If you think this may be your cat, or you know someone whose cat this might be, please call Animal Control at 789-6997.

As a gentle reminder: We all like to talk about the 'cat distribution system', but actually, taking ownership of a cat found outdoors is against the law. While we support folks keeping their cats as indoor cats whenever they are willing to, cats are legally allowed to roam outdoors, and domestic animals are considered private property in the state of Alaska, so if you end up taking someone else's cat, that is theft. If you take a roaming outdoor cat or dog into your care, you MUST legally contact Animal Control and hand off the animal to Animal Control within 24 hours so that we may attempt to reunite the animal with its owner. (Please don't take roaming cats into your care, though!! And don't feed them!! They are more likely to be reunited with their original owner if they are NOT brought to the shelter and NOT fed by other parties, and we have to keep space open here for sick or injured animals and owners who have to relinquish their pets.) 🐱 If you are concerned about an outdoor cat, you can always call us to talk through what to do.
