Part 3: “But he doesn’t do it every time.”
And honestly? That’s often a really good sign.
One of the more confusing parts of reactivity is that the behavior may only happen in certain situations, with certain dogs, or in certain environments.
Your dog may walk past one dog calmly and react strongly to the next.
That inconsistency can make people think, “See? He’s just excited.” But reactivity does not have to happen 100% of the time to still be reactivity.
Catching these patterns early before the behavior becomes more intense, more frequent, or more generalized gives us a much better chance of improving it successfully.

Part 2: “He just wants to say hi.”
One of the reasons we don’t typically label leash barking and lunging as “attention-seeking” is because we have to look at what the “consequences” of the behavior.
Most of the time, the other dog keeps walking or your dog keeps walking past. �
The behavior usually does not result in social interaction or access to the other dog.
What it does often accomplish is creating distance.

That’s why understanding the function of the behavior matters so much.
Correctly identifying behavior isn’t about labeling dogs as “bad.” It’s about understanding what they’re experiencing so we can help them more effectively.

Progress Update for Lily 🌸
Lily has reached the end of her behavioral wellness program. As a recap, Lily joined our program to address her extreme fear and avoidance behaviors, which were worsening day by day. This sweet girl was increasingly finding it harder to enjoy everyday puppy activities, including walks. After 5 weeks of structured behavior modification exercises while living with Dr. Savage, she is well on her way to enjoying the good life, just like a puppy should! She is ready to go home, explore Houston, and continue her progress with her family. Way to go, Lily!

Introducing the smallest member of our November Behavioral Wellness Retreat: 🐾 Kane! 🐾

At just six months old, this handsome pup is joining us to build a solid foundation in obedience and manners. We’ll be working closely with Kane on managing his separation anxiety, refining his play style, and implementing preventative reactivity exercises to ensure a smooth, happy transition to his forever family!

Our Behavioral Wellness programs are designed to be proactive, not just reactive—perfect for tackling current concerns and setting puppies like Kane up for a lifetime of confidence and good behavior! ❤️

Hello, Lily! 👋 Meet the newest and largest member of our November Behavioral Wellness Retreat: a sweet but anxious Great Dane puppy joining us in Sarasota!

Like many anxious puppies, Lily is also showing early signs of reactivity. This is common, as fear and anxiety often lead to reactive behaviors as puppies get older.

Under Dr. Savage’s guidance, our primary focus will be to build her confidence and address her emerging reactivity. Since Lily is already a big girl, we’ll also focus on basic manners, especially addressing jumping!
She’s another Houston pup, joining Rafa, who is also attending the November retreat. We look forward to helping this sweet girl gain confidence for the future.

! 👋 This handsome 3-year-old Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo for short) has arrived in Sarasota from the Galveston/Houston area to join our November Behavioral Wellness Retreat.

Over the next four weeks, under the expert guidance of Dr. Savage, Rafa will focus on various behaviors, with the primary goal of improving his touch sensitivity. For a hairless breed like the Xolo, safe and comfortable handling of his entire body is crucial, especially as winter approaches!

We are so proud to be the nation’s only dog behavioral wellness retreat program where dogs live right in the home of a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) for expert puppy development or behavioral treatment. CAABs, alongside Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorists, represent the highest level of expertise in dog behavior.

Meet Helix, our Houston Dog of the Month! Helix was exhibiting severe reactivity towards people. His owner had previously enrolled him in various training programs but they were unsuccessful in modifying his reactive behavior.

Helix is now much more comfortable with greeting new people thanks to his personalized guest routine and behavior modification training. He no longer barks and lunges at people and is much more comfortable receiving pets and treats from new friends without being afraid.

Treating dog reactivity is what we do best at Beyond the Dog. Over the past 20+ years, we have treated thousands of reactive dogs and can personalize our unique reactivity treatment to fit the specific needs of any dog.

We have virtual training programs available worldwide and in-home training programs in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City.
