It’s not all about looks…

One of the most important things you can do before deciding on a breed is to research what the breed is bred for to see if their needs and behaviors align with your lifestyle!

If they don’t, it may be best to find a breed that does because unmet needs can bring about an abundance of unwanted behaviors: countersurfing, chewing, reactivity and more!

Libby here is a Portuguese Water Dog.
These dogs were bred for:
•Herding fish
•Retrieving lost or broken gear for fisherman
•Swimming messages between ships or to shore

These dogs may not “shed” much, but they require a high amount of exercise and mental stimulation to meet their needs.

Researching breed traits should matter more than aesthetics.

Genetics don’t disappear just because you wanted a trendy, non-shedding dog.

It’s not just about how you raise them…

Some dogs are naturally more social, resilient, confident, sensitive, reactive, or environmentally aware because of what they were bred for and inherited genetically.

You can absolutely support, shape, and improve behavior, but pretending every dog starts as a blank slate sets owners and dogs up for guilt and unrealistic expectations.

It is so important to look at the breed of dog, what they’re bred for and if that fits with your lifestyle!

Good training works with the dog in front of you, not against their genetics 🧬

Stop being reactive and start being proactive

Here’s why 👇

The more times a behavior is rehearsed, the stronger it becomes. That means your puppy still jumping first and then hearing “off” and then getting all 4 on the floor is the behavior pattern strengthening. Yes, that means jumping is getting stronger.

Instead, start capturing and reinforcing the behaviors you do want throughout the day such as sitting to ask for pets or all 4 on the floor as soon as you get your puppy! We want to REWARD and REINFORCE these behaviors!

The more times your puppy learns they get pets, a toy, a treat, etc. when they’re sitting or all 4 on the floor, the more times they will offer it!

This is the easiest way to teach a “drop it” without force…

The “Switch” game teaches your dog that giving up one toy leads to more fun!

Here’s what you’re going to do:
1️⃣ Start by playing with one toy.
2️⃣ After a little bit, with your other hand you’ll start to make the second toy exciting by moving it around and engaging your dog with it.
3️⃣ The moment your dog drops the first toy to go to the second, mark (“yes”) and continue the game (2nd toy is your dog’s reward here).
4️⃣ You’ll continue to repeat this game helping to encourage a reliable “drop”
