Sheep are very smart, sneaky, strong and stubborn. And they are calm and loving. Just like dogs. Goldie and Tilly are such love bugs. I love how complex their personalities are.

Newmie’s vet bill is $2,139.61. We are waiting to see what the steroids and antibiotics do for him, and exploring the treatments for laryngeal paralysis (often a surgery that ties back one side of the larynx) before making our next move.

Newman Update!

Newman had radiographs and an endoscopy. The radiographs showed a mass, and thankfully the mass is not inside his esophagus or pressing on his esophagus.

The endoscopy found ulcers and small polyps in his esophagus. He had a course of gastrointestinal protectants to take care of it. His epiglottis was severely inflamed and restricted, and there were also changes noted in his proximal trachea, which is the beginning of his airway.

The vet is now looking more closely at what could be happening with Newman’s airway. One possibility they’re exploring is laryngeal paralysis.

The larynx is the “voice box” at the top of the windpipe. When Newman breathes, the larynx needs to open so air can pass into the trachea and lungs. With laryngeal paralysis, the structures that control that opening don’t work properly, so the airway can become partially obstructed. This could make it difficult for Newman to breathe while eating, and it could also affect his ability to swallow normally.

We have lots of updates and this will bring you up to speed.

RUDY got a very functional haircut this spring. Because his legs, especially his back legs, are so sensitive, Rae spent hours over several days carefully clipping all of the hair from his legs. Unfortunately, removing all that hair exposed some skin issues that had been hiding underneath. Rudy is now getting treatments on his legs twice a day, and we’re doing everything we can to keep him comfortable and happy.

ELLIE is settling in beautifully and integrating nicely with Deanie and Emerald. She’s inquisitive, curious, likes being held, and is a total pip! She was concerned and kept a close eye on the vet when Emerald was getting a beak trim. Emerald’s beak was getting long, and she was starting to eat with her head sideways, which can limit the amount of food she gets. We’re so happy that this sweet girl is here at FBR, and especially happy to see things working out so well between the three of them.

The KUNE KUNES & POTBELLIES are continuing to work out their hierarchy and figure out the piggy social order. For the most part, it’s every pig for themselves…with one very important exception: Mabel is always looking out for her brother. She continues to defend him and keep an eye on him, proving that she is one very sweet older sister.

And then there’s NEWMAN…

Newman is currently at the vet under anesthesia for an endoscopy to try to determine why he continues to have trouble eating and why food is coming out of his nose.

He was previously diagnosed with a small airway in his pharynx, but we’re getting a second opinion to better understand what’s happening and, hopefully, figure out how to help him. While he’s under anesthesia, he’s also having dental work and a hoof trim.

We should know more once we have the results and more information from the vet. We will share an update as soon as we can.

This behavior is called “tidbitting.” A rooster will pick up something yummy he wants show off and share with the ladies as a courting gesture. He wants to show a hen he is a good provider and protector. Unfortunately, Reggie isn’t allowed to court the ladies because he is too rough with them. But he does spend a lot of time talking to them and showing off through the fence.
