Speak for the Unspoken

Speak for the Unspoken We save special needs dogs and give them their best lives. SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue located in the Columbus, Ohio area.

We're a 501(c)(3) foster based pet rescue located in the central Ohio area, but with fosters over a 5 state area including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We are a foster based rescue, devoted to both animal rescue and education. We focus our rescue efforts on special needs animals, most often those with hearing and vision impairments. Most of the animals we save are double mer

le Australian Shepherds born with vision and/or hearing deficits due to inappropriate merle to merle breeding practices. We believe special needs dogs are capable of living happy and healthy lives, and we work to educate the public about these amazing animals. Our Mission statement is “Special needs, good deeds. We see possibilities, not disabilities.” Our mission reflects the fact that we also will assist any animal in need whether it be an exceptionally difficult medical case---like cataract surgery to return vision to an otherwise normal Aussie, or a litter of puppies at risk of parvo in a shelter environment. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.

Meet Aquarius! Your brilliant, big-hearted adventure buddy.

If you’re looking for a smart, playful, loyal companion who can keep up with your energy and your couch cuddles… Aquarius may be your girl.

Aquarius is a 5-year-old Catahoula Leopard mix weighing 85 pounds of love and personality. She’s crate trained, potty trained, and already knows an impressive list of commands. This girl is incredibly intelligent and thrives when she has something to learn or do. Training sessions? She’s in. Puzzle toys? Absolutely. A treat-filled Kong? Say no more.

She loves to run, play, and stretch her legs, so a home with a tall, secure fenced yard is a must. After she’s had her fun, Aquarius is more than happy to curl up beside you for hours of well-earned snuggles and belly rubs.

Aquarius grew up as the only dog in her home with three young human siblings, so she’s used to being the center of attention. Because of that, she can be a little protective of her toys and would likely do best as the only dog in the home. She loves people deeply and bonds closely with her family.

Her foster mom shares that Aquarius experiences some anxiety in new situations, and she takes a daily medication that helps her feel her best. She’s looking for a patient, understanding adopter who will continue building her confidence and celebrating her progress. With consistency and love, she truly shines.

And here’s a bonus: Aquarius knows exactly when it’s mealtime. She’ll even bring you her bowl as a gentle reminder. Your very own furry personal assistant!

Aquarius isn’t just looking for a home.. she’s looking for her person. Someone who will appreciate her intelligence, her playful spirit, and her big, devoted heart.

Could that be you?

She is being fostered in Grove City, Ohio. She is spayed, UTD on all vaccines and prevention. Please complete an adoption application at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Mickey!

She is a gentle and sweet 12-year-old female Wheaten Terrier weighing in at a petite 31 pounds. She’s a calm, quiet (no barking), lovely senior lady who is ready to find a forever home and enjoy her golden years. She is great in her crate and keeps it clean. And there are no accidents overnight. She does not yet ask to go outside so she needs a schedule of going out before and after meals, cage time and bedtime.

Mickey longs for a home where she can nap and keep up with what’s going on in the household. She has wonderful manners and does not bark or jump. She starts off a bit shy and reserved, but once she feels safe, her soft, affectionate personality shines. She absolutely loves:

✨ A cozy spot to nap…next to her human on the sofa is a bonus!
✨ Gentle cuddles and ear scratches
✨ Hearing she’s a very good girl
✨ Treats (of course!)
✨ Strolling or sniffing around outside or following her humans around the house.

Mickey is the perfect companion if you’re looking for a quiet, loving dog who appreciates simple joys and lots of kindness. She’s ready to blossom with a patient adopter who will give her comfort, reassurance, and a warm home.

Help this sweet senior girl find the soft landing she deserves. 💛

Mickey is fostered in Columbus, Ohio. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines and flea, tick and heartworm prevention. If you want to meet her please submit an application at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Presley!

She is a 10-11 month old Pitbull mix weighing 38 pounds. She was originally brought into animal control when a good Samaritan found her. Unfortunately she was terrified while running loose and was hit by a car resulting in a broken pelvis. She has fully healed and is now able to work up to normal activity! She'd likely benefit from some joint supplements to help prevent the likely arthritis that may occur after this injury. She's not quite able to stretch that leg out as well as the other, but it does NOT slow her down. She wants to run/jump and play like any other puppy. However, she is not super energetic and would do fine with regular walks. No long runs needed.

She's a sweet "pocket pitty" that loves her person. She's currently being fostered in family with a 2 year old child, 2 female dogs (1 small and one large) and 2 cats. She does well with the child and the dogs. She likes to chase and play with the cats, she has shown no aggression towards them. However, she could easily stress out cats that are not very dog friendly. She still needs some work on socialization and can be slow to warm up, but she is huge cuddler once she becomes attached. She is currently attached to the mom in the house, but does well with everyone. She would love someone that is home often or even able to take her to work. She will be your shadow!

She will bark when she sees or hears people approaching the house, but she is excited/nervous when they enter. She is still working on house breaking, but is only improving. She will also use a p*e pad if one is offered.

Presley is being fostered in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is spayed and up to date with her core vaccines. Please apply to meet her at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Today, this tiny puppy is undergoing life-saving heart surgery.

At just 7 weeks old, Fidough was discarded by a puppy mill after being diagnosed with a heart murmur. When Speak! stepped in, we learned he has PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus), a congenital heart defect that can lead to heart failure without surgery.

The procedure he's receiving today typically costs $4,000–$6,000 and carries extra risk because he's so young and small.

The bright spot in his story? During his journey to surgery, Fidough found his forever family and has a home waiting for him when he recovers.

Sadly, puppies with expensive medical needs are often discarded instead of treated. Without rescue, many never get the chance they deserve.

If you'd like to help cover the cost of his surgery and support future dogs like him, please consider making a donation today.

Meet Kady!

At 12 years young, Kady is a female Wheaten Terrier with a heart full of love and a smile that never fades. Weighing 30 pounds, she’s the perfect medium-sized companion and enjoys her time inside napping or outside exploring. She’s also a total lady at home — potty trained, crate trained and perfectly content to curl up on a soft chair or dog bed. Katy would do best in a quiet home.

Kady has some vision impairment but that doesn’t stop her from running around outside with her ball or doing anything else she wants to do. She loves playing with balls and squeaky or crinkly toys. Kady would like you to know that she is really not fond of visits to the vet or groomer but has been successful recently with a combo of meds before an appointment. She also doesn’t like to be picked up but will gladly follow you when attached to her leash.

This sweet senior girl deserves a cozy, safe home to spend her golden years surrounded by love and comfort. If you’ve been waiting for an older gal to make your home feel warmer, Kady might just be your perfect match.

Kady is being fostered in Columbus, Ohio. She is spayed, up to date on vaccines, flea tick and heartworm prevention. If you want to meet her please submit an application at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt

Meet Paulding 🐾
📍Columbus, Ohio

This sweet ~7 year old Short Retriever mix was found on country roads in Northwest Ohio, unsure of humans. With patience (and a lot of gentle encouragement), he began to trust again and is now settled into his foster home in Columbus, OH. 💛 Paulding is potty trained, crate trained, and has a low energy, slow-and-steady vibe — his vet lovingly compared him to a sloth 🦥 He does well with calm, older or lower-energy dogs, but can get a bit grumpy if high-energy pups get too close. Because he startles easily, he’s best in a home with no young children (teens and up are perfect!) and a fenced-in yard is preferred so he can explore comfortably and safely.

Paulding has some special considerations: he has a degenerative vision condition and will eventually lose his sight. Right now he still has some minimal peripheral vision, and no medication is needed — just monitoring over time. He also has some mild joint discomfort, but is doing great on a daily joint supplement (and happily takes it with peanut butter each morning, of course 🥜). He now walks nicely with a harness, though he can be sneaky and is known to be an escape artist with collars/harnesses, so secure fittings and awareness are key. 😉

One of Paulding’s most endearing quirks is that he’s a little hoarder — toys, blankets, socks, an empty pop bottle that rolled by — if he loves it, he’ll collect it in his crate like treasure 🧦🧸💛 And recently, he has started showing affection by gently rubbing his bum against his foster’s leg every morning for some good butt scratches — the sweetest routine 🥹 He is also VERY food motivated and prefers to eat in his crate for comfort and space. With time, patience, and gentle love, Paulding has continued to blossom and trust more and more each day. 🌱💕

Paulding is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and prevention, and ready for a warm, loving home willing to give him the slow, steady, safe life he deserves. If you’re looking for a mellow companion who asks for very little but has a big heart, Paulding might be your guy. 💗🐶

Could you be the one to help him continue his journey? ✨

Meet Baloo! 🐾 Baloo is looking for a new foster or adopter!

He is a 1–2-year-old Great Pyrenees mix with a heart as big as his fluffy paws and a story that proves just how resilient dogs can be. Weighing around 50 lbs, Baloo has already overcome so much, from surviving life on the streets of Oklahoma to bravely fighting and beating parvo. Through it all, he’s remained sweet, trusting, and full of love. 🐾✨

Baloo is deaf, but don’t let that fool you. This boy is smart, capable, and eager to learn. He knows sit, no, potty, come, and lay down, and is currently working on stay with his foster family. Like many Great Pyrenees, he has a bit of a stubborn streak 😉, but with patience, consistency, and a confident leader, he truly shines.

This handsome guy is fully potty trained, walks nicely on a leash, and enjoys car rides 🚗. He’s not a fan of crates, but he does wonderfully in the home and loves being part of daily life. Baloo thrives outdoors, whether he’s playing, exploring, or simply lounging in the grass (or snow!) soaking up the sunshine 🌿☀️. And when it’s time to relax, expect gentle kisses and lots of affection.

Baloo gets along well with other large dogs 🐶 and would likely love having a playful canine companion, though it’s not required. He does best in a home without cats, and with kids ages 9–10 and up, who can respect his space and help him continue learning. A fenced yard is preferred so he can safely enjoy his favorite outdoor time.

Now thriving in his foster home with three other dogs, Baloo is ready for the next chapter of his life, a forever home filled with patience, love, and guidance. He’s looking for someone who sees past his challenges and recognizes the loyal, goofy, affectionate best friend waiting underneath all that white fluff! 🤍

Could that be you?

Baloo is available for adoption in Columbus, OH. Apply here or the link in our bio - www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Creed!

Creed is a 1.5 year old, 60 pound Dalmatian. He is up to date on vaccines, heartworm tested negative, and neutered. He is being fostered in Battle Creek, MI.

Creed is an incredibly sweet, loving dog who is looking for the perfect forever home. He has a very gentle personality and forms strong bonds with his people. Whether he’s curled up in bed with you at night or relaxing nearby on the floor, he simply loves being close to his family.

He is fully potty trained and does very well in the house. He is trustworthy when left out and does not get into things he shouldn’t. While he still has the playful side you’d expect from a young Dalmatian, he is actually pretty mellow for the breed. He enjoys running around and playing with other dogs, but he’s also happy to settle down and relax afterward.

He gets along well with other dogs and has also done well around cats. He loves to play fetch, chase other dogs, go for walks and hikes, and ride on boats. Because he doesn’t care for children running at him unexpectedly, he will require a home without children. He came from a home with children and was reported to have been very sweet with them but his foster feels best with placing him with adults only.

One area he will need continued work on is crate training. He does not do well in a crate right now and will need a patient adopter willing to continue working with him in a positive, understanding way. Alternatively, he could very likely be easily trained to stay out of his crate loose in the home. Aside from that, he is a truly wonderful companion with so much love to give.

He would do best with someone familiar with the Dalmatian breed or an active home that can provide regular exercise and companionship. In return, you’ll get an affectionate, loyal best friend who loves deeply and just wants to be part of the family.

If you’re looking for a sweet, loyal companion with a fun personality and a cuddly side, he may be the perfect fit for you! Apply to meet him at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾
