Brutal honesty

One of the things I hate most in the rabbit community is dishonesty for the sake of gaining followers.

So here are some things I think rabbit owners deserve to hear:

🐰 Rabbits p**p on your floor.
Spaying and neutering usually makes litter habits significantly better, but you’re probably still going to find a stray p**p from time to time. You aren’t doing anything wrong. Your rabbit isn’t broken. They’re rabbits.

🐰 Rabbits bite.
They are highly opinionated little beings with boundaries. Some rabbits will absolutely let you know when they don’t want you in their space. That doesn’t automatically make them aggressive or mean.

🐰 Rabbits chew your stuff.
Your rabbit probably isn’t chewing your carpet, baseboards or phone charger because they’re starving or because you failed to provide enough enrichment. Rabbits are natural foragers and chewers. When we bring them into our homes, those instincts don’t disappear. Sometimes your trim becomes part of the foraging experience.

🐰 Not every rabbit wants to be held.
You can love them, socialize them and handle them correctly, and some will still strongly prefer all four feet on the ground.

🐰 Not every rabbit wants a rabbit friend.
Rabbits are social animals, but they’re also territorial and selective. Bonding isn’t always easy, and occasionally two perfectly normal rabbits simply aren’t compatible.

🐰 Rabbits can be messy, destructive, stubborn and ridiculously dramatic.

And we need to be more honest about that.

Because when social media presents rabbit ownership as though every undesirable behavior can be eliminated with the right training, enclosure, enrichment or bonding technique, owners start believing normal rabbit behavior means they’re doing something wrong.

Education shouldn’t require us to make people feel inadequate first.
