Nervous dog? Build them a backyard confidence course 🐾

Nova's 5-step setup:
1. Hurdles
2. Tunnel
3. Walk the wall
4. Place
5. Nose work for small wins

Start easy so your dog wins a lot. Once it feels easy, make it a little harder each time. Confidence grows one small "I did it!" at a time.

Save this for your next backyard session, and follow for more Nova 🐶

Squirrels are busy, deer are out at dusk, and with shorter days a lot of our walks land right in that window. 🍂🐾

If your dog turns into a sled dog the second something moves in the brush, here's the fix: catch the moment before the pull. When the ears go up or the body stiffens, say your "look" cue once, turn and walk a few steps away at an angle, and reward the check-in. If your dog can't take a treat, you're too close, so just add distance.

Warm up with 10 quick reps of the cue before you head out, and if the leash goes tight toward wildlife, stop and wait for slack.

Your dog nails "sit" in the kitchen... then acts like they've never heard it once you hit the sidewalk? 🐾

That's not stubbornness. Dogs learn cues in the place they practiced them. At home it's quiet and familiar. Outside, your voice is up against squirrels, other dogs, and a hundred new smells.

One easy fix for this week: practice the cue in new spots, one step at a time. Start in the kitchen, then by the door, then the driveway, then a quiet street. If your dog struggles, go back a step. Bring better rewards outside (cheese, chicken, or a sniff break) and say the cue just once.

Short daily sessions beat long, frustrating ones.

Does your dog nail "sit" in the kitchen but act like they've never heard it on the sidewalk? It's not stubbornness. Dogs learn cues in a specific place, so you have to rebuild them step by step: home, then the yard, then the driveway, then a quiet street, and only after that the busier spots. Keep sessions short and bring treats that beat the squirrels.

High-drive and overstimulated aren't two different kinds of dog. Most of the time an overstimulated, anxious or reactive dog is a high-drive dog with no outlet. Give that drive a job and a lot of the chaos settles down. Here's how to spot it and what to do about it:

High drive is a dog’s built-in need to work. When it has no outlet, it spills into overstimulation—anxiety, reactivity, and trouble settling. Here’s how to tell the difference and what actually helps.

Reactive dog + Halloween doorbells = chaos if you wait until the night of.

Start with management: quiet the doorbell, barrier or safe room, teach place/station. Then desensitize the doorbell and practice costumes ahead of time with someone your dog already knows.

Day of: if they’re reactive, don’t greet trick-or-treaters. Safety over forced exposure.

Going out of town? A midday stretch walk should settle your dog — not wind them up for the crate.

Keep it 10–20 minutes: potty, sniff, light structure. Calm out → sniff → easy “with me” → calm sit at the door → settle before crate.

New tip: scatter part of their meal in safe grass mid-walk so they forage. Nose work tires the brain, the meal becomes enrichment, and they settle faster — no fancy toys.

Hot Fort Collins day? Shade and shorter is smarter.

Tired dog ≠ more miles.

Try focused yard hide-and-seek: 4–6 hides, about 8 minutes. Say “find it,” then stay quiet while they hunt. Novelty is the workout.

Hot Colorado day? Keep it in the shade.

Weeknight chaos often starts at one door.

Tonight’s 5-minute job: teach a door wait before dinner. Pick the door you actually fight over. Ask for a sit, crack it one inch, and if they surge, close it and reset. Build toward about 60 seconds of calm, then release with “okay” and dinner.

Stop while they’re winning. You don’t need a perfect minute on night one.

5 Minutes Before Dinner features a one-door impulse game that trains dogs to wait 60 seconds, reducing chaos and ensuring calm during meal prep.
