WHO ARE WE? 🦜
Spike’s Flying Home Parrot Sanctuary is a small-species parrot sanctuary in Fenton, Michigan. We provide a forever home for cockatiels, parakeets, conures, quakers, and other small parrots who will spend the rest of their lives in our care.

We do not adopt out our residents. However, we work with another rescue and occasionally assist with transporting adoptable birds and larger parrot species.

WHAT DO WE NEED? 🧹🦜
We currently have 4 AMAZING volunteers who are a tremendous help, but sometimes there just aren't enough hands to keep up with everything!

We're looking for compassionate, reliable people willing to donate their TIME to help our sanctuary and its feathered residents thrive.

Tasks include:
🧼 Cleaning cages and bird stands
🧹 Vacuuming and mopping floors
🧸 Rotating toys and enrichment
📦 Making foraging boxes
🧽 Washing walls and helping keep the sanctuary clean
❤️ Spending time interacting with and socializing our flock

Weekly cage and floor cleaning is a priority!

⏰ SCHEDULE & REQUIREMENTS
✔️ Must be 18+
✔️ Reliable transportation
✔️ Caring, compassionate, and dependable
✔️ Able to commit to a reliable schedule
✔️ Flexible scheduling, with shifts starting NO LATER than 9 AM and ending by 1:30 PM

Tangos training progress
He had a couple days of biting. I believe its from not keeping his schedule consistent.
I have been letting him out on the stands the past week so he can learn independence. Well, Beep the finch decided he is staying up late today. After a little while up on stands, we sit down and interact with cuddles or playing.
Today we sat together first. In the video, you can see Tango is on alert and not having and pets. He is also a little on edge. I feel this is due to his schedule being changed. I only keep the schedule strict during training. I dont want them to become to dependent on some aspects of it amd become scared of new things or scream if we had to change up a bit.
Towards the end, I moved my hand and touched his tail. Tango was not forgiving at first. But!! He did accept me talking to him and letting him know he was safe.
I believe this little man will always be nippy (part of their species) but due to his past, he will be quick to nip or bite. Ive learned, his tantrums usually subside if you dont give in.

Pluto and Baby wanted their bath. Baby took too long to jump in, Pluto helped her bath along! Lol

Rio update:

Blood work came back, AST levels are high. This is fatty liver disease. A result of poor diet. Seed is very high in fat with no vitamins or nutrients. We are introducing him to pellets and fresh chop. Blood work will be redone in 3-6 months depending on high quick he takes to the new food. He will be on meds to help his liver heal. This will possibly be for rest of life.

Tango!!!
Im so proud of this little guy today!! He flew to me once. I believe he was ready for bed, as I was walking into his room to get them ready, he flew to me. Dino did ask "wha cha doin"? I told him I was getting their stuff to go night night, Tango was on my shoulder with his gibberish jabber and asking for his night time pets. So, I am taking this as a victory with him being independent.

My next goal with him is to help/encourage him to explore more on the stands

Sitting with Rio today.

His vet visit was yesterday. Vet is concerned on how attached to humans he is. Our plan is to slowly show him he can be his own bird and love his humans too. We are waiting on blood test results. Fingers crossed all is good.

Allowing your bird to preen on you is a huge trust building technique and training. I have caught many issues while allowing them to just chill and preen. I've caught blood feathers that were bleeding, caught their oil gland infection, and noticed balance issues.

The biggest thing we are showing Rio is he can sit on a human, clean and not be touched or pet, and shows him he has his own space.

He has been an absolute sweetie!

Rios training today...
Well, what Ive learned so far from him.
* Doesn't step up
* Screams when he cant see you
* No interest in treats or other foods
* Great flight, but Doesn't understand dangers
* has no boundaries
*hormones are very high
* humans heads are his perch

The last couple days we have worked on settling, step up, trying to be content when I leave the room. Introducing new safe and healthy foods.

This handsome boy has so much going for him, I cant wait to see him flourish like a cockatiel should!
