This page was created to share our horses life changing journeys through rescue of slaughter bound horses. But progress is progressā¤ļø

This is Fergusā€™s 50 day transformation with a mash only diet due to his bodyā€™s struggle to chew and swallow hay, after his severe emaciation prompted some neurological struggles and brought him just inches from death.

Fergus has bounced back stronger each day, showing us without a doubt his will to live and to keep going. I am so beyond proud of how far he has come, not only physically but mentally as well seeing the literal life come back into his eyes!

I know this isnā€™t our typical rescue post (although you could consider it a rescue for our paddocks!), it is a post I certainly wanted to share and highlight, to thank a very incredible person, friend, and supporter of Kataluna!

Josh with Josh Myers has been working around the rescue for the last year on *major* paddock projects, ground management, manure bin refurbishment, brush clearing, fence building, pretty much everything you can think of in that line of work to help us make sure our horses live the happiest, healthiest & cleanest lifestyles we can give them! Coming from the horrific backgrounds most of these horses and donkeys have, they deserve nothing but the best and Josh has been our go to guy to go above and beyond to make that happen. Especially living in a climate where it rains non stop nine months out of the year, heā€™s helped make sure our paddocks are dry and our animals can get where they need to go in comfort (and style!). I cannot thank him enough for all the hard work and soul heā€™s put into this place over the last several monthsā¤ļø Thank you Josh! You make this possible to help us help more horses all across the country!

Meet Bailey the Haflinger mare and Mac the mini mule! Both available for adoption and ready for their new homes through Kataluna Horse Rescue!

šŸ“Bailey- This sweet girl is a roughly 17-20 year old 14.1hh Haflinger mare who we believe was started at a younger age but mostly been a broodmare in recent years. She came to our program in April and is finally ready to find her life partner! Bailey would do best in an intermediate level home as she needs a calm confident person to look towards. Sheā€™s been doing great on her groundwork and ground manners, goes for walks down the road by bikes, cars, and dogs and solo ventured down to the river without an issue or a single call to another horse, sheā€™s been wearing a saddle and slowly undergoing a confidence building restart but we have not ridden her yet just due to taking our time. She is happy and healthy, all green lights from our vet & up to date on her vaccines, deworming, farrier care, dentals, etc.! Sheā€™s a brave girl but lacks the confidence so thatā€™s what weā€™re helping her find.

šŸ«Mac- Mac is a 3-4 year old mini mule gelding! He stands around 35inches tall, and he is halter broke and trained to ride, however we have also been taking things rather slow with Mac as more of his retraining since coming to KHR has been confidence building and learning to trust people again as we believe heā€™s been mostly man handled his whole life due to his small size. Donā€™t let him fool you though he will run the roost! If you need a pasture companion for a rowdy gelding or mare, Mac is your guy! I wouldnā€™t recommend him with another calmer mini horse as he will push them around. He needs a good playmate. Mac is also up to date on his farrier care, vaccines, and deworming. He would do best in an intermediate to experienced home.

Holly and her little Berry are doing so well in their quarantine with the most amazing caretakerā¤ļø I still canā€™t believe where this mare and her sweet little foal would have ended up otherwise. Moments like these remind me of how truly grateful I am to do what we do for the horses. Itā€™s always for the horses.

SURPRISE!!!! WE HAVE A BABY!!

A little under two weeks ago you guys helped us reach an incredible life changing goal for ELEVEN horsesā€¦ wellā€¦ eleven has now TURNED INTO TWELVE!

Sweet Holly, a heavily pregnant mare who was actually our very first save of this entire group, when we pulled her from the sl@ughter pipeline right before she was about to load up on one of those gosh awful trailers with her unborn foal. We were called to help, and help is exactly what we did because these mamas have such a hold on my heart after seeing the wonderful caretakers and teachers they become in having a safe, happy, healthy home to raise their little one.

An auction yard is no place for any baby to start their life, not mother to birth her child. And thanks to this village, Holly and her little baby will never have to know that ever again.

When sometimes all she needs is her little emotional support cowšŸ„¹ā¤ļø Iā€™ve had lots of questions on how miss Millie Moo is recovering after her seizure episode. There are honestly still lots of questions we are trying to get answers on as to what caused this in the first place, as Millie lives one of the most spoiled, cared for lives of any cow youā€™d ever meet. We should hopefully get some bloodwork results back tomorrow and see how best we can proceed from there.

We were really worried about long term to permanent neurological damage after the first couple days, but we are continuing to see improvements little by little which is keeping me really hopeful! She is eating drinking sleeping and all the good things she should be doing. The only thing I havenā€™t gotten again yet is her sweet little moo. Millie normally mooā€™s at me every time she sees me, hears my truck, or notices me from across the farm, so Iā€™m waiting very patiently and eagerly the hear her little voice again. I know it will comeā¤ļø

I truly thought that may be the last time I saw my little best friend, so the fact that sheā€™s still here and still fighting means sheā€™s not ready to leave this pampered life yet! Thank you all so much for the kind prayers, love and well wishes.

Olaf has been ADOPTED!!

Into the most wonderful amazing home we could ever ask for himšŸ„¹šŸ¤ Olaf came to the rescue emaciated and covered from head to toe in scars after working a lifetime as an Amish plow horse. He was ridden in skeleton condition and sold to a sl@ughter pen.

When we decided to bring him home, we learned he was nearly in his late twenties to early thirties, just an old guy who needed a peaceful retirement which is so earned.

Well, last week Olaf found just that, actually with a former Kataluna adopter who has also been caring for Butters our former one eyed Belgian who we found with a monster size cancerous tumor that engulfed her eye socket.

Olaf settled right in like he knew immediately he was home, and even befriended his very own little Paco the mini donkey!

This is what we make happen here, together, a better life for themšŸ¤
