Letting seniors be seniors and babies be babies is one of my ultimate heart passions in what we do with these rescues.

The horses who have worked their whole lives to be cast aside and dumped in the pipeline when they can no longer keep up, and foals just starting their lives who deserve so so so much better. Our goal is to not fail them like everyone else has.

Sven is one of those babies. He came in with Olaf who I shared about yesterday. Sven was bred and brought to a kill pen, spray painted with giant red X’s labeled as a direct ship before he even got a chance to live his life.

That’s where YOU came in, and help us make this possible. Now Sven gets the opportunity to live an amazing life of love and happiness with herd mates and lush green pastures. That’s exactly how it should be.

Letting babies be babies, and seniors be seniors❤️

De fluffifying horses means SUNNY WARM WEATHER IS HERE☀️ Little Boo was quite happy after her spa session and all the horses have been enjoying their sunshine time which we don’t get enough of here in PNW.

Olaf🤍
This sweet old man was rescued just hours before finding himself on a one way trip to Mexico. He was dumped in a kill pen emaciated, covered in scars, and ridden in this condition.

Upon getting Olaf home we learned he is mostly likely in his late twenties to early thirties and missing quite a few teeth, so needs an all mash diet. He was incredibly shut down, I think because all he had known with people is work. Over the last few weeks, he has started opening up more and more each day. The seniors really do just capture my heart in every way shape and form, and I am so grateful he gets to finish out his life with honor and dignity thanks to this community🤍

A weekend of pure magic🦄🐄✨

Kataluna had the honor and privilege of bringing our incredible unicorns Bud, Mila, Dolly and Millie Moo the *Moonicorn* (pretty sure Millie is the only Moo-nicorn to ever exist👑) to join the realm of Mysthaven this past weekend at the Whidbey Island Renaissance Faire😍

This is a little different than our regular rescue posts, but I was so excited to share this adventure with you and even more excited to express how truly PROUD I am of these amazing horses.
Mila and Bud have been apart of my personal herd for several years now, when I made the decision to bring them into my family and adopt them from the rescue, after they were discarded and thrown away into the horse slaughter pipeline because they were “no longer useful” outside of their working years.

Well these horses have just about defied every ounce of that in more ways than I could ever express, because we stepped up and gave them the opportunity they deserved to shine. The horses truly blew me away with how much they enjoyed being there and bringing so many smiles to so many people. They had to option to walk away and take some time for themselves whenever they needed, but when they were ready, they were right back at the front lines ready to make more dreams come to life.

Dolly, another former Kataluna rescue who was sold at an auction emaciated , sick, and inches away from death, now adopted and thriving and showing the world what a real comeback looks like.

The weekend was almost entirely flawless, however we did run into a slight hiccup on the way home when one of our trailer tires blew out…😆 BUT we have an amazing team of people and made the most of a not so flawless situation getting all the animals back home safely!

All in all, this weekend was truly one for the books, with the best animals and the best people!
If that isn’t real life magic, I don’t know what is🥹✨💛

Mojo and his healing journey❤️‍🩹
(Warning- some graphic photos)

Mojo is a sweet and saucy gelding we brought into the rescue back in March as an owner surrender due to an older injury that needed immediate care. For Mojo, once the extent of this injury was brought to light, it was quickly learned someone needed to give him a fighting chance, otherwise there was no way this would heal and Mojo would loose his life.

Thankfully his owners/caretaker reached out to us here so we could help give Mo that opportunity for a chance to try. It’s been months of vetting, different topicals, X-rays, bandaging, special shoes for his fronts as he is lame for a different reason, we even administered medical maggots to help reduce dead tissue, which worked great, but Mo is just not healing the way we would like him to after two months of regular treatments. So yesterday we went back to the drawing board with one last Hail Mary before things get more invasive in hopes of letting his body heal itself as naturally as it can. He will get a new type of topical steroid powder starting today and we will give him another couple weeks to see if that makes a difference. With some cases, especially like Mo’s, it really is one day at a time. Thankfully this boy has so much patience with us as we navigate this journey with him❤️

Over the last month and a half we’ve been working on a HUGE project…

And finally this weekend we made that project COME TO LIFE! Thanks to our incredible team of volunteers who helped open up another pasture space for our horses by clearing old brush, fallen logs, blackberry & bramble bushes, and more, we were able to create a magical, safe, woods part of our pasture for our herd!

Herd enrichment and stimulation is so incredible and important to the values in our “rehab” work for the rescues who come onto the ranch. They go through so much trauma and heartache so offering a safe place for them to live their life and recover not only physically but mentally just helps them blossom so much more.

So now you get to watch the first time the whole herd to gets to embrace and enjoy the new environment🥹😍 this truly feels like a dream come true

Gosh I love this old guy. Fergus is still fighting his way through one of the worst parts of life, he is sick and recovering, building up weight, muscle, and balance, and working as hard as his body can to keep going.
Right now he is getting three different types of mashes throughout the day, meds to fight infection, light grooming and his first bath to get rid of as much of the auction gunk as we could, but this horse was pushed so far to his limits. Throughout he all, he is still here, and he is still going, so we will fight right beside him❤️
