Meet King Your Everything Companion 🌟

Hi, I’m King, a handsome 1 year and 3-month-old, neutered, red & white Labrador Retriever mix with a can-do attitude! If my owner wants to swim, run, fetch, do agility or just cuddle, I’m down with that!! I also know commands, leash walking, and get along with other dogs and people! If your dog grabs a cane toad, you have seconds, not minutes. That is why drop it is one of the most important commands I teach.

The key is teaching it as a trade. Your dog learns that when a human hand comes to their mouth, it is coming to give, not take. Practice a little every day and it becomes second nature.

This matters even more with dogs who guard their things, and in homes with little kids. You never want a child reaching for something in a guarding dog's mouth without that foundation in place.

Can your dog read your mind? The fortune teller is staring into the crystal ball, paw on chin, still working on it. I can save some time on this one.

Your dog cannot read your thoughts. But your dog is one of the best people readers on the planet. Researchers have found that trained dogs can pick out a stressed person from a relaxed one by scent alone. On top of that, your dog spends all day watching you: your face, your hands, how fast you move, the tone of your voice. To us it looks like mind reading. To them it is just paying attention.

That is great news for training, because it works in both directions.

Think of your leash like a phone line. Whatever you are feeling, your dog hears it on the other end. If you grip the leash tight and hold your breath every time a dog or a delivery truck shows up, your dog learns that those things are a problem. If you stay loose, breathe, and keep moving with a calm voice, your dog learns that you have it covered.

A good place to start: notice when your dog looks up at you on a walk, and reward it. Those little check ins are your dog asking how things are going. The more you answer, the more they ask.

Thank you, Sady! Reviews like this are the best part of my week.

When Sady reached out, Max was showing classic fear aggression. New people and new dogs set him off, and that kind of reaction is almost always a dog telling you he does not feel safe.

So instead of just stopping the reaction, I worked on changing how Max feels. Using the "look at that" game, I helped Sady desensitize and counter condition Max, pairing new people and dogs with good things at a distance he could handle. Step by step, the fear faded.

Max responded beautifully. And Sady became exactly the calm, confident leader he needed to feel safe and secure. That part is all her, and I could not be prouder of these two.

Lately I keep walking into training sessions where the dog is jumping on the owner, the guests, and me too.

Most owners do the same thing. They look at the dog, push it off, and say no. The problem is that all of that is attention, and attention rewards the jumping. Your dog learns that jumping works.

The fix starts with a strong sit and a strong stay, so your dog learns to respect your personal space. If your dog is already on you, turn away and calmly interrupt the behavior instead of engaging.

Lately I have been getting a lot of calls about "aggressive dogs," so I want to share what I tell every owner.

Aggression is part of the normal way dogs communicate. Any dog is capable of biting, bite history or not, so I never want owners to label their dog. What I want them to do is learn the warning signs: averting eyes, growling, showing teeth, and a stiffening body. Those signals come before the bite, and they tell you your dog is stressed.

Aggression is almost always provoked, which means there is a reason behind it. My job is to find that reason and train you and your dog so the risk goes way down. Trained dogs have more confidence and a much higher threshold for stress.

The one thing I ask is that you do not wait. The longer it goes, the harder it is to rehabilitate. If your dog is showing any of these signs, reach out. Free consultations always.

Please help me congratulate Linda and her gorgeous mini poodle, Carli, on graduating!

Carli came to me with a full list of puppy habits: jumping, nipping, chewing, barking, and leash pulling. Every one of them is gone.

This little girl is super smart. She picked up focus, obedience, manners, and loose leash walking perfectly. And Linda was diligent every step of the way, doing the exercises with Carli and doing the reading too. When an owner commits like that, the dog rises to meet them.

The result is a Canine Command Canine Good Citizen that Linda can be proud to bring around her neighbors, friends, and family. I could not be happier for this duo.

Ben Williams said it best: "There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face."

After all my years working with dogs, I still think this is one of the truest things anyone has said about them. A dog doesn't ask what's wrong or how your week went. They just close the distance and remind you that you're loved, right now, exactly as you are.

I see it in so many of the homes I visit. The dog who lies on the feet of the person who had a hard day. The one who won't leave someone's side when they're not feeling well. That kind of comfort can't be trained. It's just who they are.
