Western Horsemanship ➡️ Let’s talk about it!
Western Horsemanship can be looked at as the western equivalent to English equitation. It studies a rider having proper form, balance, and correct posture. When done correctly- it’s hard!
You’ll often hear me say things like “open your hip”, “roll your seat bones back”, “tighten your core.” “Lift your hand up.” Just a very few key elements for balance and communication.
Beyond these elements, horsemanship is also about communication, subtle guidance, and harmony between horse and rider.
Clear communication is so incredibly important in this discipline. Imagine going into a math class and the teacher tells you 2 plus 2 is 4 consistently then one day they are having a bad day and they say 3 plus 7 is 4. You are confused and they are frustrated with you for not understanding. In this scenario, the rider is the teacher and “you” are the horse. Our horses look to us for consistency and reassurance. This sounds easy, but when you’re dealing with every day emotions and working with a 1300 animal with a mind of their own, it can be pretty hard! This discipline truly challenges a rider to clear their mind and be 100% present with their horse.
As I share more content over the coming months, if you watch a pattern and think that looks so easy, it means we’re doing something right! It’s important to know that horse and rider have been working hard at those meanuvers for months/years. The pattern is simply the icing on the cake, putting it all together.
I’ll post some patterns in the future for your critique in the comment section as you become more familiar with this journey. 🙂
