As temperatures rise, it's important to keep our furry family members safe from the summer heat!

Here are a few tips to help protect your pets:
- Always provide fresh, cool water.
- Limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day.
- Walk dogs in the early morning or evening when sidewalks are cooler.
- Check the pavement with your hand, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for their paws!
- Never leave pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
- Make sure your pet has access to shade and a cool place to rest.

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. If you suspect your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Let's keep our pets happy, healthy, and safe all summer long!

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

As you spend time with family and friends this weekend, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful holiday. If your celebrations include cookouts, gatherings, or travel, remember to keep your pets safe by avoiding foods that can be harmful to them, providing plenty of fresh water, and ensuring they have a quiet place to relax.

From all of us at Thoreau Veterinary Hospital, thank you to those who have served and to the families who have sacrificed so much.

Wishing you a safe Memorial Day!

April is Heartworm & Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and prevention is everything!

Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes, while Lyme disease is transmitted through ticks. Both can have serious, even life-threatening effects on your pet’s health. The good news is they are highly preventable!

Here’s how you can protect your furry friend:
- Keep your pet on year-round heartworm prevention
- Use veterinarian recommended tick preventatives
- Check your pet regularly for ticks, especially after outdoor adventures
- Schedule annual testing to catch any issues early

Even indoor pets are at risk, so staying consistent with prevention is important!

If you have questions about the best prevention plan for your pet, we’re here to help. Give us a call today!
