Guardian Program:
What is it and why?
Basically speaking a guardian is someone the breeder picks and they receive a puppy of the breeders choosing at no cost. The breeder retains breeding rights of the dog for a set amount of litters. When the dog ages out of breeding the breeder pays for the spay and the guardian keeps the dog. Males will stay in tact through age 6 yrs.
But why, why would you want a guardian program part of your breeding program. It is common practice that breeders have a large number of animals and they live in out buildings. Once the animals age out the adults are put up for adoption. We prefer that the dogs we breed are loved family pets first. They live in the home with their family. All our dogs live in our home. We currently have 3. Even when they are no longer breeding (or have never been bred) they stay with us for life. I think this is a best practice for the animals. It is a personal choice, but one our family feels strongly about. We desire to expand what we do because we love it! So we felt this was a perfect compromise.
Guardians have to live within a certain radius of our home (20-30 minute drive from Clarence NY). The dogs need to continue to socialize with us. If the guardian family goes away on vacation the dog will either stay with a family member or an approved in home dog sitter, never to a kennel. This will keep the dog as healthy as possible and prevent “accidental pregnancies”. If for any reason the dog is not fit to breed, the guardian will be responsible for the cost of the spay and keep the dog.
There are other expectations for the guardian family. Those details will be gone over with the families that are interested. If you think you may be interested please message me.
