We are a small family homestead next to the Little Maquoketa River in the Midwest Driftless Region. Stone Hollow Gardens began in 2015.

Christopher and Emily Appelman moved into a windmill house nestled between two limestone ridges. The month after they moved in they broke ground, readying themselves for the garden to follow. A month and a half later they were already selling plant starters at the Dubuque Farmers Market. Since then they have become known as the local foragers and growers. Eight months out of the year they organica

lly farm, cultivate and forage mushrooms, and make jams/preserves with berries gathered from around their local area. Their cultivated mushrooms are grown outside on logs. This growing method enhances flavor and makes each mushroom variety seasonal. Outside of the season they offer dehydrated mushrooms. Stop by the Dubuque Farmer's Market and visit the Stone Hollow Gardens stand. Throughout the season stay updated weakly on what will be at their stand. Dubuque Farmer's Market is every Saturday, beginning the first weekend in May, from 7am to 12pm.

A beautiful but hot and somewhat hard week for me and the girls….. unfortunately me and the girls had to say goodbye to our beloved Grandmama this week and couldn’t miss her more than we do right now…..

I gotta tell you….so far as a Papa one of The hardest things I’ve ever done is tell my two most amazing not so little girls that my Mama’s mama and Sparrow and Mae Mae’s grandma had passed away!

Goodbye grandmama, you are and will be missed 💗 beyond words!

After somewhat of a rough start and an absolute scorcher of a week We’re picking up the pieces, keeping busy and doing our best as a family…. but be assured we’ll be packed up and rolling homestead heavy into Dubuque Farmers' Market bright & early tomorrow morning for Labor Day weekend!

We Kept ourselves busy in and out of the heat and in between things this week with amazing conversations with Sparrow hawk while waiting for her school bus at one of the prettiest bus stops the side of the Mississippi, A little bit of Schoolwork, Reading time and Papa time at home with Mae Mae Moon while she recovered, Wild Elderberry and Pear🍐pick’n, Mushroom🍄‍🟫harvesting (homegrown & Wild🍄‍🟫caught😉), potting up plants 🪴 , squeezing organic lemons and juicing up Elderberries, blueberries & watermelon for a few delicious and seasonal Pink lemonade creations For Labor Day weekend….

And just like that we’re back to Friday…..So a little bit worse for ware here’s Just a few of our offerings for tomorrow mornings Dubuque farmers market….

An incredibly fun but
busy busy week in and out
of the Hollow …..

Attended Sageville’s “Back To School Open House” with the girls on Monday after finally getting our amazing and not so little girls back into their school of choice, needless to say Sparrow & Esmae Moon Were more excited for their first day back to school Than I’ve seen them in a very long time!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😉🤗👊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

And early week spent wandering timber and trail in search of wild eats For our bellies and Dubuque Farmers' Market as well as More than a bit of tedious Mushroom work in between things here in the Hollow…. Creating 🍄‍🟫grow bags, expanding liquid🍄‍🟫cultures, inoculating future🍄‍🟫blocks, initiating the fruiting process in over 30+ ready to fruit mushroom blocks preparing for fall, winter and future harvests over the next few months….

And a Thursday to Friday impromptu visit to Iowa City with Mae Mae Moon to navigate a couple very important 🦷 issues…. So incredibly proud Of our most amazing 7 year old girl for her Bravery, strength and patience As we managed this hurried but important 🦷 surgery in Iowa City…. Don’t worry Esmae is back home Cuddled up and cozy here in the hollow with The Papa and her most amazing supportive sister Sparrow recovering and resting for the weekend!

In order to navigate a restful weekend for our youngest Mae Mae moon This here Papa will be taking off this weeks Dubuque farmers Market for all the right reasons 😉🤗👊!

A Soggy bottomed⛈️and busy, busy week in and out of the Hollow……

A somewhat compromising as well as a precariously slippery week spent wandering timber & trail In search of wild morsels for home, our bellies 🤤 and tomorrow mornings Market…😉🍄‍🟫🫐🍄🌿👊…..a nice flush of Wild Chicken of the Woods & a Few late season Oyster mushrooms were procured, a rainy day trip to the Vineyard/Orchard to check on Concord’s 🍇 and harvest a few flats of Bartlet as well as Asian Pears 🍐 in between things !

Back at home in the Hollow my most amazing and beautiful not so little girls Sparrow Lee & Mae Mae moon landed back home For 1 of our 2 most Cherished and grateful weekends together outta the month… they got to Squeeze’n lemons🍋press’n cherries🍒, blueberries🫐, raspberries And juice’n a couple delicious local watermelons🍉 to whip up some of the best Pink and Old-Fashioned lemonade this side of the Mississippi…… while our beyond creative young entrepreneurs navigated their homestead inspired lemonade creations and bagging up RiverStones The Papa(me) got down to a bit of somewhat hurried Market prep restock’n🍄‍🟫 Seasoning blends, Prepping then drying one of my favorite Medicinals Red Reishi, bottling 🍄‍🟫extracts, pick’n a literal plethora of Fresh Organically grown Mushrooms🍄‍🟫from the Shroom Shack(Shiitake🍄‍🟫,Lions mane😳,Baby&Jumbo🍄‍🟫Portobello and Golden/Grey Dove/Blue/Florida Oyster Mushrooms), weighing and box’n up an epic🍄‍🟫mushroom harvest, putting around 30+ new fully colonized🍄‍🟫grow bags into they’re fruiting chambers, inoculating 20+ newly made 🍄‍🟫 5 1/2 pound🍄‍🟫grow bags, putting together a few more “Stone Hollow Mushroom Trio and Single Science Kits, Sorting then box’n up Pears in between hanging out with the girls, making popcorn/huge from scratch Belgium waffles/delicious breakfasts/lunches & dinners, watching movies, playing games and enjoying the precious time we have together…. And just like that….. here we are again back to Friday rolling Homestead heavy 😉😵‍💫🙏😳👊with less than 24 hours before we’re dodging rain☔️and setting up those canopies, tables and laying out our
grateful Homestead goods
at Dubuque Farmers' Market 😵‍💫 !

Well, friends as always a long busy as all get out and somewhat precarious week in the hollow….

Took a weekend off to enjoy and embrace my time with my most amazing and beautiful girls Sparrow & Mae Mae Moon during the very short time that we get to spend together….. never seems like enough And goes by far too quickly…. Visited our incredible Grandmama over the River and through the woods,Watched movies, played games, made a whole lotta popcorn And an in general weekend spent having fun with the girls….. creating beautiful memories and cherishing what we have!

After an amazing weekend spent with my 2 beautiful not so little girls…. Hit the ground running on Tuesday and spent the rest of the week getting all the important things (grain🍄‍🟫spawn transferred, substrate🍄‍🟫bagged,🍄‍🟫directions made… etc) prepared, labeled and boxed up For our “ Stone Hollow Mushroom Trio & Single Science/Stems Kits” for their debut at this morning’s market……As well as harvesting a ridiculous amount of delicious fresh mushrooms from the Shroom shack….had just enough time left over on Friday to get lemons squeezed, cherries🍒 as well raspberries Pressed, blueberries🫐 and watermelon juiced for Mae Mae & Sparrow’s lemonade stand… a busy week indeed!

And just like that, we’re back to getting up before the sun rises in just a few hours before we see y’all this morning at Dubuque Farmers' Market !

Even though the girls will be absent from Market this week, keeping a promise and rocking their amazing little business even when they’re not here….So Stop by and grab some lemonade or fresh picked beyond organically grown mushrooms friends

Also wanted to talk about one of the reasons why I personally and all of us here at Stone Hollow Homestead started doing farmers market as a vendor…..

For us here at Stone Hollow, Dubuque Farmers' Market has always been the best opportunity for us to teach people about the most amazing and resilient world of 🍄‍🟫fungi🍄‍🟫 (edible or not edible),
to teach all the amazing people in our community about the resiliency, beauty and the overall necessity of fungi and mycelium when it comes to soil, growing food as well as the importance of mushrooms and Mycorrhizal mycelium’s presence in our forests……

This has always been my personal favorite things when it comes to every Saturday morning we get to relay our love for and teach our world and the people around us about one of the most important parts of our ecology……🍄‍🟫MUSHROOMS🍄‍🟫…..

Without mushroom mycelium on a mycorrhizal level and its very existence in our soil, land and forests none of it works….. and nothing grows!

After an amazing weekend and market spent with the girls Last week….. A Monday to Friday slow roll of a week…..Was spent with a little bit of time each day in between things in full rest mode for the Papa and a Somewhat medically compromising start to our week dealing with the many post treatment symptoms and repercussions of what things look like now after three years of aggressive ☢️ therapy and everything that it took to not just fight but survive this battle with the Big C…….

Rest rest rest….. and an every day roll spent catching up in between things preparing for this weeks Dubuque Farmers' Market !

The Lemon’s 🍋 have been squeezed, the cherries 🍒 and raspberries have been freshly pressed, the watermelon 🍉 and blueberries 🫐 have been juiced….. and although Sparrow Lee and Mae Mae Moon are on their family vacation with their mama I promised to rock there stand “ Little Bird & Mae Mae’s Riverstones and Oddities” in their absence…… so let’s show them a bit of support….Stop by and grab a glass of ice cold old-fashioned lemonade with a twist…..

A beautiful and beyond amazing weekend and week spent adventuring and exploring the creeks, lakes and tributaries of Iowa….camping, Swimming, paddle boarding, wood, wandering and more with my most amazing beautiful girls Sparrow Lee & Mae Mae Moon…..

After an amazing week well spent with my beautiful not so little Girls…..We spent time in between things preparing for this week’s Dubuque Farmers' Market as well as the ongoing rebuild Stone Hollow Homestead as we’ve come to know it….

Pressing 🍒’s and squeezing 🍋’s For some of the best tasting Lemonade and Cherry & Razz Pink lemonade this side of the Mississippi….Yep, Super proud of my little girls in order to diversify and add to their market offerings Look out for a few more seasonal flavors all ingredients fresh, real, and organically made amongst their offerings on the weekly throughout the rest of
