🐾 Meet Lyanna 🐾

Almost one year ago, Lyanna arrived at the shelter with skin issues that left her almost completely hairless. With lots of medicated baths, treatment, and care from our staff and volunteers, this girl has come a long way. ❤️ Today, Lyanna is healed, happy, and ready for her forever home. Her fur has grown back, although it remains short and peach-fuzzy — which means minimal grooming and very little shedding!

Lyanna is currently enjoying a short break from shelter life as a “Heat Wave Foster”, and her foster has said that Lyanna:

☀️ Has been sweet, gentle, and calm
🚗 Rode beautifully in the car
💕 Has loved belly rubs and affection
🚶‍♀️ Enjoys going on walks
☀️ LOVES sunbathing
🎾 Loves to play! She especially enjoys chasing a ball, and she has been gentle enough that volunteers can take the ball from her.
🚪 Quickly learned how to use a doggie door and loves being able to go in and out on her own. When the door is closed, she'll sit by it to let you know she needs to go outside — what a smart girl!
🛏️ Has done well in a crate and settles down easily for bedtime or quiet time.

Lyanna has been dog selective at the shelter and because of this, she'd do best as an only pet or with an experienced adopter who understands the importance of slow, careful introductions and proper management. In her foster home, Lyanna has not reacted to the neighbor’s dogs and has been quiet when they’ve barked at her.

We would love to see Lyanna in a forever home before she hits one year of shelter life!

Meet ✨ Yaya | A428147 Heat Wave Foster

🐾 3-year-old Shepherd Mix | 46 lbs

We’ve had the absolute pleasure of fostering Yaya (A428147) this week for the Heat Wave, and we can’t say enough wonderful things about this sweet pup!

Yaya is sweet, curious, happy, and playful. She loves toys, exploring, going for walks, snuggling, and simply being with her people. She’s potty trained, great in the car, and has been wonderful with kids and our other female dog. Oh, and she has THE best ears!

Watching Yaya settle into a home environment has been so special. She has truly started to shine outside of the shelter, and we know she’ll continue to blossom with a family of her own.

🐾 Yaya’s quirks—

💦 The loudest gulper!

🍽️ Enthusiastic eater.

🏃‍♀️ Escape artist.

🧸 Squeaky toy champion!

Please help us find Yaya the loving home she deserves! 🐾💕

⚡️🐾 Meet Thor! 🐾⚡️

Thor is one handsome hunk who definitely knows how to have a good time! 💙

This fun-loving boy loves playing fetch and chewing on his tennis ball. 🎾
He is a polite gentleman who sits nicely for treats and takes them gently. And if you’re feeling playful, toss one his way - Thor can catch treats right out of the air! 😋

When it’s time to cool off, Thor is ALL about the hose! 💦 He happily lets you spray him and loves trying to catch the water in his mouth. 😂 His playful, happy, and affectionate personality really shines when he’s out in the play yard.

And here’s something extra special… 🥹❤️ Someone loves Thor so much that they drew the sweetest portrait of him and put it right on his kennel! 🎨🐾 How adorable is that?! It’s just another little reminder of how easy it is to fall for this handsome boy. See the artwork in the photos below!

If you’re looking for a handsome, playful, treat-loving boy with a big personality, Thor could be your guy! 🐶💙

🩷 Smokey really needs someone to give her a chance 🩷

🐱 Smokey is a 3-year-old spayed brown tabby cat who is currently living in one of our offices because shelter life has been hard on her. She is visually impaired and can mostly see shadows and shapes, but she doesn’t let that slow her down. She gets around great and has learned how to navigate her space just fine.

And Smokey definitely has a personality! She loves butt scratches, long naps, and just hanging out. If your idea of a perfect day involves relaxing on the couch, Smokey may be your girl. 🐈

She even shares her office space with one of our shelter alumni, Kevin, a medium-sized dog. Does she love having him around? Not exactly. But she does just fine with him and has learned to coexist. 🐱❤️🐶

The hardest part is that Smokey doesn’t get many visitors tucked away in an office. She’s easy to miss, and we really don’t want her to keep waiting simply because people don’t know she’s here.

Please come meet Smokey. Spend a little time with her, give her some butt scratches, and see if this special girl might be the one you’ve been looking for. She really deserves a home of her own and Smokey MUST be an indoor kitty. 🏠🐾

☀️ The Final Chapter of My “Heatwave Foster” Jose | Montgomery County Animal Shelter | ID: A427319

Five days. That’s all Jose had with me. And somehow, in just five short days, this sweet boy reminded me how incredibly resilient dogs can be when someone simply gives them the opportunity to experience life.

During my time with Jose, I learned that many of the things we consider completely ordinary may have been entirely new to him. Riding in a car. Walking through a back door. Watching television. Being surrounded by multiple people. Even stepping into a home.

But you know what Jose did? He learned. He observed. He followed. And he conquered each new experience with a quiet bravery that completely stole my heart. 🤍

Jose has been an incredible observer. He watched my two resident small dogs navigate their world and confidently followed their lead. If they walked through the back door, Jose followed. If they settled into a dog bed, Jose found one too. If they went about their business as though everything was perfectly normal, Jose seemed to think, “Oh… so THIS is how we do things?” 😂 And just like that, another new experience became part of his world.

He has shown me that he is brave, resilient, gentle, and incredibly adaptable.

Rain? Fine.
Thunder? Fine.
Lightning? Fine.
New people? He observes.
New environments? He takes his time.
New experiences? He figures them out.

And when Jose gets really excited, he has one very special way of expressing it: he likes to “cobb.” 🥹🌽

For anyone unfamiliar, cobbing is a completely harmless, gentle behavior where a dog pulls his lips back and rapidly nibbles with his front teeth. It looks hilariously like someone eating corn right off the cob—which is exactly where the name comes from.

It’s just one of those little quirks that makes Jose… Jose. 🤍

My favorite part of fostering him has been watching his personality emerge. The reserved boy who initially needed time to feel comfortable became the boy who gave us his first zoomies. The dog who may not have known what to make of a home became the dog confidently following my resident pups around. The shelter dog became a houseguest who knew how to find a cozy bed, stretch his legs out, and settle in.

And he did all of that in FIVE DAYS.

So I can’t help but wonder… What could Jose become with a little more time? What would another week teach him? What would another month of safety, patience, routine, and love unlock? What if someone gave him the chance to discover that the world is so much bigger—and kinder—than the shelter environment he knows?

Jose doesn’t need someone to change who he is. He just needs someone willing to show him how beautiful an ordinary life can be.

A soft bed.
A peaceful home.
A few leisurely walks.
Someone to nap beside.
A family to observe, trust, and eventually love with his whole heart.

If Jose can experience this much growth in only five days, imagine the life you could help him discover with more time outside of the shelter. 🥹🤍

My time as Jose’s “Heatwave Foster” may be coming to an end, but I hope this isn’t the end of his story. He is brave. He is resilient. He is gentle. And he deserves the chance to experience a normal life.

If you’re considering fostering or adopting a sweet soul who is ready to discover the world with you, please give Jose a chance. [email protected]

Meet Heat Wave Foster, Dixie! 🖤🤍

Dixie is a 5-year-old, 40 lb terrier mix who has spent months being overlooked at the shelter. And after fostering her temporarily this week, we think we know why—the shelter just isn't a place where Dixie can show you who she really is.

With all the noise and stress, she shuts down and gets very nervous. Her first night at our house, her tail was tucked and her eyes were huge. By the next morning, her tail was up and wagging and she was asking for pets. After 24 hours, we had a completely different dog—playing, running around the yard, rolling over for belly rubs, and wagging her tail like crazy.

She's been great with our three dogs (12–50 lbs) and our child. She appears kennel trained, knows sit, loves treats and bones, and has been doing great going potty outside. Our dogs bark at absolutely everything, while Dixie couldn't care less. We've haven't heard a peep out of her!

She loves exploring the yard, playing tug-of-war, and having her very speckled belly scratched. She does want to chase squirrels, so cats probably aren't her thing.

And speaking of spots—Dixie is covered in awesome black and white patches and even has a little heart on one of her feet. ❤️

If you've passed Dixie by at the shelter because she looked scared or shut down, take another look. Give this girl a quiet place to decompress and you will be amazed by the dog who shows up!

If you think Dixie might be your girl, reach out to us or Montgomery County Animal Shelter ([email protected])—we’d love to help you set up a meet-and-greet and see if she’s the right fit! (Dixie: A422722)
