We're often asked - which of your crops gives you the most food? And while we grow many different crops that are all nutritious and delicious, the heavy hitter when it comes to pure weight yield is our cucumbers!

Our cucumbers grow in our workforce development greenhouse - via hydroponics and a high-wire cable trellis system. These 44 cucumber plants are quite a sight to behold once they reach the top of the trellis and even more impressive is the amount of fresh nutritious food they produce for our neighbors. In just one day last week, we harvested over 400 lbs of cucumbers alone to take to our Mid-Ohio Markets. Last growing season, cucumbers made up over a quarter of the weight of all crops grown at Mid-Ohio Farm on the Hilltop.

Cucumbers are a great snack always, but especially in the summer. They're in season, hydrating (due to the fact they're made up of 95% water), and full of fiber. They're excellent for encouraging strong bones, regulating blood pressure, promoting weight loss, aiding digestion, and preventing constipation. Drop your favorite cucumber recipes below!

During the last two weeks, the Mid-Ohio Farm on the Hilltop, in partnership with Columbus City Schools and Hilliard City Schools, hosted the second annual Celebration of Agriculture, welcoming more than 1,800 students for hands-on agricultural learning. 🌾

Over three days, across 48 community partner stations, students planted food, tasted Ohio-grown ingredients, toured greenhouses and orchards, and connected agriculture to their everyday lives in ways that a classroom alone cannot replicate.

More than 250 teachers and chaperones showed up alongside them. So did dozens of community organizations and volunteers who gave their time to make hands-on learning possible at this scale.
This is what farm-to-school looks like when a community shows up for its kids. We're so proud to be part of it through our work and can't thank everyone involved in making these days a reality enough.

Same time next year??

Happy World Bee Day! Today, we’re celebrating the tiny pollinators that play a huge role in our food system and in the work happening every day at Mid-Ohio Farm. 💛🐝

Bees and other pollinators help make food production possible and at Mid-Ohio Farm, our honeybees help pollinate crops like fruit trees, tomatoes, peppers, berries, squash, cucumbers and eggplant.

Last week, we partnered with The bee collective to install two new honeybee hives at the farm, helping support stronger pollination, healthier crops and, ultimately, more food for our neighbors. Because sometimes the best farmers are the smallest ones!

Our 2026 Mid-Ohio Farm Mentees have been hard at work preparing their growing spaces for the season. We prepared new asparagus patches and planted crowns, amended our raised bed soils, and filled our vertical towers with a fresh substrate mixture.

In addition to all of the preparation, we have been sowing our first seeds of the season. We look forward to planting outside here in the next couple of weeks! Mentees have also been diligently learning about soil health, structure, and how to farm in a regenerative way.

A big thanks to Jeff Dickinson, the farmer at Stratford Ecological Center, for teaching us about integrated-livestock management and how to build strong, healthy, diverse soil structures and ecosystems. Remember — it’s all connected!

This Earth Day, ScottsMiracle-Gro showed what meaningful partnership looks like in action.

With 20 dedicated volunteers on-site, we were able to seed 20 trays of lettuce for our vertical tower systems, enrich our in-ground growing spaces with compost and mulch, and restore our herb and flower beds along the building through planting, weeding, and a lot of TLC.

These moments go beyond a single day of service, they represent what’s possible when organizations invest their time, energy, and people into strengthening local food systems. The impact of this work will continue to grow in the weeks and months ahead.

We’re grateful for partners who don’t just support the mission, but actively help move it forward.

At our Smart Orchard, what’s happening between the rows matters just as much as what’s on the trees. We’ve partnered with Walnut Creek Seeds, LLC right here in Central Ohio to plant a custom cover crop blend designed to support the soil from the ground up.

This mix is all about balance! Building organic matter, improving soil structure, holding moisture, and supporting the microbes that keep everything working. It’s a quieter part of the process, but it makes a big difference over time.
