September is quickly approaching, and with it comes the beginning of the final year of Spood Oddities. 🖤

I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately, and honestly… I feel incredibly proud, and incredibly grateful.

Spood Oddities may only have one more year left as a jumping spider breeder, but I truly believe that when we reach the end, I will have accomplished every dream I had when I started. Five years for us!

I worked incredibly hard to build relationships and trust with my overseas friends. Those relationships took time, and patience —and we’re seeing the fruits of that work.

Soroa’s are coming soon. A Cuban locale. Just one more molt until our un-related Soroa male matures. 🖤🌴

Pandora, a new and additional Bahamas line, already has a small clutch of Instar 1 beans. 🌱

I built three generations of our Banshee bloodline.

I created several other lines.

I built three generations of our Bahamas line.

And somehow, there is still more to come.

That means more to me than I can probably put into words. This wasn’t just about breeding spiders. It was about building something, preserving something, learning, creating, and sharing the things I love with people who became part of this journey along the way.

So, thank you.

Thank you to everyone who has adopted from us. Everyone who has supported us. Everyone who has cheered us on, shared our posts, asked questions, followed the babies, celebrated the wins, and stuck around through the hard parts.

We aren’t done yet. 🖤

We have one final year, and I intend to make it one hell of a final chapter.

I hope you’re as excited as I am. Because there is still so much to come. 🕷️🖤

Let’s talk about why some spiders are so much cheaper to ship and adopt than others.

A spider in a plain brown box is going to cost less to ship than a spider in an approved live-animal shipping box with six pieces of insulation and temperature control. That’s simply reality.

A plain shipping box may cost pennies. An approved live-animal box can cost nearly $6 before anything else goes into it.

Some sellers also charge a flat shipping rate. So while one customer’s shipment may cost less than that flat rate, another customer’s may cost more. The customers paying less aren’t necessarily getting the better deal—the difference is simply being absorbed across the customer base.

Then consider shipping methods. Some sellers continue to use 2-day shipping despite the warnings throughout the reptile and live-animal community about the risks of doing so.

And what about temperature control?

That’s another cost.

But here’s where I think the biggest difference is.

The cost of the spider isn’t just the spider.

If you don’t care about knowing your spider’s birthday/hatch date, if you aren’t concerned with knowing the exact instar or stage your spider is in, and you’re primarily looking for a viewing spider rather than one you’ve been raised with the expectation of interacting with, I completely understand choosing a seller who operates differently.

Especially with wild-caught spiders, many can naturally be very skittish. Some are beautiful animals that you’re simply going to enjoy observing rather than interacting with—and that’s perfectly okay.

Different keepers want different things.

But that’s also why I don’t think it’s fair to compare a lower-priced spider to a breeder-raised spider and assume you’re simply getting the exact same thing for less money.

I don’t raise spiders to quickly turn them over.

I track hatch dates. I track molts. I know my lines. I know their parents. I spend countless hours raising them, observing them, learning their individual personalities, and socializing the ones that allow it.

I spend time preparing their enclosures, gathering supplies, answering questions, and making sure their new keeper is prepared.

And I send an adoption card because I care about the spider I’m sending you and want you to have a piece of their history.

I care about these spiders long before someone ever sends me an adoption payment.

That’s why there is a difference between selling spiders and breeding spiders with intention and care.

You can absolutely find spiders for less money.

But before comparing prices, ask yourself what is actually included in that price.

Because sometimes the difference isn’t the spider.

It’s everything that happened months before the spider ever reached your hands. 🖤

I was SO expecting him to come out with carapace headbands, and now I’m sitting here staring at him like… sir?! 😂

I’m not 100% sure yet if he’s still subadult or if he’s officially mature, but one thing I do know…

HE. IS. A. BIG. BOY. 😭🖤

Which means this handsome dude is officially ready for his big boy enclosure! 🕷️✨

Ugh, though… I’m SO gonna miss his light coloring. 😭 He’s the first boy I’ve ever had who only got MORE white with every molt, starting all the way back when he was an early juvenile. 🥹🤍

Watching his color develop and document with every molt has been so dang cool. What a honor to have this EU bred boy!
