The Colonial Heights Animal Shelter is a city run shelter that takes in, houses, cares for, and adopts out dogs, cats, and other small companion animals. We are a small shelter that does our best to find loving homes for the animals in our care. The Colonial Heights Animal Control Office/Shelter is located at 301 Charles Dimmock Parkway. **We are currently operating by *APPOINTMENT ONLY* Please call to schedule an appointment: 804-520-9397. A stray kitten has been found in the Colonial Heights area, possibly near one of the local baseball fields. We are hoping to locate the kitten’s owner or anyone who may recognize this little one.

Pets can offer companionship, routine, laughter, and unconditional affection. For some veterans, the right animal can become a meaningful part of their support system.

Today is also a reminder that shelter pets come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and personalities—and there may be a wonderful companion waiting for the right person.

UPDATE BOTH DOG HAS BEEN CATCH!

🐾 STRAY DOG UPDATE – WHITE BANK AREA 🐾

One of the two stray dogs reported in the White Bank area has been safely picked up. ❤️ However, the second dog is still loose in the area, and we are working on a plan to safely trap him.

⚠️ PLEASE HELP US KEEP HIM SAFE!

Until we can safely secure the remaining dog, please:

* 🚫 DO NOT chase him.
* 🚫 DO NOT yell, call out to him, or attempt to catch him.
* 🚫 DO NOT approach him.
* 🐕 Please keep your dogs indoors or securely contained. Do not walk your dogs in the immediate area while we work on this.

Chasing, yelling, or approaching him may frighten him and cause him to run farther away, making it more difficult to safely capture him.

Please be patient with us. We are operating with limited staff and are carefully coordinating our efforts to trap and secure the remaining dog safely. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation while we work on a plan.

🐾 RABIES VACCINATION: REQUIRED BY VIRGINIA LAW

Protect your pets. Protect your family. Protect your community.

Did you know that rabies vaccinations are required by Virginia law for dogs and cats?

⚖️ What Does the Law Require?

Under Virginia Code § 3.2-6521, all dogs and cats four months of age and older must be currently vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian, subject to applicable legal exemptions.

Pet owners must also be able to provide proof of current vaccination when requested by an authorized official.

What happens if your pet is not vaccinated?

Failure to comply with applicable rabies vaccination requirements may result in legal consequences. Additional requirements or penalties may apply depending on the circumstances and applicable local ordinances. Contact Colonial Heights Animal Control for guidance on local requirements.

🦠 Why Is Rabies Vaccination So Important?

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that attacks the nervous system. Once clinical symptoms develop, it is almost always fatal in humans and other mammals.

Rabies can spread through the bite of an infected animal or when infected saliva enters an open wound or the eyes, nose, or mouth.

In Virginia, wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats can carry rabies. Even pets that stay indoors or spend little time outside may encounter an infected animal.

Keeping your pet vaccinated helps:

* 🐶 Protect your pet from a deadly disease if exposed to an infected animal.
* 👨‍👩‍👧 Protect your family by reducing the risk of rabies transmission through pets.
* 🦝 Protect the community by helping prevent the spread of rabies between wildlife, domestic animals, and people.
* 🏥 Reduce complications after exposure. Vaccination status affects the public health response and management required if an animal encounters a suspected rabid animal.

Please check your pet’s rabies certificate and vaccination expiration date. If your pet is due for a booster, schedule an appointment before the vaccination expires.

If your pet is bitten by a wild animal or may have been exposed to rabies, contact Animal Control and your veterinarian promptly. If a person may have been exposed, wash the affected area and seek immediate medical advice.

🐾 Sometimes, things really do happen for a reason! ❤️

A few weeks ago, we had a wonderful couple come in and meet Freddy. They fell in love with him, completed an application, and asked if we could hold him until they returned from a previously planned trip. We did our best to accommodate their request, hoping Freddy would soon be heading home with his new family.

Unfortunately, plans changed, and after their trip, we learned that they had adopted another animal while away and would no longer be adopting Freddy.

Of course, we were disappointed. We always want to give our dogs every opportunity to find their forever homes, and waiting for a potential adoption means putting other opportunities on hold.

But sometimes, a change in plans leads to exactly where a dog was meant to be! 🥰

While Freddy was listed as pending adoption, a wonderful woman reached out after seeing his post. When we explained that he had a potential home lined up, she kindly asked us to let her know if things didn't work out. Two weeks later, when we reached back out, she came to meet Freddy that very day — and adopted him that same day! ❤️

And let us tell you, this boy is LIVING HIS BEST LIFE! 😂🐶

Freddy has a big backyard, kids to play with, and a family who includes him in their adventures. His new mom jogs with him every day, and apparently, she is determined to keep this boy active! So much so that she recently told us he's actually starting to get tired of all their adventures and sometimes just wants to lay down, chew on his bone, and take a nap. 🤣🤣

WAIT… FREDDY GETS TIRED?! 😂 We love hearing that he's getting to enjoy life to the fullest, even if he's occasionally ready to clock out early!

This weekend, he's even off camping with his new mom! Rain or shine, they've got a canopy, his favorite people, and a whole new adventure ahead of them. ☔️🏕️

We try our best to work with people and give our animals the best possible chance at finding their forever homes. Sometimes things don't go according to plan, and we have to remind ourselves that there may be something even better waiting around the corner.

Freddy went from being a tree ornament to a solid member of the family, complete with a big backyard, playtime with the kids, daily exercise, camping trips, and family adventures. 🌳➡️🏡❤️

And honestly? We couldn't be happier with how his story turned out!

Congratulations, Freddy! You found your people, your adventures, and your forever home. We couldn't have written a better ending for you if we tried! 🐾❤️
Here's to happy endings, second chances, and families who make our shelter dogs part of EVERYTHING! 🥰

(And it's like he knew he was getting adopted that day because he came out, grabbed a toy and basically said "LET'S GO!" 🤣🤣)

🐱 HAPPY GLOBAL CAT DAY! 🐱

Today, we’re celebrating cats of every kind—from beloved indoor companions to community cats and the cats still waiting for their chance at the shelter.

Responsible cat care includes:
🏠 Providing safe shelter, food, and clean water.
💉 Keeping vaccinations current and discussing preventive care with your veterinarian.
✂️ Spaying and neutering to help prevent unwanted litters.
🩺 Seeking veterinary care when a cat is sick or injured.

Found a community cat? Avoid assuming every outdoor cat is abandoned. Some may have families, while others may benefit from humane community-cat programs such as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). TNR involves humanely trapping free-roaming cats, having them spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and returning them to their outdoor homes when appropriate. Ear-tipping helps identify cats who have already been sterilized.

Under Virginia law, free-roaming cats are generally not considered abandoned solely because they are outdoors. A cat may be owned, cared for by a community member, or part of a managed community-cat colony. Do not remove, relocate, or confine a free-roaming cat unless there is a lawful reason or the cat is sick, injured, in immediate danger, or otherwise requires intervention. Laws and local ordinances may address rabies vaccination, licensing, nuisance concerns, cruelty, abandonment, and the handling of injured or dangerous animals. When in doubt, contact Colonial Heights Animal Control or another appropriate animal-welfare agency for guidance.

Colonial Heights Animal Control strongly encourages residents to pursue TNR for community cats. While we are unable to provide TNR services, local organizations such as Operation Catnip and other community-cat and TNR groups may be able to provide information about available resources, participating veterinary providers, trapping assistance, and program requirements. Availability and eligibility may vary, so please contact an organization before trapping a cat to learn about current options.

Our shelter cats have plenty of personality, love, and charm to share. If you’re thinking about adopting, come meet the cats waiting for homes at Colonial Heights Animal Shelter!

It has been about one month since this dog went missing following a car accident, and the family has not given up hope. ❤️‍🩹 They are still searching and desperately hoping for any information that might help bring their beloved pet home safely.
