Central VA Friends of Petersburg Animal Care and Control is an all volunteer group of people that strive to better the lives of the animals being housed temporarily at the Petersburg Animal Care and Control (PACC) municipal, city run shelter. There are thousands of animals in the state of Virginia that are homeless for a multitude of reasons. We have simple goals.

1. Assisting the animals in the

care of PACC find their forever families by informing the public and rescue groups about the animals. We do this by publicizing the animals with photos and giving as much information as we can about each animal's temperament. Again, we are volunteers and not professionals. We can not guarantee any assessments made by our volunteers based on limited interactions in an environment that may be uncomfortable and unfamiliar to the animal. We will not be responsible for assessing the age, health or temperament of animals.
2. Enriching the lives of the animals through human contact. This may include walks, play time or simply sitting with each animal.
3. Educating the public about the needs of companion animals in order to live side by side with their owners in the community safely and happily

We are not employed by the city of Petersburg or by PACC. We can not make any decisions about the availability of any animals. We can not set up appointments nor can we decide the outcome of any application for adoption. We can not pick up stray animals and do not know if a lost pet is at the shelter. We can not enforce any laws set forth by the city of Petersburg or the state of Virginia regarding companion animals. We will do our best to keep this page updated with animals available for adoption but we are not at the shelter on a daily bases and may not know when new animals come into PACC or when animals have been adopted and have left the shelter. Thank you for visiting this page and considering adoption!

Those eyes. 🖤

Coal is a 6-month-old puppy with a story that is still being written. When he arrived, he was very underweight and a little unsure of the world around him. Since then, he has been gaining weight, building confidence, and showing us what a special little dog he truly is.

At around 20 pounds, Coal is a petite guy with a gentle soul. He can be a bit shy when meeting new people, but once you earn his trust, he becomes your biggest fan. The puppy who hangs back at first quickly transforms into a loyal best friend who wants nothing more than to be close to his favorite people.

Coal is looking for a patient adopter who understands that confidence takes time to build. The reward? Watching this sweet boy continue to blossom and knowing you helped him discover that the world is not such a scary place after all.

If you are looking for a loyal companion and have room in your heart for an underdog, Coal is ready to meet you. 🖤

Bellamy has come so far, and now all she needs is a family to call her own. ❤️

When Bellamy arrived as a stray, she was in rough shape and badly underweight. Despite everything she had been through, she never stopped being sweet, trusting, and eager for affection. Today, she is at a healthy weight, spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and ready to start the next chapter of her life.

Bellamy is the definition of a people dog. She loves being close to her humans, soaking up attention, and snuggling whenever she gets the chance. She will gently nudge your hand for pets and happily curl up beside you just to be near. She is also dog friendly and enjoys spending time with other dogs.

Because she bonds so deeply with her people, Bellamy would do best in a home where someone is around often. She is not a good fit for apartment living and is looking for a family that can give her the companionship and stability she craves.

After everything she has overcome, Bellamy deserves a home where she never has to wonder if she is safe, loved, or wanted again. If you are looking for a loyal companion who will adore you with her whole heart, Bellamy is waiting to meet you.

Snow is ready to find her person. ❄️

This petite 10-month-old Husky is full of personality, energy, and potential. She is playful, social, and loves spending time with other dogs. Whether she is romping around with canine friends or exploring the world around her, Snow approaches life with enthusiasm and curiosity.

Like many young Huskies, Snow is still learning the ropes. She can be very mouthy and will need an adopter who is committed to training, consistency, and helping her mature into the amazing dog we know she can be. The effort you put into Snow now will be rewarded with a loyal companion for years to come.

Snow is looking for a home without children or cats. She would thrive with an active adopter who understands that Huskies are intelligent, energetic dogs that need both physical exercise and mental enrichment.

This sweet girl has her whole future ahead of her. All she needs is someone willing to give her the guidance, patience, and love she deserves. Could that be you?

Looking for a young dog who’s already ahead of the curve?

Meet Wally.

At only 7 months old, Wally is everything people dream about finding in a young dog. He’s already house trained, crate trained, knows sit and stay, and has the kind of happy, eager-to-please personality that makes training a joy.

Wally is dog friendly, loves being around people, and is at that perfect age where he’s still playful and goofy but has already started learning how to be a great companion. He would benefit from continued socialization and training, but this handsome boy already has an incredible foundation.

Whether you’re looking for a hiking buddy, running partner, adventure companion, or just a best friend to share your couch with at the end of the day, Wally is ready.

And can we talk about that face? Those giant ears? That smile? 🥹

Wally is ready to leave shelter life behind and start the next chapter of his story with a family of his own.

Have you ever wanted a dog that thinks you’re the most important person in the world?

Meet Knix.

This handsome guy is estimated to be 5-7 years old and is the definition of a loyal companion. Knix is a total velcro dog who wants nothing more than to be by your side, whether you’re heading out for a walk, relaxing on the couch, or just moving from one room to another.

He’s dog friendly, walks beautifully on a leash, and already knows commands like sit and stay. Most of all, he’s incredibly sweet and devoted to his people.

Knix isn’t looking for excitement. He’s looking for connection. The kind that comes from sharing everyday life with someone who loves him as much as he’ll love them.

While other dogs may catch your eye with puppy antics, Knix wins hearts the old-fashioned way: with loyalty, companionship, and a gentle soul that just wants a family of his own.

If you’re looking for a best friend, Knix is waiting.

Charlie ❤️

Two months ago, Charlie arrived at our shelter underweight, neglected, and clearly down on his luck.

Today?

You’d never know it.

Somehow, despite everything he’s been through, Charlie has remained one of the happiest dogs you’ll ever meet.

This one-year-old, 61-pound sweetheart greets every friend with the same enthusiasm. His tail wags so hard that he occasionally smacks himself with it when he’s excited to see someone he loves. And trust us, Charlie loves everyone.

He’s the kind of dog who leans in for affection. The kind who looks at you with soft eyes and a hopeful smile. The kind who makes you wonder how such a good dog ended up waiting so long for a family.

Charlie is dog-friendly, incredibly affectionate, and always ready to make a new friend. He has recovered beautifully and is more than ready to leave shelter life behind.

What Charlie wants isn’t complicated.

A couch.

A family.

A person to greet every day with that famous helicopter tail.

After two months of waiting, we think it’s finally Charlie’s turn.

Neutered, vaccinated, and ready to go home.

Baloo 💙

Some dogs are easy to like.

Baloo is impossible not to love.

At just one year old and 75 pounds, this handsome blue pit bull has already mastered something many dogs spend a lifetime learning: how to be a best friend.

Baloo is the dog who greets you with a wagging tail and soft eyes. The dog who wants to be wherever you are. The dog who makes ordinary moments better just by being part of them.

Want to go for a walk? He’s in.

Want to toss a toy around the yard? Absolutely.

Want to spend time together? That’s all he really wants.

Like many young dogs, Baloo has energy to burn. Shelter life can be frustrating for an active, people-oriented dog, and he’s ready for a home where he can get the exercise, enrichment, and companionship he craves. Once he’s out with his people, his happy, affectionate personality shines through.

He’s incredibly people-focused, eager to learn, and motivated by treats, making him a joy to work with. Whether you’re teaching him something new or simply spending time together, Baloo is happiest when he’s with his person.

Neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative, and ready for his next chapter, Baloo is searching for the family who will never have to wonder where their best friend is, because he’ll be right beside them.

Sky ☁️

For over a month, Sky survived on her own.

She wandered through neighborhoods, slept outside in the elements, and somehow managed to keep going despite having no place to call home. By the time she made it to safety, her body showed the wear of life on the streets.

But Sky? She left all of that behind the moment she walked through our doors.

This girl doesn’t want adventure. She doesn’t want to roam. She doesn’t want to spend another day surviving.

Sky wants a couch.

She wants blankets. She wants to curl up beside her person and sigh the deep sigh of a dog who finally feels safe. She wants belly rubs, quiet evenings, and someone to love.

Now, we do want to be honest about one thing. Shelter life is stressful for Sky. When you first meet her in her kennel, she can seem a little over-the-top and energetic. The shelter is loud, busy, and overwhelming. But once she gets out for a walk and has a chance to decompress, she settles down beautifully and shows her true personality: affectionate, calm, and incredibly people-oriented.

She’s the kind of dog who leans into your legs for comfort. The kind who looks at you with soft eyes that seem to say, “Can I stay here?” The kind who appreciates every act of kindness because she knows what life is like without it.

Sky already knows how to sit and appears to be both house and crate trained. She settles beautifully indoors and seems far more interested in affection than anything else. She’s also shown positive interest in other dogs and may enjoy having a canine companion.

After spending so long without a home, Sky deserves more than a place to live.

She deserves a place to belong.

Loyal has been waiting since October 20, 2025 for someone to finally choose him.

And honestly, we cannot understand how this boy is still here.

This stunning 2-year-old, 68 lb merle Catahoula is everything people say they want in a dog. Affectionate, loyal, friendly, adventurous, and deeply connected to his people. Loyal is happiest simply being near you, whether that means going for a car ride, walking by your side, or curling up nearby at the end of the day.

He rides beautifully in the car, greets new people warmly, and has done well with other dogs too. Everywhere he goes, he just wants to be included and loved.

There’s such a softness to Loyal despite everything he’s been through. He was originally found abandoned beside his belongings at the future site of the new animal shelter, yet somehow he still trusts people completely and loves with his whole heart.

He is neutered, heartworm negative, fully vaccinated, and more than ready to finally leave shelter life behind.

At this point, Loyal doesn’t need more time. He needs someone to finally see him and realize he should have been home a long time ago.

Please share Loyal and help us find his family. 🤍

Email [email protected] to meet him.
