Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke can set in quickly for our pets and become fatal if not addressed in time. Please make sure your animals have shady places, plenty of cool water, try to take them out in the cooler parts of the day (early morning, late evening), and avoid the middle of the day as those will be the hottest hours.
🔅🚗Please do NOT leave your animals in a vehicle at any time without the AC on, as they can still overheat with the windows cracked, even if you think, "Oh it won't be that long, I'll be back in 5 minutes!!" There is an Ordinance to protect animals against this here in Casper, you can find it under the following: Animal Care and Control Ordinance, Casper Municipal Code, Ch. 6.04.210 B and C.
🔅🐾If it's too hot for you to walk outside barefoot, it's too hot for your pets to walk outside barefoot. Try to walk animals on grass or soil to avoid paw pad burns. If that isn't an option, there are booties for dogs' paws that can protect them against the heat of pavement, or if they're a small enough breed you can carry them to grassy/soil patches.
🔅🌳If you have cats and dogs that roam the neighborhood (whether they have a home or are strays) and help care for them, please check water left out frequently to ensure it is cool and provide a shaded area (and/or please don't shoo animals away from your shady areas) if you are so inclined. If your pet roams, please try to keep them inside or let them back inside during the day when the temperature is climbing.
🔅💦If you see an animal experiencing heat exhaustion or having a heat stroke, try to immediately get them in a cool area indoors and apply cool, damp cloths to the head, paws, and back. NEVER use or douse/spray down an animal with cold water as the sudden and severe temperature change can cause shock and add complications to the emergency. Call your vet (or a local veterinary office if you're travelling) for additional instructions and aid!
