What an eventful day, to say the least!!
This morning, when I let Elsa out for her morning potty break, she gave me that look. You know the one… the look I’ve come to recognize all too well from mama dogs when they know something big is about to happen!
I kept a close eye on her throughout the day using our cameras while I was at work, and my husband, Scott, was checking on her frequently, too. I even talked to my boss about possibly leaving early because I just had a feeling Elsa wasn’t going to hold out until I got home.
While waiting for our last patient to arrive at the clinic, I checked the camera one more time… and there was a BABY! From what I could see, everything looked good. Thankfully, I was able to arrange coverage for our last patient, packed up my things, and headed out the door.
And then, literally the moment I got into my car, my phone rang.
It was my son Jonah’s teacher. His feeding tube button had accidentally been pulled out, and the school nurse and teacher were applying pressure to the stoma site. So, off to the school I went! Thankfully, within seconds of arriving, I had everything replaced and back in working order.
Once we got that situation taken care of, we finally headed home. Of course, I still had Elsa and her new baby pulled up on the camera the entire time, making sure everything continued to look okay.
As soon as we got home, I went straight to check on Elsa. I picked up her tiny bluie sable baby and discovered we had a GIRL! And let me tell you, she is absolutely gorgeous!
Unfortunately, I quickly noticed a cut on her back leg. Sometimes, when mama dogs are removing the birth sacs, they can get a little overzealous. I believe it was an honest accident, and Elsa unfortunately caught her little girl’s leg in the process.
I immediately called our vet for guidance, and they recommended bringing her in for an evaluation.
Seven stitches later, our beautiful girl is expected to make a perfect recovery! By an absolute miracle, no tendons or blood vessels were damaged. We’ll be cleaning the wound and applying ointment twice daily while she heals.
Once we got home, I carefully reintroduced the baby to Elsa. While checking her tummy, I realized I really wasn’t feeling much in there. Could we possibly have a singleton litter? I knew this was going to be a small litter from the beginning. Even on ultrasound, I could only confidently confirm one puppy, with two being my best guess.
I let Elsa rest while keeping a close eye on her. However, she continued having contractions, and no puppy was arriving. At this point, I was becoming concerned, so I called our vet again. She suggested I perform another ultrasound to see if I could identify anything.
I got the ultrasound out, and within moments, I could see it… a spine and a heartbeat! I was SO relieved to know that little one was still alive! I called the vet back, and they recommended bringing Elsa in for another evaluation.
So, here we go again! Elsa, her new baby, and I were headed back into town.
About halfway there, Elsa’s contractions really started picking up. And then, all of a sudden, I found myself pulling over to help deliver a puppy in the FRONT SEAT of my car… in the DARK… while it was RAINING!
Because apparently, this day wasn’t eventful enough already!
Our second arrival was a beautiful mismark sable bluie BOY!
I called the vet’s office yet again, and they still wanted us to come in to make sure Elsa didn’t have any other puppies remaining.
And finally… back home we went!
Elsa and her two beautiful bluie babies are now resting comfortably for the night. We have a little girl sporting seven stitches and a handsome little boy who decided to make his grand entrance in the front seat of my car.
If today isn’t a full moon, then HOLY MOLY, it certainly should be!
All joking aside, I am incredibly thankful that both babies are here, that our little girl’s injury wasn’t more serious, and that Elsa is resting comfortably with her two precious babies.
And I cannot say THANK YOU enough to our amazing veterinary team at Rocky Mountain Animal Hospital. They saw us for two separate emergency visits in the same day and were absolutely wonderful to work with, as always. We are so fortunate to have a team that is there for us when we need them most!
Now, if everyone could just have a quiet, uneventful night, that would be absolutely fantastic!
