It’s the point in the summer when we fill up with young Swainson’s Hawks. This species matures incredibly fast and the young migrate to Argentina in September or October, separately from the adults of the same species. We are doing our best to help them heal and get into good body condition for migration.

Celebrating International Owl Awareness Day! The young Barn Owls in our care are mostly grown up. We will miss their cute faces and otherworldly noises when they are cleared for release back into the wild, where they belong!

Update: Thank you for participating in yesterday’s fundraiser!

Please help us care for injured and orphaned birds by participating in our fundraiser Wednesday, July 15 from 4 to 8 PM at Chipotle in Lafayette. Show the flier below at checkout for us to get credit. This year we have a bumper crop of baby Barn Owls, and are starting to welcome lots of young Cooper’s and Swainson’s Hawks. Thank you so much for your support! We could not return these guys to the wild without you!

Help us feed these babies! Last year, we admitted 179 birds in the month of July, so we are girding our collective loins and doing our best to prepare! We will feature a fundraiser at a local restaurant each month through the summer, starting Tuesday, 6/30 at Panda Express on Church Ranch Blvd in Westminster. Grab lunch or dinner and show them a copy of this flier so we get a portion of the sale. Thank you, and thank Panda Express!

One of the hardest parts of a rehabber’s job is knowing when to leave an animal in the wild (and convincing concerned people that it is the right decision). This is a wonderful and educational story about one such case.

A young hawk nicknamed Tony has become an unlikely celebrity in an Aurora neighborhood after falling from a nest and spending several days learning to fly in front yards, trees and on top of backyard grills.

What a difference 10 days make! Two nestling barn owls must have fallen from their nest, but the property owner was not able to find the nest, so they were brought into our care. They are both eating well and growing fast!

Here are five of the 13 young American Kestrels in our care. Most have moved out to our flight cages to work on their aerial skills. All birds grow up fast, but these little falcons seem especially fast learners.

Babies everywhere!!! We have had to dedicate two of our outdoor flight enclosures to the 25 young Great Horned Owls in our care. They are progressing nicely, but will stay with us a few more months, until they are the age that they would normally leave their parents in the wild.

We got our first baby kestrels of the year last night! Their nest was destroyed and some of their siblings were lost. They require frequent feedings as their crops are so small and their metabolism is so high. Luckily they are very enthusiastic eaters!
Thank you for supporting our work as we speed towards busy season! We already have more than 20 young great horned owls in our care! https://www.birds-of-prey.org/donate
