On August 14th, I had the honor of meeting Hedwig โ a barred owl who was hurt, grounded, and having a very bad day.
I scooped him up and took him to the wildlife hospital where he had surgery and has been recovering like the absolute champion he is ever since.
Today I got to do the best part โ I released him! And he brought a plus-one: another fledgling I named Pigwidgeon.
Yes, I know someone on this page is cringing at me naming them. I was raised to believe every rescue deserves a name โ so if the worst happens, they are remembered and they mattered.
So here we are, naming owls.
No regrets.
Against all odds, both of these goofy, magnificent, wide-eyed miracles survived. And today they went home, right back to where they belong.
Fly free, Hedwig and Pigwidgeon. Thanks for letting me be a small part of your story.
