Knuckling - That is whats going on here. Why is it happening? Glad you asked!
Dobermans are a fast growing breed, and between the ages of 8 weeks and 16 weeks they are doubling in size. This rapid growth can lead to the bones of your puppy outgrowing the ligaments that hold all those crucial joints together. This is often diet related, typically due to too much protein in the diet but I have PERSONALLY found the culprit has alot more to do with happy puppy owners overfeeding their puppies. Following the guidelines on the bag is exceptionally important no matter what brand you are feeding. Even if it does not look like enough to the eye or your puppy still seems hungry after dinner it is still important you stick to the recommended feeding amounts so you can avoid having to deal with this issue.
Now, that said, knuckling is NOT the end of the world. It is extremely common in the breed at this age range, and if you correct the diet issue that caused it will resolve on its own within a few days. If your puppy is knuckling do not panic. Your puppy is not defective. But DO restrict their activity because too much stress on a hyperflexed joint CAN cause long term issues.
You will get a lot of advice from people that will say "change to large puppy" or "change to adult food" but for the most part it has been my experience that neither of those food types are a factor it is ALMOST ALWAYS an OVER feeding issue then it is related to the protein levels in the type of food you are feeding.
