She does not release her young into the world. She becomes the place they grow.

But the detail that changes everything is how intentional each step is.

After mating, the male carefully places fertilized eggs across her back, pressing them into position one at a time. Her skin responds almost immediately, swelling and folding around each egg until they are sealed beneath the surface.

What follows is less like incubation and more like integration.

The skin thickens, forms pockets, and builds a living structure around each developing body. Blood flow increases, turning her back into a network that delivers oxygen and nutrients directly where they are needed. From the outside, it looks like a pattern. From the inside, it functions like a system.

Weeks later, the surface shifts again.

Small, fully formed toads begin to push outward, emerging from those openings and slipping into the water without assistance. There is no exposed larval stage, no waiting, no transition left unfinished.

Every vulnerable moment is handled before the world ever gets involved.

It feels unnatural only because it leaves nothing to chance.
