Radiant Heart has proudly partnered with the Orcas Animal Protection Society for most of our 13 years in business.

In the early years of our partnership, Bob and Marsha Waunch personally transported beloved pets between Orcas Island and Radiant Heart in their small plane—an extraordinary act of service that reflected their deep commitment to the animals and families of their island community.

After Bob and Marsha retired from their many years of work founding and building what became such an important and exemplary animal shelter on Orcas Island, Radiant Heart found a new way to continue that connection.

Today, every two weeks, our van makes the journey to both Orcas and San Juan Islands, allowing us to continue providing compassionate after-care to pets and the families who love them throughout the island communities.

One of the things we love about our work is getting to know the veterinary professionals who serve communities throughout Northwest Washington—and Guardian Veterinary Hospital in the San Juan Islands is a truly special veterinary practice.

Locally owned by Drs. Mel and Blake Guard, Guardian provides veterinary care for an impressive range of animals—from dogs and cats to horses, sheep, goats, cattle and pigs. They have offices in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island and Lopez Village, and their practice reaches across the islands, including mobile services on Orcas.

But Guardian’s connection to the San Juans goes much deeper than simply practicing veterinary medicine there.

Dr. Blake Guard is a sixth-generation San Juan Islander who grew up on his family’s ranch. Today, he and Dr. Mel help manage the family’s sheep and cattle herd while raising their three children on the island. Their veterinary practice is very much a reflection of the community they are part of.

And then there is the transportation!

Providing veterinary care across an archipelago sometimes requires more than a car. Dr. Blake is also a pilot, and the Guardian website includes a wonderful video featuring the Drs. Guard traveling by plane. It is well worth watching.

Every two weeks, Bobbie Ruth and Ann from Radiant Heart make their own journey to the San Juans, returning completed after-care packages and bringing pets entrusted to us by referring veterinary practices like Guardian back to Bellingham.

Over time, we have come to appreciate not only how good the Guards are at what they do, but how they do it.

There is an intelligent openness, frankness, practicality and kindness about them that feels wonderfully characteristic of island life. They know their community. They know animals. And they clearly understand that in the San Juans, dogs and cats, horses and livestock are all important parts of the families, farms and livelihoods of the people they serve.

We are proud that Guardian Veterinary Hospital trusts Radiant Heart to provide after-care for the animals and families they serve.

This past Sunday, Ann, Spike, and I had the privilege of representing Radiant Heart Pet Cremation & Memorials in the Bellingham Pride Parade as an LGBTQ+ owned company.

Our decorated vehicle brought smiles and positive energy throughout the well-attended parade (Kudos to Maxine and the volunteers at Pride In Bellingham!), but the most meaningful moments happened before the parade even began.

While we were in the staging area, several people recognized the website address on the banners we hung on the side of our vehicle, and came over to introduce themselves. They shared that Radiant Heart had cared for their beloved pets and told us how much our service had meant to them. They didn't simply say they were satisfied—they said they appreciated us. More than one person even described the care we provide as "special."

Those kind words belong to our entire team.

Mary Jo, Nicole, Vale, Amy, Gillian, Rowan, Karen, Kathy, and Anneliese are the people who answer phones, meet with grieving families, transport beloved pets, create beautiful memorials, prepare after-care packages, and take care of the countless details that happen behind the scenes every single day.

Their compassion, skill, and dedication are what make Radiant Heart what it is. I am incredibly grateful for each of them and proud to work alongside such an exceptional group of people.

Sunday was a wonderful reminder that the work we do truly matters. Thank you to everyone who stopped to share your stories with us. Your kind words touched our hearts and reminded us why we are so honored to do this work.

At Radiant Heart Pet Cremation & Memorials, we know there is something special about a great shop dog—the kind who greets everyone with a wagging tail and a joyful heart.

We are incredibly grateful to our co-workers, Amy West and Kathy Smith, for sharing the newest member of their family with us: **Milo!**

Most days, Milo comes to work with Amy, bringing smiles to our team and the families who visit us. His presence is a reminder that even during difficult moments, a little kindness and unconditional love can make all the difference.

And if we're being honest, there's nothing quite like starting the work day with an enthusiastic greeting from a sweet little dog.

This Monday, we're simply feeling thankful for Milo and the happiness he brings to all of us. ❤️🐾

At Radiant Heart, we hear nothing but wonderful things about Dr. Searle, Dr. Calvin, Office Manager Christy, and the entire team at Meridian Street Veterinary.

One of the newer veterinary practices in our community, Meridian Street Veterinary quickly filled an important need for families in the Cornwall Park neighborhood and beyond, earning a reputation for both compassion and great care.

Nestled in the heart of Bellingham’s Birchwood neighborhood, Maplewood Animal Hospital is a true community veterinary practice. In addition to caring for dogs and cats, their experienced team also provides medical care for a wide variety of small and exotic pets, including ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, rats, hamsters, and gerbils.
