Please understand- Our drop off times are between 7:30 am and 8:30 am and pick up times are between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm. IF (ONLY IF) we get done SOONER will we call! If you don't hear from us the pick up time is between 2:30 and 3:30 pm!

There is a late fee if you show up after 3:30 pm. Please be mindful we are an urgent care clinic who tries to help the community with a spay and neuter program and we have to have every patient out, areas cleaned, and instruments repacked for the weekend.

🚨🎣 FISHING HOOKS + PETS = A PAINFUL PROBLEM! 🐾😿

Please, PLEASE don’t try to “just pull it out.” 🚫

This X-ray shows a fishing hook embedded in a cat’s paw. And yes… even a tiny hook can cause BIG problems when that barb gets caught underneath the skin.

Curious cats and dogs can get into fishing gear in so many ways — stepping on a hook, getting tangled in fishing line, chewing on bait, or even swallowing a hook. 🎣🐶🐱

🚨 IF YOUR PET GETS HOOKED:

🛑 Keep your pet calm and as still as possible.

👅 Prevent licking, chewing, or pawing at the area. Use an e-collar if you have one.

⚠️ Keep children and other pets away. Even the sweetest pet may bite or scratch when they are scared or in pain.

🎣 If there is a lure, fishing line, or other equipment attached, carefully support it so it doesn't swing or pull on the hook.

🏥 Bring your pet in for veterinary care as soon as possible.

❌ PLEASE DO NOT:

🚫 Do NOT pull the hook straight back out.

🚫 Do NOT push the hook farther through the skin.

🚫 Do NOT cut the hook or fishing line unless specifically instructed by a veterinarian.

🚫 Do NOT attempt to remove a hook from the mouth, throat, eye, face, chest, abdomen, or paw at home.

🚫 Do NOT give human pain medications. Many common human medications can be toxic to pets. ☠️🐾

Sedation or anesthesia may be necessary to prevent additional injury and allow the area to be properly cleaned and treated.

🎣🐾 PREVENTION MATTERS!

Keep tackle boxes closed, pick up discarded fishing line and hooks, and NEVER leave baited hooks unattended around pets.

One curious sniff, one paw, or one bite can turn into a painful emergency. 😿

Not every lump or bump is an abscess, cyst, or tumor... sometimes it's something much creepier—a bot fly larva! 😳

A patient recently visited us with a strange swelling that turned out to be a bot fly. Fortunately, this little hitchhiker was close to the surface, making it easy for our team to remove. Once the larva was removed, we clipped and cleaned the area thoroughly and administered an antibiotic injection to help prevent infection.

🧐 What is a bot fly?

A bot fly is a type of fly whose larvae develop underneath an animal's skin. The adult fly doesn't actually burrow into your pet. Instead, it lays eggs near areas where pets may roam, and the tiny larva finds its way into the skin through a small wound or natural opening.

⚠️ Signs your pet may have a bot fly:

🐾 A raised lump with a small hole in the center

🐾 Drainage or discharge from the hole

🐾 Frequent licking or scratching at one spot

🐾 Swelling that doesn't seem to heal

🐾 Occasionally, you may even see the larva moving or sticking part of its body out of the opening.

🚫 Please don't squeeze it!

Trying to pop or squeeze a bot fly can rupture the larva under the skin, increasing the risk of inflammation and infection. It's safest to have it removed by a veterinarian.

❤️ The good news!

Most bot flies are relatively easy to treat when caught early. Once removed, the wound is cleaned, and your veterinarian will determine if antibiotics or other medications are needed.

If you ever notice a strange lump with a tiny hole in the center or something just doesn't look right, don't wait—have your pet examined. Sometimes the creepiest problems have the simplest solutions!

🐾 Double Trouble, Happy Ending! 🐾

Meet these adorable siblings who recently paid us a visit at Veterinary Urgent Care of Beaumont after a scary accident at home.

Their owners returned home to find a chewed-up bottle of Carprofen (a commonly prescribed veterinary pain medication) with most of the tablets missing. Since they weren't sure which pup—or if both pups—had gotten into the medication, they did exactly what we hope every pet owner would do:

👏 They sought veterinary care immediately!

When it comes to potential medication ingestion, time is critical. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of preventing serious complications.

After obtaining a history and discussing treatment options with the owners, we immediately began decontamination:

✔️ Induced vomiting with an emetic injection
✔️ Large amount of stomach contents recovered
✔️ Anti-nausea injection administered
✔️ Activated charcoal given to help reduce absorption of any remaining medication
✔️ Subcutaneous fluids administered
✔️ Additional activated charcoal sent home for a repeat dose

Now, if you've ever worked with activated charcoal, you know exactly what's coming next... 😅

Before we even opened the ToxiBan, our team was getting everyone prepared. The technicians had their PPE on, and apparently these two decided they needed PPE too! 🐶🐶

The photo was taken before treatment, while they were suited up and ready for what was about to become a very messy evening. Let's just say... anyone familiar with activated charcoal knows that nobody escapes completely clean—not the staff, not the patients, and definitely not the treatment area! 😂

💡 Pet Safety Reminder: Never assume your pet won't get into medications. Even bottles with childproof caps can be chewed open by determined dogs! Keep all medications stored securely and out of reach.

Most importantly, we want to give a huge shoutout to these owners for acting quickly and bringing both pets in right away. Their fast response allowed us to start treatment before signs of toxicity developed.
